Did You Get Suckered By Delmarva Power's 'SmartMeter' Offer?

Energy police are about to invade your home with "smart meters," new electronic/Internet based devices that determine precisely how much energy you are using, Jerome Corsi's Red Alert reports.

While the devices are being sold as energy-saving tools, the technology also gives the energy police the ability to shut you off or charge you additional if you refuse to install energy saving measures demanded by green ideologues and enforced by utility companies doing their bidding, Corsi reported.

The California Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC, has given permission to deploy an Advanced Meter Infrastructure project that will upgrade both metering and communications software to install 5.1 million electricity meters and 4.2 million natural gas meters in homes in the Pacific Gas & Electricity in California.

Orlean Koehle, an active tea-party member and a member of the Sonoma County Republican Central Committee, has begun fighting back.

"What is a smart meter?" Koehle asks. "It is one that contains RF (radio frequency) so that it can be remotely controlled and read. No longer will a meter reader have to come to your home to read the meter. It will all be done remotely."

What is the concern about the energy police?

"When all is in place, the smart meter will not only keep track of how much electricity you are using, but it will be able to control, regulate, and ration your use of that electricity," she wrote. "If 'big brother' decides that you are using too much heat in the winter time, or too much air conditioning in the summer time, or using too much hot water in your showers or washing machine (even if you are willing to pay for that extra usage), the use of power will be automatically turned down."

Koehle's not only concerned that green bureaucrats want to impose their global warming agenda on a free marketplace, but that in the future no one will be able to avoid the coming ideologically driven intrusion into homes.

Pretty soon, Koehle warns, all appliances will be replaced with those containing RF chips.

  1. Delmarva power routinely gouges it's customers no surprise they're working with the crooked government!

  2. I cant believe that people fell for the "smart meters". Why in the world would you let ANYONE control what goes on in your own home!

  3. I do not think that will be a problem with DPL.
They have consistently lied on my bills and labeled them as actual readings when they are not. It's either that or their own people can not read, as I have consistently been either under read or over read by 100's of kWh.
Their customer service should be nominated as WORST IN THEIR PROFESSION. I do not know what is more insulting, their lies or the fact that they think I am that stupid as to believe them.
I was told, "oh just call it in and they will fix it", well that was a joke, when you call in for a corrected bill you get the runaround and lied to, it took 4 phone calls just to get them to bill me correctly.
They are too stupid AND too lazy to monitor anything. They can not even fulfill minimal customer service functions, those advanced tasks are going to be non-existent

  4. Delmarva Power has installed a new "smart meter" at our home - we had no choice in the matter, however, they will NOT be putting in their thermostat!
    We live in Delaware.

  6. I work at Delmarva Power and the smart meters are actually meters being installed in DE only that you do not get credit for. The credit program you are referring to is for installing a programmable thermostat, which is a completely voluntary program. Read about it on www.delmarva.com it is called Energy Wise Rewards.

The smart meters are not being used to control how much electricity you use. They are being used so that we can read the meters remotely (which cuts down on cost of meter readers, cuts down on mistakes for misread meters, cuts down on vehicles and gas used), and turn on or off power remotely if the customer requests it. One day they may also be used for cutting off power for nonpayment and they can also alert the company of tampering (i.e. customer turning themselves on illegally etc)

Think about it, if 'big electric' thinks you are using too much and decides to cut your usage like the article states, who would benefit from that? Not the company - because the company gets paid based on how much you use.

  7. "Big Electric" most certainly WILL take steps to cut the usage when they think it's appropriate to do so! I can't believe you put that statement out there Proud DP Rep.!
You're telling all of us that your company won't lessen the power to a home when it's "PEAK" usage time, when you're trying to get the word out for everyone to limit their power usage for your grid?
Give me a break - I can see it now - it WILL happen.
You may have put your smart meter outside but you will NEVER install your thermostat inside my home no matter how much in "credits" you offer. I'm controlled by the electric company enough as it is!
Why not give us your name so when this does come to fruition, everyone will know who it was from Delmarva Power that lied today?!

