3 Soldiers Kidnapped Briefly In Ship Takeover
A short time later, dozens of their fellow soldiers began searching the ship. When the attacking passengers saw that soldiers had successfully seized control of the Marmara, they released the three captives, the report stated.
The captive soldiers had recovered from their initial disorientation during their time below deck, and once released hurried to join their unit.
IDF commanders reacted to the report with concern. As similar ships continue to make their way to Gaza, there could be a situation in which a soldier is held captive in order to give passengers a bargaining chip, they said, and that must be prevented.
Reuters has published an eyewitness account that backs the IDF report. Andre Abu Khalil, a Lebanese cameraman for the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera network, was aboard the Mavi Marmara as IDF soldiers boarded. He told Reuters that four soldiers who were among the first aboard were injured and were taken below deck.
A second wave of troops then attempted to board, he said. “Twenty Turkish men formed a human shield to prevent the Israeli soldiers from scaling the ship. They had slingshots, water pipes and sticks,” he recalled. After a brief standoff, after the first wave had been attacked violently, the Israelis opened fire, he claimed.

‘Flame Of Hope’ Arrives In Salisbury/Wicomico County
Wicomico County Law Enforcement Officers Participate in Statewide Torch Run Relay as Show of Support for the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games Maryland Torch Run Celebrates 25 Years of Success
Salisbury -- Law Enforcement officers representing Wicomico County Law Enforcement will be on the run on Monday June 7th at 1PM taking part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Relay for Special Olympics Maryland. Their mission: to escort and protect the Special Olympics ‘Flame of Hope’ as it makes its way toward the opening of the 40th Anniversary Summer Games at Towson University, June 11-13.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Maryland Torch Run, a movement that began in 1986 with a handful of officers raising $5,000, and has grown into a true year-round effort that involves thousands of officers and raised $3.7 million in 2009. Since its inception, the Torch Run has taken very seriously its role as “Guardians of the Flame”, and the Relay is an important and celebrated part of every Special Olympics competition.
The schedule for Wicomico County’s portion of the Torch Run is as follows (all times are approximate and subject to change):
Begin 1PM at Salisbury University Student Center Parking lot and immediately run to Pinehurst Elementary School where the staff/students line the streets and special education students run with law enforcement. The run will continue down Riverside Dr to downtown Salisbury where it will eventually end at the Salisbury Police Department.
This local portion of the Torch Run Relay is part of a much larger effort. Statewide, the Maryland Torch Run Relay consists of four different legs – Eastern, Western, Central and Southern – and throughout the entire week, thousands of Torch Run volunteers will cover hundreds of miles, eventually converging on Towson where the individual flames will be united in the Final Leg Ceremony and then officers from around the state will travel the final 2.5 miles to the Opening Ceremony at Towson University. It is there that the Flame is handed off to the Special Olympics athletes who have the honor of taking the final lap with the torch and then lighting the cauldron and officially declaring the 2010 SOMD Summer Games open.
“This Torch Run Relay is really just a small piece of what the dedicated officers from around the state do for the athletes of Special Olympics Maryland on a year-round basis,” said Lt. John Newnan, Torch Run Director for Maryland. “But it is perhaps the most visible, and as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this movement, it is a phenomenal opportunity for us to bring our message of hope, acceptance and tolerance to the community at large. If we can change even one person’s attitude or educate someone about the abilities of Special Olympics athletes then every step of this week-long journey is worth it.”
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Maryland is a year-round movement whose goal is to raise both funds and awareness for the athletes who train and compete in Special Olympics Maryland. The Maryland Torch Run began in 1986 with a handful of officers raising $50,000. Since that time, the Maryland Torch Run has grown tremendously, including volunteer officers from nearly every law enforcement agency and correctional facility in Maryland, and through special events such as the MSP Polar Bear Plunge, the annual Torch Run T-shirt sales and other efforts, raising $3.7 million for SOMD in 2009, and once again earning “Top Fundraising Program” honors at the annual International Torch Run Conference.
The 40th Anniversary SOMD Summer Games are set for June 11-13 at Towson University. During this celebrated weekend, 1,200 athletes from around the state will go for gold in aquatics, athletics, bocce, equestrian, cheerleading and softball.

