Republicans Ride Voter Unrest To Control Of House

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans reaped a windfall from independent voters and tea party activists to seize control of the House in midterm elections, gained seats in the Senate and served notice Wednesday they will confront President Barack Obama with a conservative agenda to cut government and spur private-sector jobs.

"We've been given a second chance and a golden opportunity," Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, No. 2 Republican in the House, said as his party prepared to usher in an era of divided government. He called the outcome a rejection of Obama more than an endorsement of the GOP, cautioning fellow Republicans they must to work to win public confidence.

"People want to see results," he said on CBS's "The Early Show." "They want to see the government go on a diet just like they have."

Republicans scored the biggest party turnover in more than 70 years Tuesday with their win in the House and, in doing so, will dethrone Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi _ a prime target of their campaign _ who had crashed a political glass ceiling and made history with her elevation to speaker four years ago.
Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, overcame a tea party challenge from Republican Sharron Angle in one of the election's most brutally fought races.

  1. The people of Nevada must be frustrated at having to choose the best of 2 evils.

  2. Just one of the examples of the Tea Party shooting itself in the foot. In the push for ideaological homogenity, they threw out candidates who actually knew what they were talking about and had studied the issues for people who can scream loud on t.v. Just glad it didn't work for O'Donnell.

  3. The tea party did not give the Republicans one seat they would not have won anyway. Plus they cost the party a couple seats (like Delaware and Nevada)by running nut cases.

  4. A huge success for the Tea party over all :)
