Another Revenue Source Bites The Dust, And You Won't Read About It In The Daily Times!

The Board of Ed, though still crying of not enough money for the kiddies, has found money laying around to buy a house at 1203 Robert Street. The purchase price is said to be under $100,000 and the property is between the Wicomico Early Learning center and East Salisbury Elementary.

At the November meeting, board members voted to acquire the property unanimously. Board members Marvin Blye and Robin Holloway were absent. Nothing about negotiating property was on the published agenda for the Open or Closed session and the County Council was not aware of the board's plan.

Well, folks, Here's another piece of real estate that comes off the property tax rolls for both city and county government. More county and city revenue gone, and yet the Board of Ed is still out spending like there's no end.

  1. you mean the Wicomico Early Learning Center? The place where full time, full paid teachers get the entire afternoon for "planning period" while $18,000 assistants do all the work and teach?

  5. Just what are they going to do with it? Not much land for expansion (.25 acre), and still the location of the school is terrible. Who makes these decisions?

  6. Plans are also in place for the Nature Conservancy to purchase 800 acres of farmland in Shavox. This will also be using taxpayer money to remove property from the tax rolls.

  7. Please$ 18,000????? More like$ 12,000! look at the WCBOE pay schedule.

  8. WHY is the Board of Education buying property??? For what? Under what authority?

  9. The Nature Conservancy is a private non-profit, how is taxpayer money going to the Conservancy? As far as removing property from the tax rolls, I do not think the current farm tax rate on 800 acres is going to be missed, especially when it is weighed against the benefit of preserving the land forever. It will be a win/win many times the landowner can still farm or timber the land, and they can get the financial support to help them do it without selling to real estate speculators.

  10. for $100,000 they could have bought the old fire station instead.

  11. The Nature Conservancy is a private non-profit, how is taxpayer money being used to purchase the land? As far as the loss of tax revenue, the annual tax on 800 acres of farmland is not very much money, especially when it is weighed against the benefit of preserving the land forever. Many times the landowner can continue to farm and timber the land, all the while getting the financial help to not fall victim to the real estate speculators or bank foreclosure.

  12. Dr. Fredericksen needs to go. I hear he is bullying staff, spending money like it will never run out and telling the Board what they have to do. The Board President does nothing. We need an elected Board.

  13. To say that Dr. Fredricksen is bullying his staff is the understaement of the year! My wife is a secretary over at the BOE, and if eve half of what she says is true, he just rules with an IRON FIST with no regard for anyone or anything. Now he is buying up land? Maybe he is going to start a halfway house for all of the criminals (er, students) and have them supplement the revenue base by selling drugs out of it! That neighborhood is perfect for it - the only one maybe better is over in the Prince Street area! Speaking of which, has anyone been over there during bus dismissal. What a ZOO! I was coming down spring ave. today about 2:45 and the place was a human disaster area! If you could just see all of the human trash there, it just boggles the mind! I know that a kid got hit over there last month or so, and it is a wonder that we aren't reading about kids getting killed there on a daily basis! Instead of buying up land, why not use the money for a couple of cops to go over there to keep that bunch of idiot parents from killing each other! Oh, yeah, I forgot - he could care less about anything. In fact, I'm pretty sure his lilly white butt doesn't go anywhere near that place. Maybe if he would actually show his face at a school that really needs help, something could be done about that school instead of letting it turn into another state run corrections facility!

  15. The Board owns a house near North Salisbury school also. Sits empty. Better than renting to undesireables though. Sell the properties and pay the working teachers more money... And lose the NEA and the unions.