Congress Hard At Work: Bill to Remedy ‘Gender Discrimination’ In Public Restrooms
The Restroom Gender Parity in Federal Buildings Act received a full committee hearing on May 12, complete with introductory remarks by lawmakers and testimony from witnesses.
Rep. Darryl Issa of California, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, noted the importance of the hearing process – not to mention the potty parity bill itself:
“As people seldom realize, in Congress, in order to move a piece of legislation, we hold hearings. In order to understand the final and best form of that legislation, we hold hearings. I think this is no exception,” said Issa, who described the bill as laudable and essential.
Institutional discrimination in restrooms
The bill’s sponsor, Committee Chairman Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), outlined both the problem and his proposed solution:
“This is not a minor issue,” Towns said. “Women are often forced to wait in long lines to use public restrooms or walk further to find a restroom while men rarely have the same problem.”

Bob Ehrlich Welcomes President Obama To Maryland
ANNAPOLIS – Bob Ehrlich today issued the following statement welcoming President Barack Obama to Maryland and offering suggestions for small business owners with whom the president and Governor Martin O’Malley could meet to learn about Maryland’s economic hardships.
“I’d like to welcome President Obama to Maryland. It is always productive to have the president hear firsthand how the doubling of our unemployment rate and the closing of 3,000 small businesses last year is impacting Maryland. Having met with more than 100 small business owners in the past two months, these hardships are foremost on my mind.
“I respectfully encourage President Obama and Governor O’Malley to visit a few of the entrepreneurs I have met with to hear firsthand their sobering stories of the obstacles to job creation that currently exist in government. I have included a list of small business owners with whom I believe a conversation would be valuable.”
· Lynn Eash of Columbia-based E & G Classics, whose company has been forced to lay off more than 160 employees since 2006;
· Whitney Whiteman, the owner of ice cream franchises in Baltimore County, whose customers complained about having to pay a 20% sales tax increase beginning in 2007;
· Amy Brown, owner of Blue Heron Bags, who was forced to pay unemployment insurance taxes for a part-time employee on payroll for less than one month;
· Louann Livingood, owner of an embroidery shop in Mount Airy, who dealt with incompetent management of the state’s unemployment insurance program;
· Jeannie Cousineaux-Stone, owner of Stoney’s Seafood Restaurant in Broom’s Island, whose dreams of expanding her business were derailed by the state’s overzealous regulatory environment.

Dave Trembley Fired as Orioles Manager
The Orioles are currently riding a wave of ineptitude that features no clutch hitting, fielding mistakes, base running errors, a horrid bullpen and a palpable malaise that is as undeniable as it is embarrassing.
These are not your father's Orioles.
It seems like a lifetime ago that "The Oriole Way" was a phrase that meant hard work, determination and success. Now it could very well mean a dysfunctional organization that rivals the Oakland Raiders for its ability to find new lows to sink to.
This year the Orioles have the worst record in baseball at 15-39, which is good for a .278 winning percentage- losing 72.2% of the time. Maybe the safest bet in sports to is pick against the Orioles. The team is 15.5 games behind 4th place.
For his tenure Dave Trembley was just 187-283. His achilles heel was the way he shuffled relief pitchers to and fro, often with disastrous results. But the O's decline is not his fault alone. The team isn't hitting and some of that blame should fall to GM Andy MacPhail as well as hitting coach Terry Crowley. Baltimore ranks near the bottom in virtually every AL offensive category. Juan Samuel, who was a good player, but terrible third base coach, will take over the reigns with the "interim" tag.
In my opinion Dave Trembley was set up to fail or at the very least was not put in the best position to succeed. After last season the Orioles knew they needed a closer, after dealing their closer, George Sherrill, to the Dodger. This offseason they signed Mike Gonzalez. He promptly blew two saves to begin the season and went on the DL- where he still resides. MacPhail added no one else with any creditability to pick up the slack. Also lacking in the Orioles' game was a true home run hitter. For this MacPhail did nothing. We have no can't-miss power hitters in AAA and none on the team. He didn't sign one, trade for one or in any way address the need. Given this, it shouldn't be a surprise that the Orioles are having trouble generating runs.
While I agree with the decision to fire Trembley, I am 99.9% positive that Juan Samuel is not the answer. He has only managed one year and that was in AA. Short of Peter Angelos selling the team (probably the best thing that could happen) the Orioles need to bring in a fiery competitor that will not stand for the mediocrity that has become the team's standard for the last 12 years of losing. We need a younger version of Earl Weaver or Mike Ditka. While that will not guarantee instant success, a passionate manager would at least send a signal to Oriole fans that someone actually cares and is trying.
I, for one, am tired as hell of making the 100+ mile drive up to Baltimore to see the O's not run out ground balls, not catch fly balls that were clearly catchable, not hold leads in late innings, etc... It's a lot to ask of a fan to put forth that kind of effort when the millionaires playing the game seem to be mailing it in every game. This is why I have not attended one game this year. It's not about the wins and losses for me, it's about how the game is played. These Orioles, under Trembley, were not playing the game "The Orioles Way" or "The Ripken Way". I highly doubt Juan Samuel will be the manager after September, but I do wish him success. Perhaps he'll get them playing with effort and I can return to my beloved Camden Yards.
When it comes to Dave Trembley I'll also wish him success in the future. I've heard from everyone that he is a nice guy and as such, I feel for him that he is now jobless. Below is my favorite picture of Dave. It shows him throwing an umpire out of the game.

