It was Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton’s number one campaign promise. It took 14 months to deliver. Ireton promises that it will help decrease crime and blight. Is Ireton’s new plan to regulate the city’s landlords thoughtful policy or simply a political ploy for next spring’s District 2 city council elections?
Personally, I would speculate that it is an attempt to enact a meaningful policy. There is also no doubt that it is a political ploy.
One day Ireton is all but kissing Louise Smith’s ass in front of the courthouse. Another he is threatening her on video. SAPOA already owns council members Shanie Shields and Gary Comegys. Smith seems to have been merely renting her vote to them. With a frontal attack by Ireton, where does he expect Smith to run to? She has all but officially announced her re-election bid.
Less than 24 hours out of the wrapper, my bet is that Ireton’s proposal will be DOA; or so heavily amended to suit SAPOA that he’ll have to veto it. NEXT – Smith runs with open arms to Kris Adams and the electioneering thugery she so ham handedly exhibited during Ireton’s run for mayor. Buckle up Jim – it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
this feel good legislation will not solve the problem. Untill salisbury brings its rentals below 50% of home ownership we are all screwed.
ReplyDeleteSalisbury residents who own their homes don't realize what a break they get from the large rental industry in Salisbury. Rental property does not have the benefit of the homestead tax credit, so pays tax based on the full appraised value each year, but owner-occupied homes pay based on the older and lower asseseed value when the home or condo was purchased.
ReplyDeleteIf the rental homes got the same treatment, the tax rate would have to be much higher.
I viewed the slum house of the week...Dont see what is wrong with it...unless that it has NO grass and what grass there is is 8"'s tall?? I am sure there are worse looking houses in slisbury.
ReplyDelete1:07, b.s. If there weren't so many crappy rentals in this town, it wouldn't need so much police, code checks and all that.
ReplyDeleteNothing against renters. Got nice folks right next to me with a landlord that does things right. I'm talking about the ones that are scummy and have scummy people in their houses. Salisbury got landlords that rent by the week for cash. Do the tax math on that.
Salisbury's a cash cow that's been milked into collapse. Moo.
Sadly I have learned that I voted for another candidate full of promises. This man talks the talk, but stumbles all over the place when he tries to walk the walk. The only things that he does well and cares about is drinking and partying. He's quick to tell you that too. His foul mouth and use of profanity invokes a deep anger whenever I'm in his presence. Salisbury we are in deeper trouble than before.SAPOA is wagging the dog in Salisbury and we get the fleas.
ReplyDeleteI understand it took $10,000 to draw this plan up---Is that correct? If so----there goes more money out the door by the time Council gets finished scrutinizing it!
ReplyDeletePeople Should Be Held Responsible for their Rentals---& have the right to rid the property if not in compliance with the laws of the town!
Clearly 1:07 doesn't understand the homestead tax credit. Those who bought their homes at the top of the market are paying plenty and those who bought years ago are paying city taxes on a fixed value, but with the market what it is, it's probably closer than they would like you to believe. The big tax breaks come into the picture when the rental owners swap their properties back and forth without transfer taxes...a loophole that should be fixed by the state.
ReplyDelete1:49 - look at calls for service, and I bet you have your answer. There's properties in town that have 30+ calls within the past 12 months.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the promises he made to install filters on all of the outflow pipes carrying storm water into the river? And didn't he make a promise about people being able to swim in the Wicomico? What has he done to this end? Not a thing.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats protect their own at all cost.
