A new study says people whose mothers smoke a pack a day are more likely to become repeat offenders when they grow up, no matter the baby’s gender.

  1. Probably because any mother dumb enough to smoke while pregnant (like my sister) is probably going to be a crappy parent in the first place.

  2. Makes sense. If you think about it, most middle to above middle class parents are more educated and health conscious. The women who smoke while pregnant are most likely lower-class and/or uneducated, leading to the cycle of many children born in this situation to follow. It's a fact that most criminals are from a lower-class, uneducated background.

I grew up in a lower-class (poorer) family (however am lucky enough to have overcome the cycle), so before anyone gets all up in arms that I'm bashing the poor, I'm just stating statistics.

  3. This study is so messed up. Back in the '50s and '60s, lots of mothers smoked and the kids didn't become criminals.

Not that smoking is good at all, but these studies don't look at the other factors.

Take a mother who smoked in a suburban neighborhood and one who smoked in ghetto and I won't need a grant to tell which kid grows up to be the criminal.

  5. And smoking while pregnant ends up with low birth weight babies too, right? WRONG!
My sister smoked, even though she cut way back and her baby was 8lbs. 11oz. he went on to attend college, not once, not twice but three times and now has a doctorate degree and is a professor at a well known college in Massachusetts - so don't believe everything they say.
It has more to do with the people they grow up around and associate with, and whether they're taught values in the first place.

  6. There are way too many factors that need to be taken into account before drawing such a conclusion. Smoking is blamed for everything! My mother smoked during all 5 of her pregnancies; (not justifying her actions by any means), none of her children have ever been arrested once much less multiple times. Two of the five are successful business owners and the other three are hard workers that know nothing in life is free, hard work is the key to living a productive life.

  7. You women who defend smoking during pregnancy need to be put in a plastic bag and have someone pass gas in it for nine months. How selfish you are to deny an unborn the most healthy terms for their beginning of life.