PHONEY RALLY AT WHITE HOUSE AGAINST AZ GOV BREWER
Far from a spontaneous public outburst against AZ, it was instead the usual suspects doing their thing probably on the taxpayers' nickel. CASA of Maryland led by Kimmie Propeak and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) were 90 percent of the crowd of about 60 people. Both organizations had their trademark tee-shirts on. There was a sprinkling of, dare I say, people who when I got close enough to listen spoke little or no English. Those folks were propped in from the microphones and cameras of the almost totally Hispanic media.
I was pleased to see that there were a good number of counter protesters like myself there from MD and VA, and a few AZ flags! I did 6 radio and TV interviews to present the side of American citizens supporting Arizona and concerned about illegal immigration and the need for enforcement of immigration laws nation-wide. I wish I had a picture of those Hispanic journalists when I answered their loaded questions with the facts, it was priceless.
Best of all was an on camera debate I had with some left wing college students trying to argue for the illegals. The usual weak arguments which we have already answered on the Help Save Maryland website.
See http://www.helpsavemaryland.org/files/AmnestyStrawMen.pdf
With one addition. The students tried to argue that illegal aliens pay their fair share of sales, income and social security taxes. I argued that the illegals, even if they do pay taxes from their jobs (which is a crime to work without a green card and use a false ss number) they do consume more of our taxes in using schools, medical, incarceration, day laborer centers, housing and food assistance and other expenses.
Tourists are much better than illegal aliens I argued as they pay sales, hotel, airport and other taxes while spending their money in our economy. But best of all the tourists go home and don't use our schools, medical, housing, energy, food and other taxpayer subsidies! What are they teaching our young adults in college these days??
Barney Frank: Israeli Actions Make Me "Ashamed" As A Jew, Flotilla Activists Are "Innocent"
Frank, in a wide-ranging interview with the Herald, went on to say that "as a Jew" Israeli treatment of Arabs around some of the West Bank settlements makes me ashamed that there would be Jews that would engage in that kind of victimization of a minority.

