PREVIEW: The Shorebirds and Suns meet for a doubleheader after rain washed away last night’s scheduled game two. The Shorebirds are 1-7 this season in doubleheaders. Their only win came on May 18th in game two against West Virginia. The Shorebirds have been swept in three straight doubleheaders. The Suns are 8-2 in doubleheaders.
BUNDY TWIRLS COMPLETE GAME: Shorebirds starter Bobby Bundy tossed a nine-inning complete game on Monday night in the 4-2 win over Lakewood. He throw just 88 pitches. He became the first Shorebirds pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game since July 23, 2008 when Sean Gleason tossed a complete game against Hickory. The last nine inning complete game prior to Gleason’s was in 2005 when Luis Ramirez tossed a nine-inning complete game against West Virginia (July 2). Chris Tillman (twice) and Nathan Moreau are the only other pitchers in the Orioles farm system with nine-inning complete games.
MOST STEALS SINCE ‘08: T.J. Baxter stole two bases on Monday night to up his total to 32 on the season. The last Shorebirds player to steal more than 32 bases in a season was Matt Angle in 2008 (37). Kyle Hudson led last year’s club with 31 steals.
HITLESS: Steve Bumbry is hitless in his last 22 at-bats. His batting average has dipped from .279 to .263. He did not play in the last two games of the Lakewood series.
PLAYER TO WATCH: JAMES BRANDHORST
Reliever James Brandhorst is the only original member of the Shorebirds bullpen that is still pitching in the pen. He has not allowed a run in his last five outings (7.0 innings). Brandhorst has only issued three hits during that span. His ERA has dipped from 4.09 to 3.53 during the stretch. Brandhorst ranks third on the club in strikeouts with 60. He leads the pitching staff with 40 total appearances on the year.
