Lawmakers Consider Ending Citizenship For Children Of Illegal Immigrants

The federal court decision blocking key provisions of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect could light a fire under lawmakers considering an alternative -- and some say radical -- approach to reining in illegal immigration.

Lawmakers since last year have been kicking around a proposal to bar U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants from becoming U.S. citizens. Such a move, which has been ridiculed by legal scholars, would be a drastic reinterpretation of the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment.

But those supporting the move say it removes a key incentive luring illegal immigrants over the border. And with Arizona lawmakers now prohibited from requiring police to check immigration status, the option might be back on the table.

  5. 12:08 - let me talk slower for you.

Most of the rabid right-wing cry loud and long that they are "strict Consitutionalists" (whatever that means) and want the Consitution to be followed in the manner the framers intended (whatever that was.)

Additionally, these idealogues cower in fear and stocpile armaments because of a fictitious fear regarding the socialist takeover of America and her freedoms from liberal-Obama loving-Kool Aid drinkers.

Their argument is: "The Constitution is perfect. Don't mess with it, you morons." However, these same people are ready to try and repeal the 14th Amendment to the Constitution because they believe that this is the cause of all of their problems.

We love the Constitution. Let's change it!

12:08 - please justify this double standard. (if you do, you would be the first.)

12:40 is right. You idiot right wing loons love to cite the Constitution and how it's perfect, and then turn right around and want to change it. Just be honest with everyone. You hate brown people and you don't want them in here messing up your vision of a white America.

  14. I say, Go for it. I'm sick and tired of these "anchor babies" receiving more government assistance then my child. These illegal mothers act like pregnant women who commits a miscellaneous crims, end up in jail a month and a half before their due date; so that the state will pay the delivery bill. Most of these women are indigent. And, with this new Obamacare. how else will they pay for deliveries. When will American begin to take care of their own U. S. born citizen with legally born American parents.

  15. People fear immigrants of color coming into the country. No one complains about the Europeans. The only reason Arizona supported that bill was to give jobs to blue collar white men. They feel their work is stolen from illegals. We have to remember that all our ancestors came from another country, especially if you are not full blooded native american indian. I don't like illegals, but only illegal people of color are targeted with such laws.

  16. 9:04 What white people are streaming across the border by the millions bankrupting our health care system and committing constant crime ? This country can only absorb so many immigrants per year and they need to assimilate to the American way of life not the other way around .
People like you are blinded by racism because you are the racist !

  17. Bravo! Bravo!
Should have been done a LONG time ago!
If one of the parents is legal, then the child should be legal but otherwise - no to automatic citizenship! Period!
