Despite Critics, Glenn Beck Has A Dream, Too

It's already been dubbed Beckapalooza, the Beckoning, Beckstock.

Somewhere between heartfelt sermon and star-spangled sideshow, Fox News host Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" event, to be held today at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial, has already attracted outsized praise and criticism. A celebration of faith, personal virtue and traditional American values, the gathering will feature prayers and a speech by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as Old Glory rolls in the summer breeze and folks get in touch with their inner patriot.

"It's going to be overwhelming," Mr. Beck predicted on his show Thursday evening.

But the political aftershocks of the gathering are proving harder to gauge.

Mr. Beck insists the three-hour gathering will not be a political rally, a "tea party" celebration or even a vehicle for personal aggrandizement. But defining what it is has proved to be an irresistible challenge for supporters and skeptics alike.

Organized with the Special Operations Warrior Foundation more than eight months ago, the gathering will unfold on the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have A Dream" speech, virtually on the same spot where the civil rights leader stood in 1963, shaping his destiny as well as the nation's. Mr. Beck said the coincidence was not planned.

  2. We arrived at N. C. Metro station at 8:45 a.m. The station was overwelmed with people waiting in line as far back as the parking lot for the Metro went. The wait time just to get inside the station to purchase riding passes was two and a half hours. We got back to our car and came back home. Dissapointing for us but the turn out appears to be huge! Let's see how the news media tries to down play this one.

  4. to 10:54, no; not about making money. it's about restoring our nation to its roots. honoring God and calling on Him; the author and finisher of our faith, to help us do what is right, before God and man. this is also being hosted by The Special Operations Warrior Foundation. glenn asked that we pray (faith). tell the truth; look for truth and challenge yourself to be a truth teller (hope) and know what you believe; question with boldness. have firm reliance on what you believe. search these things out for yourself. storms will come up in your life. what who will you call on?

  8. 1:36

And your problem with white people is?????

Are whites not allowed to gather and praise God now? Pay honor to the US soldier?

The doors are always open to persons of other races but when they do and join the cause they are insulted and called "Uncle Tom, race traitor, etc."

I don't blame other races for being scared to attend.

  9. Tell me 1:36, exactly how are white people being racist in participating in this rally? When are you going to stop playing the race card?

  10. Anonymous 136,

My dear ignorant friend. When will the "liberal left" and the very few minorities stop clinging to the idea of inequality? Why try and keep the idea alive? We have a true "African American" and a black first lady (only by title) in the White House. The truth of the matter is the white American population is more often than not overlooked for government and other employment, due to unconstitutional regulations giving a different ethnicity an unfair advantage, no matter who is more capable for the position. Martin Luther King did not see color, race, or creed....So why do you? He saw equal rights for all Americans. His message has been perverted by true racists and the "liberal left" to give the conservative Americans an illegitimate black eye, and to keep the liberals in power by manipulating these minority voters. They want to keep the minorities thinking they are continually being wronged. The truth is all races of Americans are tired of hearing the same old "It’s not fair, I’m still being oppressed". It does not matter what you have been given, but what you do with what you are given.

  11. I am amazed that the criticscry "making money" on this event. After paying the expenses for the event, EVERY dime is going to the Wounded Warrior organization. How anybody can find fault with that is beyond me.

  12. Obama still has an 90 % approval rating from blacks ! Who are Racist's ?

  13. Blacks vote democrat...WHY?.We have had this little social program for almost 100 years and spent trillions and some people just don't get it. The democrats started the KKK and voted against Civil rights and have destroyed the black family through their policies. Yet they continue to enjoy the support of blacks. I am back at my hotel room after the rally and it was a rally about god and country. It was a rally about americans. Why are all the haters against that message? THe proceeds go to SOWF which puts kids of KIA special forces through college. Is that unamerican? Do I give my money and ask that it be ear marked for a certain ethnic group. How absurd. I am american and any person who did not attend for some dumb political reason should be ashamed of themselves. Additionally if Al Sharpton wanted to earn my respect, he would have marched down to join Glenn so that we may someday arrive at a point that would make MLK proud. As long as the rallies are seperate, so are we.

  14. 2:23,2:28, and 2:57

Calm down. Take a deep breath. Relax......