Revitalizing A Year Old Post
More Discussions On The Downtown Plaza
When Urban Salisbury was having their final meeting, thinking they were no longer going to be around, "I" brought up the Disney Concept. I don't know where Brad Gillis became recognized for such, (he was in the same meeting) but I explained to everyone just how Disney created Disney Land and Disney World.
Allow me just a minute here to explain as I'm confident many of you were not aware of any of this.
You see, Walt Disney had a very creative mind. He came up with this idea of an entertainment theme park but because he didn't have the money to make it work, he went outside the box and created what some of us know as the largest Trade Show ever created, open 365 days a year and millions of visitors.
You see, when you go to Disney World, (as an example) did you ever notice the GE Carousel? Did you notice Chrysler, Ford, Westinghouse, Paramount, etc.? What Walt Disney did was, he went to all of these major manufacturers and said, I'm building this theme park where I'm going to bring you millions of visitors per year. You can buy these 8 acres and here's what I want you to build. I want a roller coaster ride here, (you pay for it) and this area here is where you'll build an exhibition center to market your products. Once each company got on board it was simple to get others.
What Walt Disney did was, he sold them on the fact that he'd only take 35% at the gate and they could all share the rest. Then he went to the state of California and then Florida and said, this is land you can't do anything with. You give me the land and in 20 years I'll bring you $20,000,000.00 worth of taxes. The states agreed and it was no longer a vision, it became an instant success.
I explained this to Urban Salisbury months ago and I stated this shouldn't have to cost the taxpayers a penny. If you have the right vision and tools, anyone could make it work. Mind you, that was the short version of what happened overall but you get the picture.
The Downtown Plaza could be built up just like Pleasure Island in Disney World. I personally feel it needs to be designed around entertainment. Bars, restaurants and then specialty shops along the way. You want an attractions destination to PULL from Ocean City. You want to be years ahead. Think of the draw during Bike Week, Pork in the Park and ALL of the other Hot Rod events and Ocean City Trade Shows.
My idea is to completely shut down the Plaza and even allow outdoor drinking. This way people can smoke a cigar or cigarette and simply open it at both ends. Provide transportation so the college students can have a way to and from and even a bus shuttle to Ocean City.
If you create a entertainment theme park there, there's no question in my mind, (even in the worst economy) it will do well. You have to think OUT OF THE BOX and make it work, just like Walt Disney. I see a fantastic future for property owners to do well on the sale of their properties in order to get out and the future value would be unthinkable!
So rather than coming up with a plan that looks real nice, why not do like I've been doing and create the MOTOR to the entire plan. Something in which you know will work. All they're providing right now is the frame and body but there's NO ENGINE! That's what I'm good at. Imagine a local Seacrets on the Downtown Plaza. Yeah, sure there's going to be some issues and problems. However, all of them can be worked out. You have a Parking Garage that could be FULL every single night and charge for parking. Well, anyway, it's a thought. Let's see where this takes us.
FRUITLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT WINS MARYLAND LAW ENFORCEMENT CHALLENGE AWARD
Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge Recognizes Top Statewide Agencies
Fruitland, MD - The Fruitland Police Department has been named as the winner in its category in the prestigious Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge, a program sponsored by the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA), the Maryland Sheriff’s Association (MSA) and the Maryland State Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Office (MHSO). Winning a Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge signifies excellence in traffic safety enforcement, and the agency’s impact on overall public safety.
“Traffic safety is one of our top priorities,” stated Chief Michael Phillips. “This award is truly special, and it is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Fruitland Police Department.”
The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge promotes competition among Maryland police agencies, while recognizing and honoring those that excel in traffic safety enforcement. Throughout 2009, more than 80 police agencies, sheriff’s offices, and Maryland State Police barracks competed in the program. Awards are given out for each of the 12 categories, with the winner being determined by a panel of law enforcement officials from throughout the State.
“Crashes are avoidable and every fatality on Maryland’s roadways is a tragedy,” said Maryland Chiefs of Police Association President Chief George Johnson. “The [Fruitland Police Department deserves this award for its lifesaving efforts and recognition that traffic safety is public safety.”
“We want to prevent crashes before they happen,” said Ofc. Nick McLeod. “We try and educate people to slow down, buckle up and drive sober, but when those messages do not resonate, we will continue our policy to enforce all of Maryland’s traffic laws to the best of our abilities.”

WHO’s Flu Advisors Got Payments From Roche, Glaxo, Report Finds
The flu expert who recommended using and stockpiling antiviral drugs received payments from Roche, which makes the best-selling antiviral Tamiflu, for lecturing and consulting work when the guidance was produced and published in 2004, according to the report published today in the BMJ. He had also received payments from Glaxo, maker of the second best-selling flu drug Relenza, until 2002, the article said.
European governments spent billions of dollars buying pandemic vaccines and antiviral drugs that went largely unused because the flu remained mild. The European Medicines Agency yesterday said three companies distributed more than 179 million doses of pandemic vaccine in Western Europe, of which at least a fifth was used. The article, which also found that two scientists who prepared annexes to the WHO’s 2004 pandemic guidelines had financial links to Roche, criticizes the lack of transparency of the agency’s expert consultations.
“The investigation reveals a system struggling to manage the inherent conflict between the pharmaceutical industry, WHO, and the global public health system, which all draw on the same pool of scientific experts,” the authors wrote.

Anti-Israel Resolution Makes U.N. Look ‘Foolish,’ Mideast Expert Says
“It makes the United Nations look ridiculous when it comes to solving world problems,” Michael Rubin, a Middle East scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, told CNSNews.com. “After all, the United Nations reacted much more swiftly and with much more fervor to this than they did with regard to the North Korean sinking of the South Korean boat, which could precipitate a war that could kill millions.”
North Korea attacked and sank the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan on March 26, sparking the South to cut off all ties to its northern neighbor. In response, North Korea, a Communist dictatorship, threatened that any further confrontations could lead to war, pointing to its stockpile of nuclear weapons.
Rubin said that the UNSC "has become its own parody” in moving so swiftly to condemn Israel but not moving at all to condemn North Korea.
The UNSC statement, issued May 31, “condemns” Israel’s actions in boarding a fleet carrying pro-Hamas activists, an operation in which activists aboard one of the vessels attacked Israeli sailors who had boarded the boat. Ten of the so-called activists were killed when the Israeli sailors returned fire in what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called self-defense.
However, the UNSC condemnation repeatedly admits that the Security Council has no “independent information” and no idea as to the actual chain of events.
Israel Reports Discovery Of Arms Cache On 'Peace Activists' Gaza Aid Ship
The deaths occurred during close-quarter fighting between individuals travelling in the Mavi Marmara – one of six vessels in a convoy that attempted to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza on 31 May – and members of the Flotilla 13 (Shayetet) naval special forces unit.
Later that day the ship was brought into the Israeli port of Ashdod, where searchers found "a supply of weapons including knives, Molotov cocktails, detonators, wood and metal clubs, slingshots and rocks, large hammers and sharp metal objects", according to the Israel Defence Force (IDF). "In addition gas masks were found, pointing to the prior intention of the ship's passengers to use violence against IDF soldiers who would then be forced to use riot dispersal methods."

