$100K Settlement Reached In Fatal Bay Bridge Crash

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A settlement has been reached in the fatal crash off the Bay Bridge in the summer of 2008, WTOP has learned.

The family of John Short, 57, who died in the early morning hours of Aug. 10 when he swerved his 18-wheeler off the bridge to avoid hitting then 19-year-old Candy Baldwin's oncoming Camaro, has accepted the $100,000 limit payable by Baldwin's insurance policy, her attorney Ted Staples said.

Pictures on MySpace of Baldwin, who admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, show her with a bottle of liquor behind the wheel of a car, prompting police to investigate whether she was drunk at the time of crash.

After a long investigation, Baldwin was only charged with traffic offenses. She is now 21, married, pregnant and living in Alaska.

Her lawyer says she is remorseful over Short's death.

"You've got to be really careful about what you put on Facebook, because it doesn't go away," Staples says.

"Just hitting the delete button or hide button doesn't mean it's gone."

Staples says prosecutors and attorneys now routinely scour social networking sites, looking for incriminating postings
