Fact Check: Education Costs Have Risen Under O’Malley

Claim: Record investment, tuition freezes, GCI investment.
Fact: Education costs have risen under O’Malley and the Governor plans to raise tuition again if reelected.
O’Malley increased cost of college by 26%:  The cost of going to the University of Maryland College Park, for example, actually increased $5,767 – or 26% -- since Martin O’Malley has taken office. These costs include tuition, room, board, and other mandatory fees.  The same can be said for several other public institutions in Maryland, such as Salisbury University and Towson University. So while O’Malley says he froze tuition working families are actually being forced to pay more to send their child to college under Martin O’Malley. (University of Maryland College Park, Annual Tuition and other Fees. Accessed 10/14/2010)
College Park President confirms looming tuition hikes:  Dr. Wallace Loh, president of the University of Maryland, tells WYPR in the linked interview that the biggest challenge facing UMD is, “constrained state support” and that there is “a little bit of room to have some increases in tuition” and “the question is not whether it will rise but by how much.” (Maryland Morning. The Low Down With Dr. Loh, WYPR,  8/18/10)
Even worse, O’Malley plans to raise tuition if reelected:
O’Malley plans a 26% increase in tuition after re-election: Tucked way towards the back of Martin O’Malley’s last budget it shows he’s planning a 26.5% increase in tuition if he’s reelected (5.3% per year) Appendix F: http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?65-1056-2585-125-10611

  1. Not to argue with the data...but what should you expect? If the costs to operate the University go up, shouldn't the fees go up?

And as a Republican, isn't Ehrlich pleased that these costs weren't passed on to the taxpayers? That they were born by the people that are using the services provided?

To my way of thinking, that's the way it should be.