Janet Napolitano Offers To Help Stop Illegal Border Crossings — In Saudi Arabia
"It is a very rough border, very difficult to protect from illegal crossings," U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.
In late May, Ms. Napolitano met Saudi leaders to discuss a range of security programs, including training, joint exercises, intelligence and arms sales. Officials said both the Americans and Saudis agreed that the Iranian-backed Shi'ite insurgency from Yemen was the leading threat to Riyad.
Officials said Riyad and Washington were expanding cooperation in protecting the kingdom's borders from insurgents and smugglers. They said the biggest threat was the Shi'ite insurgency in neighboring Yemen, which shares a 1,600-kilometer border with Saudi Arabia.
Officials acknowledged that thousands of Yemenis were infiltrating Saudi Arabia despite recent border security measures. They said many of the Yemeni infiltrators were smugglers.
"So many of our discussions were about how to protect a very tough, geological, topographical border from illegal crossings," Ms. Napolitano said during a visit to the Saudi kingdom on May 31.

Arizona Governor Brewer Wants Separating Fence Completed
Meeting in the Oval Office, Obama said Arizona's law and similar efforts by more than 20 states would interfere with the federal government's responsibility to set and enforce immigration policy.
Neither side appeared to give ground on the contentious issue although both talked about seeking a bipartisan solution.
Obama urged her to "be his partner" in working toward a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's badly fractured immigration system.
Brewer told The Associated Press afterward that she told Obama her state is not ready for the comprehensive solution he favors.
"I said we need to have the fence completed, have more troops on the border and more resources" for aerial surveillance, she said.
Police, Fire Unions Sue City Over Pension
Baltimore's police and firefighters' unions filed a lawsuit against the city in federal court Thursday, contending that officials "knowingly underfunded" their pension plan over the past decade — ignoring the advice of financial experts hired by the city.
The lawsuit threatens to introduce a protracted and costly legal battle into the emotionally charged debate about altering the retirement benefits paid to public safety officers.
If officials do not make drastic changes to the pension system by July 1, the city will owe $65 million that it cannot pay.

The Madoff Circle: Who Knew What?
But an alternate narrative is emerging from the pile of Madoff-related civil suits and court motions that have been filed in the last two years – one in which a small circle of men played knowing, integral roles in the scheme, in some cases benefiting more from it than even Madoff himself.
The evidence for this remains largely circumstantial. These relationships were forged in the days before e-mail, and none of the cases has yet produced anything for public consumption that delivers insights into what these men were thinking. In the one instance in which a judge has ruled on allegations against some of the men, he dismissed the charges for lack of evidence.

Gas Prices Contine Unexpected Fall
Drivers are taking advantage of an unusual summer fall in gas prices.
"It’s lovely compared to what it used to be,” said Orlando Dunn. “Especially since I have a big truck. I’m spending like $4 less to fill it up. I’m happy with that.” AAA Mid-Atlantic has been tracking the price of gas in the area and said that over the past 30 days, gas has dropped 14 cents in the Metro area, with the biggest drop being 21 cents in Virginia. "Gas prices are impacted by what’s happening internationally,” said John Townsend, with AAA Mid-Atlantic. “The situation in Greece, and the situation in Europe, and what’s happening with the Euro has taken some of the wind out of the sail.” Today in the District, we found gas at $2.85, right around the average for DC. But by shopping around we also found $2.73 at the Sunoco station on 15th and U streets NW. Pay in cash and the price drops another 5 cents. Once you leave the District and head past Silver Spring and into Beltsville, the price falls to $2.52 per gallon. "I pretty much know the prices out in Laurel, I live in Hyatsville, and they’re a couple pennies more,” said Genevieve Henry. “I’m out [in Laurel] most of the time, so that’s where I get my gas.” The cheapest we found anywhere was $2.34 at the BP station on Rt. 1 and Southard Drive. But there's a catch, you have to buy a car wash for $6. So did drivers get the car wash? “My car's too dirty, I don’t need one,” said Woody Cheh. But other drivers are cashing in on the deal while it lasts. If you’ve found a cheap gas price in your area take a picture and send it to us at ISEE@NBCWASHINGTON.COM. Make sure to include your name and the location of the gas station.

