Cities Weigh Letting Noncitizens Vote

PORTLAND, Maine -- Like his neighbors, Claude Rwaganje pays taxes on his income and taxes on his cars. His children have gone to Portland's public schools. He's interested in the workings of Maine's largest city, which he has called home for 13 years.

There's one vital difference, though: Rwaganje isn't a U.S. citizen and isn't allowed to vote on those taxes or on school issues. That may soon change.

Portland residents will vote Nov. 2 on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

Noncitizens hold down jobs, pay taxes, own businesses, volunteer in the community and serve in the military, and it's only fair they be allowed to vote, Rwaganje said.

  1. I'm sorry, think what you may, but as far as I'm concerned the right to vote belongs to citizens ONLY. People, even though here legally & have legal residence, who are not citizens should not have a say in our government including voting for elected officials. If they want to vote, the apply for citizenship.

  3. Wait just a minute!
"proposal to give "legal residents" who "are not US Citizens". What??
Are we referring to people with GREEN CARDS who are citizens of ANOTHER country??
That's the understanding I get from this!
I cannot believe US CITIZENS are this stupid! Whoever these people are sitting on these town councils who are in favor of this need to be booted out. Those who actually vote to approve such a thing are even worse - I don't know that treason is the right crime description but they're definitely not voting for what's best for OUR country!

  4. I agree with the first two commenters. America is a joke now and we have to point the blame at the Americans that voted for liberal candidates like Obama. Come on now what part of name Barrack Hussein Obama is American? None, just like himself he isn't an American. This country is at war with Muslim terrorist and you idiots vote for a person that is a Muslim with a Muslim name. You people make me want to PUKE!
