POWER CLIP SHOREBIRDS 4-3 IN GAME ONE OF SERIES

Shorebirds Fall to 16-21 in the Second Half

Charleston, WV
– The West Virginia Power tallied four runs in the first inning and held on for a 4-3 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds in game one at Appalachian Power Park. The Shorebirds have dropped seven of their last eight games.

The Power jumped on Kenny Moreland in the first inning. David Rubinstein led off with a single. After stealing second, he scored on a double to left by Jarek Cunningham. Evan Chambers then singled. Aaron Baker followed with a ground rule double to right-center field to plate Cunningham. The next batter, Jose Hernandez single to score Chambers. Three batters later, Jesus Brito doubled to score Hernandez. The Power batted around in the first inning.

The Shorebirds began the uphill climb in the fifth inning. Justin Dalles reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Garabez Rosa singled Dalles to second. Then, T.J. Baxter hit a slicing double towards the left field foul pole to plate both runners, which cut the deficit to 4-2. Baxter came around to score on a fielding error by Cunningham on a grounder off the bat of Ty Kelly.

Shorebirds starter Kenny Moreland left after the sixth inning. He allowed nine hits and four runs. Moreland allowed just three hits in five shutout innings between the second and sixth innings.

Brian Parker tossed two scoreless innings in relief. The right-hander also struck out three batters.

Power starter Jason Erickson earned the win in six strong innings. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs. Eliecer Navarro silenced the ‘Birds in the final three innings. He allowed one hit and fanned three batters.

The Shorebirds play game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