Sisters Find $18,000 In Duffel, Give It To Owner
Twenty-one-year-old Michelle Pientka and her 16-year-old sister Jessica say they found the bag at a Macey's parking lot Tuesday night. They took it home but didn't look inside until the next morning, when they were startled by the sight.
Spanish Fork police Lt. Steve Adams says car salesman Ben Hunstman called them Tuesday night when he realized he had lost the bag containing cash from recent sales, and couldn't find it by retracing his steps.

Cute Joke
The place was hopping with music and loud conversation and every once in a while "the lights would turn off."
Each time the lights would go out, the place would erupt into cheers.
However, when the revelers saw the nun, the room went dead silent.
She walked up to the bartender, and asked, "May I please use the restroom?
The bartender replied, "OK, but I should warn you that there is a statue of a naked man in there wearing only a fig leaf."
"Well, in that case, I'll just look the other way," said the nun.
So the bartender showed the nun to the back of the restaurant.
After a few minutes, she came back out, and the whole place stopped just long enough to give the nun a loud round of applause. !
She went to the bartender and said, "Sir, I don't understand. Why did they applaud
for me just because I went to the restroom?"
"Well, now they know you're one of us," said the bartender, "Would you like a drink?"
"No thank you, but, I still don't un derstand," said the puzzled nun.
"You see," laughed the bartender, "every time someone lifts the fig leaf on that statue, the lights go out.
"Now, how about that drink?"
Businesses Hire Fewer Workers Than Expected
WASHINGTON - The nation's payroll grew by 431,000 last month, completely reflecting a burst of temporary census hiring by the government. Private payrolls grew at the slowest pace since the start of the year.
The unemployment rate dipped to 9.7 percent from 9.9 percent, as thousands of people left the labor force.
This was as construction employment fell 35,000 after gaining 14,000 in April.

Fire The Cattle Guards
For those of you who have never traveled to the west, or southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area. For some reason the cattle will not step on the "guards," probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails.
A few months ago, President Obama received and was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado . Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the “cattle” guards immediately!!
Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten him out, Vice-President, Joe Biden, intervened with a request that…. before any “cattle” guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining.
And these guys are running our country !!
From The Campaign Trail
What a great week on the campaign trail! This past week saw us visit the Wicomico Chapter of Americans for Prosperity to talk about how best to rein in out-of-control spending in Washington. Over 120 people came out to Salisbury because they want a Congressman who will listen to their concerns. Thank you to all who came out.
On Saturday I had the privilege of walking in the Centreville Memorial Day Parade in Queen Anne's County. It was great to see so many old and new friends along the parade route! A special thank you to our team in Queen Anne's County for making our day a success. After the Centreville Parade we made our way to Kent County for the Chestertown Tea Party. It was such a great day to meet Marylanders from all over the state.
Another day, another great parade! On Sunday we walked in the Ridgley Strawberry Festival Parade, and I am happy to report we were greeted with a warm Caroline County welcome. I even had a chance to sample some wonderful Eastern Shore strawberries.