  8. After months upon months of trying to get someone to come check my meter I finally gave up. With a thermostat set at 64-66 in a 1300sq ft home there is no way in heck I am using close to $400 a month for electric...but no one seems to want to hear it! When I have no AC or Heat running there is no way my bill is $250 but once again apparently I don't know what I am talking about because I was told they will not come check the meter "If we checked everyone's meter that thought they were being overcharged, our service people wouldn't have time to do actual work."

As soon as I can I will be switching to alternative power because Delmarva Power is a complete rip off.

  9. 3:53 - go here, file a complaint and let the PUC fight with them. That will get their attention. Don't quit, thats what they want, that's their goal.

  10. Anon 3:01.. That makes no sense. If the power company cuts the usage then they don't make money. You only pay for what you use. The electronic meter should more accurate. I live in delaware and have had no problems with my meter. They can't control your usage, that is different equipment. Whoever wrote the article did not do their research...

  11. Folks,
Delmarva Power and a lot of utilities have been wanting to use this technology for a long time. The Utilities claims that it will help with billing accuracy. This may be partly true. 12:54 made a statement that "it cutsdown the cost of meter readers". This is a way that the utilities can eliminate some union jobs. 12:54 also stated that Delmarva Power will be able to "turn on or off power remotely if the customer requests it. One day they may also be used for cutting off power for nonpayment and they can also alert the company of tampering (i.e. customer turning themselves on illegally etc)"
Delmarva Power can't stand to purchase power from higher costing power producers when the demand is high such as Summer and Winter peak periods. This folks will deffinately give them the ability to shut you off during those high cost times. This is when the utilities start to lose money from the non-commercial customers.

    Respectfully,
    Rock Doctor

With all that "cut-down", you might think a bill would be a little lower.

  13. The smart meter that Delmarva installed in my house destroyed my AM Radio reception. All I could get was one high pitched tone across the AM Band. I filed a complaint with the PSC, which got Delmarva's attention. They sent out someone to look at the meter. Then they called and said they needed to get inside the house. The tech came in, held a receiver near an outlet, and noted RF interference in the line. He left. Then I got a 3rd phone call saying they needed access inside the house again. At this point, for multiple reasons, I had decided to put the house up for sale, and stopped bothering with Delmarva and their obvious stall tactics. I don't know what brand of meter DP uses, but the one I got clearly created major radio interference, and DP had no intention of doing anything substantive about it. This is just one more issue related to these meters and Delmarva's approach to customer service.

  14. I had the smart meter installed last year, I have to say, my bill went up. I live in an apartment, one person, with gas heat. I unplug unused appliances, keep lights off, etc. Well this went to prove to me, the smart meter is not too smart. I am contacting the PSC soon to get this issue checked, since of course the stall tactics of our wonderful utility company is in full swing. What a huge BS statement of more accurate meter readings, who do you think paid for all these so called meters? This is why our bills are high, nothing is free and especially with utility companies.

  15. Delmarva Power in controlling my thermostat! In the middle of the night I hear my heat come on. I go downstairs to investigate and the thermostat is illuminated??? The only time the unit lights up is if someone has tampered with it. I go over and I have the temperature set at 68 degrees, the house is registering 69…SO WHY IS THE HEAT RUNNING??? Also, the setting KEEP CHANGING. At 2am I make sure it is on Heat and 68 degrees. When I hear the heat “kick on” again I run downstairs to check the thermostat and it is on HEAT1 AND 72 DEGEREES!!! I am not crazy, it is only me in the house. I have lost sleep over this, I know they are turning this thermostat on periodically. NO WAY MY HEAT IS OVER $400 A MONTH, I AM NEVER HOME. I am calling them today to remove this device from my home. I am taking the control back!!! Rip-off Company!
