Obama To Announce Pay Freeze For Federal Workers

President Obama will announce a pay freeze for federal workers in a statement today, NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

The two-year pay freeze for civilian federal employees will save $2 billion during the rest of the current fiscal year and almost $30 billion over the next five years, the White House said Monday.

There are about 2.65 million civilian employees of the executive branch, per the Washington Post. That's about 8.4 federal workers per 1,000 American citizens.

  3. not all "federal employees" are congress, folks... there are some that work very hard to make ends meet now. (Like me!)

And once the insurance company raises prices in January..... I'll be making less money. So, how is that helping? I'll be in worse shape than what I'm in now.

  4. Is that before or after he gives them the 3% raise currently sitting in a bill in congress?

  5. We just need laws made that says we can only have so many number of FED employees and no more!!! If we can save 30 billion in just 5 years if we freeze spending to the civilian based FED employees... This doesn't include the 1500 workers just hired or soon to be hired in the IRS... And all the people who do jack squat when it comes to their jobs...

I also would like laws in place that says they can be fired if they do not do or properly do their job as hired to do just like all regular workers and any other job other than the FED's... (Example: you come in late or fall asleep at work at your desk, your pretty much fired in most places)...

  6. Why don't they eliminate the useless and redundant jobs?

  7. Come on folks. You know all the answers but are afraid to admit it to yourselves.

The government has set up an oppressive system to keep tabs on each and every one of us. It wants you and me to become dependent on it. That guarantees its existence into the future.

It is a self fulfilling system which destroys America. As private employment ends, we will all work for the government eventually which is communism. The elites will look over us.

  8. Im a little confused. If its a 2 year pay freeze how can it save 30 billion over the next 5 years.

  9. Hey I'm all for it. I am sick of working my ass off and then watching federal workers having every holiday off known to man and getting paid to do less work then I do in the private sector job.

It'll save us money and you know what, the federal employees will be just fine from what I can see.

  10. Federal employees include doctors ad nurses, civilians attached to th military, etc. Yet teachers remain untouched.

  11. You know what I think would be a better solution?

    Pay cuts. Across the board.

    And, wait for it....

    Hiring freeze.

That's what would be a good idea to me.

  12. I agree with Hal
There needs to be a re-evaluation of all federal staffing levels and pay and benefits. I know people who make 2-3 times more working for the govt than the same job would pay in the private sector. Federal managers have 2 (sometimes 3) secretaries while their equivalent positions in the private sector are sharing secretaries with 3 or 4 other managers.

  13. i think if we just release viruses and other deadly disease in the poor parts of the country and in mexico (swine flu), china (SARS), indonesia (unknown flu), and haiti; we could finally get rid of the dredges on society.
    oh wait...

  14. Funny how in the not so distant past, so many of you joked on gov. employees as being apart of the minimum wage skill-less class workforce. Now all of a sudden gov. workers live high on the hog. LOL

  15. I'd be MUCH more impressed if he volunteered to cut (or eliminate) HIS pay, or suggested to Congress that THEY take a pay cut or reduce/eliminate their benefits & pension plans, which, by any standard, are princely...how about a freeze on all the overseas junkets Congress takes? None of THAT is going to happen, but as someone who makes $250,000 dollars a year, has a private army to protect him 24-7, has the absolutely BEST health care in the world and its fully paid (for life), is already a millionaire, and has all travel expenses and housing FULLY paid, including all meals and utilities, it's rather EASY for the President to suggest EVERYONE ELSE bites the bullet. How about he start with getting his aunt off welfare after 11 years. THAT oughta save the taxpayers a little bit....

No, what we joked about not too long ago was how useless and incompetent most if not all government workers are. Oh, and how they couldn't make a living in the private sector where thay would actually have to perform.
Anyone collecting a check from the taxpayers is a slug!

  18. I've got news for Obama. To little and to late.

By my calculations - the average federal worker should be taking enormous cuts in order to get things back to equilibrium.

Obama is just trying to save face in light of what has racently transpired during the last Congressional elections. But I've got news for him - he is to late as the wrath of the Nation has turned-on him and the liberal Congress.