50 on 50
If you've traveled Route 50 in the past few weeks, you're bound to have seen our Harris for Congress "4x8's" lining the way. That's right, in two short weeks our fantastic volunteer team placed 50 signs on Route 50! A special thank you to all of the property owners who have showed their support for our campaign by letting us place a sign on their property. If you would like to place a large or small sign on in your yard or at your business please email Pat Daly at pat@andyharris.com.
Volunteer of the Week
What do you do when you want to make sure people get the message that Andy Harris will bring fiscal responsibility to Washington, rein in government spending and work to create new jobs for Marylanders? You follow the example of our Worcester County Coordinator, Dick Beatty. Dick took matters into his own hands and went "farm to farm" to make our 50 on 50 program a success in Worcester County. Thank you to Dick and his entire team for making the Lower Shore Harris Country!
OCPD ADVISING OCEAN CITY VISITORS TO BEWARE OF INTERNET RENTAL SCAMS
internet to search for vacation rentals in Ocean City. While popular websites can be a valuable tool in finding reasonable vacation rentals, consumers need to beware of
scammers who are posing as property owners.
Some of the most consistent “red flags” associated with rental scams are demonstrated
through poor grammar, spelling errors, poor capitalization and punctuation on any on-line material. In addition, if a vacation rental owner does not accept credit cards as a form of payment, they should almost always accept a personal check. Most scammers will only take cashiers checks or ask money to be wired to a specific account. Lastly, you should be cautious of a property owner who is hesitant or unwilling to provide additional information in regards to the rental property, such as amenities or photographs.
As a renter you should take additional steps to assure the owner and rentals are
legitimate. There are several tips you should remember to avoid being a victim of an
online rental scam. First, do not wire money to a suspected landlord and remember,
regardless how convincing the tale, make sure the person renting the house to you
actually owns it. Also, verify where you will go and who you will see to pick up the rental key. Make sure that the person and location is valid. Finally, if you have any suspicious concerns, follow your instinct. Even if you have to pay a fee, you are often safer dealing with a licensed real estate agent.
Open Letter To Somerset County Commissioners
Though we applaud the Commissioners for not proposing major tax hikes as Queen Anne’s and Montgomery County have in the past weeks, more has to be done to address our current and future needs.
In the taxpayers’ eyes spending appears excessive within departments in the proposed Somerset budget. Each department should be broken down line by line so public actually knows how their money is being spent. Somerset County is not openly providing a line item budget this year.
Without a line item budget with explanations for large expenditures, like $911,746 spent on Planning and Zoning, we the taxpayers will not be able to give proper feedback that our elected officials ask for.
Lacking a line by line budget with accompanying justification insults the taxpayer and allows for opportunity for government waste and corruption. Waste and corruption by government cannot be supported by excessively burdened taxpayers.
Government services should reflect not just the revenue available, but the actual need of services. There is no point in having a fully funded and staffed department when there is no work to be done. Without a line item budget and open discourse this conclusion cannot be ascertained.
With minimal insight, it can be predicted that 2011-2012 will be more challenging as money from the state and federal agencies dry up, jobs go away and don’t come in, and from an unpredictable property market.
The Commissioners must not remain static, but look to the future anticipating lower revenues and be armed with a lean budget than can withstand economic downturns.
Government cannot tax our way to prosperity. The 2007 largest tax increases in Maryland’s history is hurting Maryland’s businesses, the core of economic prosperity. The “fair long term solution” to our State budget woes was not achieved either by the tax increases.
We ask that the County Commissioners become more transparent with openly providing a line item budget and by learning from Maryland’s excessive spending habits to avoid the temptation for the same failed solution of taxation.
Fiscal restraint now and lowering taxes creates a healthy business climate and a prosperous Somerset County!

A/C Help
I have a neighbor who is a single parent who as a result of having the h1n1 flu shot last fall developed a severe case of Guillain Barre Syndrome. The shot was "strongly recommended" by her employer as she did now want to get it . Now as a result, she has lost her job and medical. She seems to be getting worse instead of better. I was at her house last night and found out that she does not have air conditioning. I was wondering if you knew of anyone that would be gracious enough to come out and fix her ac for free. I thought I read something this winter about a kind man who helped someone who needed their heat fixed on your blog.
I am trying to work on getting her help through the system but as we all now the system has many flaws and moves very slowly. I am trying to keep her from ultimately losing everything she has. She just got health insurance through the state but they too are moving very slowly to get her any help. It is a very frustrating situation - not only for her but for anyone that knows her as she is a very sweet, would do anything for you kind of person. Today she is even unable to walk..her health has declined so much.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Guerrero Fight
There is one thing that remains the same in terms of Fernando Guerrero's scheduled fight. That one thing is that he is still scheduled to fight. However, the date and the place have changed and even the opponent may changed. "Obviously it takes a slight readjustment when you are getting ready for a specific date, opponent and additional altitude training, but in the end we have a little more time to prepare, we will be fighting in an area that is very familiar with Fernando and we eliminate the need to go into altitude training. So it's not a bad thing at all" Said manager/co-trainer Hal Chernoff.
A scheduling change by Showtime, has now moved the bout that was set for June 25th in Albuquerque N.M.to Friday, July 16th. The fight will now take place just over the state line from Memphis TN, at the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven MS.
"We are not always privy to some of the things that happen or the reasons behind them, and the truth is we don't want to get into that part of it right now. Our job is to adjust when it does happen and be ready on fight night. The main thing is we know three of the four key answers that we need to start preparing. We have the date, The weight and the place, all that's left is locking in with an opponent. We have a few different names we are looking at, and hope to have something definite soon." Chernoff added.
Another new twist to this bout is that the One-Two Punch of Porter-Guerrero will round out the televised portion of the card, that will be promoted by Prizefight Promotions. These two are giving the boxing world something very special to watch.
The Guerrero-Porter combination also gives those traveling to the fight more to watch as Shawn "Showtime"Porter has become very well known to all the Guerrero fight fans after fighting here in Salisbury 4 times, twice as a co-main event with Fernando. "Salisbury is like a second home to us" Porter has stated " "I love this place"
The undercard is not yet complete, but in the standard fashion of Prizefight Promotions, it is expected there will be some very exciting bouts to start the night off.
The change of venue also makes it easier for anyone wishing to travel to the fight by flying out of Salisbury to Charolette and on the Memphis.
As soon as more details are finalized we will release any new information.

