It doesn’t get much dicier than this.
In essentially simultaneous transactions, the Town of Berlin recently agreed to purchase land – for which it has no immediate plans but was promoted by Mayor Williams as a good deal, at twice the price that the seller paid for it in 2009 – and a consortium of companies affiliated with the seller contributed a total of $2,500 to Williams’ campaign for a seat in Maryland’s House of Delegates. As the good old boys of Berlin say, “it’s just a ca-ching , , , ca-ching thing.” But even they are asking, why they didn’t wait until after the election in November to contribute, not to mention the primary – DUMB.
And there’s another interesting detail: that much higher price to be paid by Berlin is supported by an appraisal made by the firm of Wicomico County Councilman Wm. McCain, who recently told the public that $300,000 per acre was a fair price for land across the street from the Civic Center.
We’ve got to give credit to the Daily Times for shining a spotlight on this shenanigan, which may cost Mr. Williams his political career, except possibly in Berlin. When running for elective office, it’s not good to be caught with your pants down and hand in the cookie jar.
And, will anyone care or do anything. Salisbury taxpayers got ripped off in a big way on the purchase of the crenberry bog where the new firehouse is...and, the seller got the benefit of a "charitable contribution" costing us even more. No one cared, not even the state comptroller. Who is watching the hen house?
ReplyDeleteGeez did Gee and those council members ever get hosed. Seems like that acreage is the only parcel in the whole country that hasn't depreciated in value since it's purchase what a year ago.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'll be voting for someone who tends to make such poor business decisions using taxpayers money.
Just another State worker trying to get ahead.
ReplyDeleteWhat a racket Mr. McCain ("Big Bucks Bill") has going.
ReplyDeleteJoel Todd:
ReplyDeleteAre you going to do anything about this scam of the taxpayers?
Let's "retire" Williams ASAP.
ReplyDeleteAnother fine job by Bill "What number do you want" McCain!
ReplyDeleteWhat was that word that Willie Don had for the Eastern Shore?
ReplyDeleteGee Williams - can't IMAGINE what he'd do in Annapolis.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't have the right values or mentality to do what needs to be done...he'd be more of the same.
Shame on you McCain & Williams!
