Here's an type of opt-out list we don't often write about: Corporal punishment in schools is legal in lots of states, but if you assumed parents could always opt-out, you'd be mistaken. According to a report from WHNT in Alabama, one student was beaten until he was bruised because he failed a science test.

good the kids need it. besides there is an opt out option...send them to another school.
ReplyDeleteIn a country where parents are constantly being judged for how they discipline their children and can be prosecuted for child abuse if they use anything other than an open hand to the bottom this seems a little much. I am not saying paddling should be banned, but there should definitely be an opt out option. There should also be prior consent from the guardian before this type of discipline is carried out.
ReplyDeleteI know if a teacher or principal used a paddle on my child because he/she had a low test score all heck would break loose when I found out about it. I witness a specific teacher grabbing children by the arm with force and screaming in the children's faces; I tell you those kids aren't mine but it really boarders on assault and abuse. If it were my child I would surely be reporting her to the police and pursuing charges against her and a lawsuit against the school district. Along with the principle because the principal has witnessed the abuse and doesn't intervene. I have actually stepped in once because there is absolutely no reason a grown adult should scream and make verbal threats while physically shoving a child to the ground as she cries in fear.
I just don't understand why the laws are so strict against parents but teachers seem to be able to abuse a child and no one sees a problem with that. I am an involved active parent that loves my children and I would surely catch an assault charge if a teacher ever put their hands on my child out of anger.
We do not own our bodies in this country. That has been well established for decades. What is the fuss?
ReplyDeleteOur government owns our bodies and directly controls what we put into it. If we disobey or act as if we own our bodies they have demonstrated literally millions of times in the past that they will take control of our physical bodies and place us into a prison under the threat of death.
They will also taser us if we refuse to provide I.D. upon request etc.
Wake up America from your slumber. A little folding of the hands to sleep . . .
Some kids have a problem reading and comprehending (like me). This does NOT help to be beaten and threatened. This only makes things worse.
ReplyDeleteMy wife taught at an opt out school in a little town in Oklahoma. The school was a town school with kindergarten at one end and 12th grade at the other end. The majority of the problem children were..... you guessed it- the children of parents that opted out. The ones that did get spanked didn't forget it.
ReplyDeleteParents are not parenting anymore and are preoccupied with partying.
ReplyDelete9:55 I agree there are too many "parents" more concerned with other things than their children. However I, like many, do parent my children and spend my time being a parent teaching and proctor others children as well. Which leads me to feel no one has the right to "parent" my child other than me! I have invested 10 years in raising upstanding citizens so I do not feel a school, teacher, or (fill in the blank) has any right to use their standards for what they believe my child should be.
ReplyDeleteI have a child with a disability that has caused him to earn low test scores for the first time ever in his life. He was in tears when he didn't earn an honor roll certificate for the first time. So as someone that does parent and educate my child I feel the school is not my child's parent. They are there to teach new ideas, concepts, and to educate my child. I am doing a dang good job at raising them so I do not need someone else stepping in to do my JOB! I didn't give up a career to be a parent just for someone else to think they are the ones that make all the decisions in my child's life and education.
Corporal punishment is necessary for the kids who act up and rob my child of an education !
ReplyDeleteCorporal punishment is not appropriate for academic problems like failing tests but I have no problem with it being used to discipline little junior delinquents. And I guarantee you there are no kids at this school in Alabama walking around with their pants hanging down cussing out teachers and terrorizing other students......

ReplyDeleteif what you say is true and you are one of the few parents that actually acts like a parent, then im sure these paddles would not apply to your kid. people look at this like its all the kids that get beat. its not. they target the ones that deserve it. and we all know who they are.
11:36 what if your kid is the one robbing other's of an education?
ReplyDeleteWhen you hit a child you are the one that is out of control.