Aid Ship Nears Gaza, Israel Vows Action
ISTANBUL - A cargo ship trying to break the blockade of Gaza could reach Israel's 20-mile exclusion zone by Friday afternoon, an activist said, but Israel's prime minister vowed the ship will not reach land.
Their dueling comments suggest a potential new clash over Israel's three-year-old blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip — and come only four days after an Israeli commando raid on a larger aid flotilla left nine activists dead.
Greta Berlin, a spokesman for the Free Gaza group, says the 1,200-ton Rachel Corrie is heading directly to Gaza and will not stop in any port on the way. It is trying to deliver hundreds of tons of aid including wheelchairs, medical supplies and concrete.

O'Malley On Health Of The Chesapeake Bay
GOVERNOR O’MALLEY, Governor Mcdonnell, MAYOR FENTY and epa representatives discuss health and future of the bay
O’Malley announces Millions of dollars in Grant money for restoration projects and the expansion of Marylanders Grow Oysters
ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Martin O’Malley joined EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, and other state representatives for the 27th Chesapeake Bay Executive Council today to unveil a new accountability tool for measuring bay restoration progress, Chesapeake Stat, modeled after Maryland’s Baystat, and to highlight progress toward meeting two year milestones designed to accelerate Bay restoration.
“Together, we’ve made real progress in accelerating our bay restoration efforts while increasing our transparency and accountability to our citizens,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “Maryland is on target to hit the first of our two-year milestones that we put in place two years ago, reducing nitrogen by more than 1.3 million pounds. We are now starting to see some positive responses in water quality, bay grass and blue crab populations, but there is still much more work to do.”
Governor O’Malley also highlighted several of the Maryland’s accomplishments including:
o Maryland has protected more than 28,000 acres through Program Open Space, under the leadership of Gov. O’Malley (versus only 6,442 acres during a comparable period during the previous administration) and fully funded the program every year since 2007
o Maryland has established BaySTAT, StreamHealth, GreenPrint, AgPrint and Maryland’s Conservation tracker. These are interactive web-tools, enabling Maryland citizens to hold their government accountable.
o Maryland’s new stormwater program leads the region, now requiring the use of “environmental site design” that will dramatically reduce seditement and nutrient run-off from development.
o Maryland has a new concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) permit issued to control poultry litter at well over 500 of Maryland’s poultry operations for the first time.
o Maryland has worked together with Virginia to increase our blue crab population by 60% – its highest level since 1997.
o Maryland is on the verge of a implementing a new oyster plan that will expand aquaculture opportunities and establish a more effective network of science based sanctuaries, while maintaining a well-managed public fishery
At the Executive Council meeting, Governor O’Malley announced recipients of grants from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund and the expansion of the Marylanders Grow Oysters program.
Six million dollars in grants from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, its highest appropriation to date, will help local communities and landowners reduce nonpoint pollution. This year’s budget sets aside a total of $20 million for the trust fund for the new fiscal year starting in July.
“These dollars are targeted in areas and ways that science shows us will have the best results,” said Governor O’Malley. “This process allows us to select those projects that will deliver the greatest possible benefits to the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.”
The recipients of this year’s grants are: Howard County and Columbia Association; Anne Arundel County; Harford County; Talbot County; Kent County and Chester River Association; Queen Anne’s County, the Town of Centreville and the Corisca River Conservancy; and Baltimore City, Parks and People, and The Herring Run Watershed.
The Marylanders Grow Oysters program is adding 7 new tributaries – the Chester River, the Miles River, Harris Creek, the Wye Rive, Cox Creek, Bodkin Creek, and Swan Creek to the program. These new tributaries will add more than 2,000 oyster cages to the already successful program. More than 61,000 oyster cages are already growing in 12 rivers across the state.
“The Marylanders Grow Oysters program has become quite a movement” said Governor O’Malley. “It shows how committed Maryland citizens are to cleaning up the Bay and taking care of the tributaries that flow through their backyard. Only through the continued commitment of all levels of government, businesses, watershed organizations, citizens and the working men and women of Maryland will be able to achieve our goal of a restored Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries by 2020”.
