The Wicomico County Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., due to schools being closed on the regular Tuesday meeting day. An agenda is posted www.wcboe.org.

Friday, Sept. 17
Transition I Fund-Raising Lunch with Special Guest Fernando Guerrero
Café 3, Wicomico High School

The first fund-raising luncheon of the year for the Wicomico High School Transition I classroom will take place Friday, Sept. 17, with guests from the school system having a great lunch to benefit students while meeting professional boxer Fernando Guerrero. Luncheon guests from the school system either dine in, carry out, or have their lunch delivered to an office within Wicomico High (deliveries and carryouts must be ordered in advance; dine-in guests may just come in). Lunch - including a choice of fried chicken, BBQ chicken or pulled pork, sides, roll, dessert and drink - is served from 10:50 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Guerrero, a nationally recognized boxer who as a Parkside High graduate who maintains close ties with his community, will arrive around 11:30 a.m. Thanks to generous community and restaurant support, the students and staff of Transition I are able to host luncheons throughout each school year to raise money to help cover the cost of a history field trip. Last year’s destination was Philadelphia and Valley Forge, and this year’s students will visit a Civil War site in connection with their studies. Transition I is a classroom dedicated to helping certificate students become as independent as possible. Teachers work with them to advance their academic levels, daily living skills, social skills, and work skills to the point that they could eventually live on their own, supporting themselves. Each of our students is involved in job training or a paid job in the community for at least two mornings per week. Every semester each student who is not in a paid job moves to another work experience to expand their vision of what they would like to do for a living when they leave school. Assembly with Actress Sammi Hanratty Northwestern Elementary School

Northwestern Elementary will welcome young actress Sammi Hanratty at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 (instead of Sept. 17) for a presentation. She is known from the big and small screen, making her television movie debut starring opposite Lacey Chabert and Wendie Malick in ABC Family's "Hello Sister, Goodbye Life." Sammi quickly built her resume with notable guest star and recurring roles on ABCs "Pushing Daisies" (Young Chuck), "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody", "House M.D.", and CBS' "The Unit" with her older sister Danielle [Hanratty]. She also played “Chrissa Maxwell" in HBO Films' "An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong."

Saturday, Sept. 18
Anti-Bullying Rally
Sailwinds Park, Cambridge

Shore students are invited to take part in a back-to-school Anti-Bullying Rally Sept. 18 at Sailwinds Park. (Due to scheduling issues, television and film actress Sammi Hanratty will not be able to attend, but the event will go on as planned.) The rally is free and open to all from 12-4 p.m. at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge with games, the Horn Point Laboratory touch tank, moonbounces and rock-climb-slide, McGruff the Crime Dog, many other activities, and prizes.