What 1:36 said was simply a joke. Nobody has a problem with white people. Nobody is playing the "race card". 2:28 you asked "exactly how are white people being racist". Where in 1:36's comment did you read anything claiming that anyone was being racist in any way whatsoever? It was a simple joke. I'm as white as they come and I laughed at it. You all really need to chill out.

  15. The MSM media using race to keep us all separated into groups so we don't rise up together and restore freedom !

  16. Thank god for people like Beck and his followers. Any race is welcome to join him but unfortunately liberals had rather play the race card with nothing to back it up with. They are desparate now that Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and the other libs have destroyed the democratic party and they have no where else to go.

  21. MSN network, in FIVe different articles keep saying -- expected 100,000 people there. HA, what a lie. tell it over and over, and morons will believe it. My parents were THERE and they said it was from Lincoln all the way down the reflecting pool and into the woods on both sides and back to the Washington Monument and farther!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My mother said it reminded her of the scene from Forest Gump, kinda funny, but the turn out was HUGE!

  22. The comments here demonstrate how the left is playing the race card at every possible opportunity-- trying to inject race into things that have absolutely nothing to do with race.
And we frequently 'bite' on their bait and go defensive, which is exactly what we're supposed to do.
Anyone with any sense at all knows that this event had nothing to do with race, and it had nothing to do with the fact that MLK's speech was given there on this date.
Even Al Sharpton knows that-- he's just trying to stir things up-- race-baiting.
    Just say no.
Sensible people know that race has almost no role in the current election debate, either. It's all about the (incredibly stupid and irresponsible) policies that are destroying our country, and most of those came from a white Italian woman in the House of Representatives with a macabre fantasy of a socialist utopia.

  23. Be carefull, The Obama internet trolls are out in force today trying to make people think that there is ANYONE who likes what this idiot President has done to this country.
Beck speaks for all those "silent majority" that have had enough of the liberal degradation of this exceptional country.
Beck and the rest of us are fully awake now. The battle to take the country back may be long, but we will prevail!

  24. Rob,

Sorry. I did not think I over reacted. It’s not like "Conservative America" is not being attacked for beliefs that Obama is ruining our country. You are right, we the worker bees are not allowed to be offended or react, but it seems we get the third degree continuously for not supporting the social machine. Oh and by the way, I thought I relayed my thoughts very politely.

  25. Ok zealots....we came to this land to escape RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. Now Beck says if we are not religious in his chosen way, we are evil. We are FREE AMERICANS. That is all that matters. Our relationship with our Creator is personal. Otherwise, you are all just little Ayatollas with a different leader.

  26. Rob S.:

Perhaps you might enlighten me as to what is so funny? I think the fact that the people who attended this event were predominately white speaks volumes about race relations in this Country.

I don't understand why a gathering like this one, where all the proceeds were to be donated to wounded soldiers; Why in the world ALL Americans could not just go and unite behind the message that was being portrayed ? The message was completely positive and spiritual in nature.. A message of personal responsibility and responsibility to one's self and a belief in God. "Ask not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for your Country." That kind of message.

What is says to me is that Black America is so, so uncomfortable with Middle White America that they won't even join us in an effort to get people, all people (White, Black, Red, Brown, Yellow) to stop relying on the Government and start relying on themselves and on God once again.

IMHO Black America missed a great opportunity to actually meet White America and help pull this Country back on her feet. Or, maybe don't want to.
    And that is sad.

So I'll ask again Rob, what is so funny?

  27. 1:36 right on, funny. I wonder how many of them screamed: "Get your government hands off my medicare".

Good job Glenn Beck, you know how to make money.

  29. My family and I just arrived home from the Restoring Honor rally. It was an amazing day. It was about prayer, it was about bringing God back into our lives, and into our country.
I was saddened to read, in coverage from the Washington Post, that the rally held by "Reverend" Al Sharpton seemed to concentrate more on race then on hope. The consensus was, and I paraphrase here, that Beck's rally was for the purpose of white people "taking America back" from african-americans. I can only speak for myself and my family, but I say nothing could be further from the truth.
As for the comment made at 7:07 regarding Glenn Beck being able to make money? You are so very right. The man is a capitalist, and he's good at it. The money he raised today, after paying an extravagant amount to put this together, went to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. $5.5 million dollars, to be used to make sure that the child of any Special Ops soldier killed in battle will be guaranteed a four-year college education. It's a promise these brave men make to each other, to care for each others' families should they not make it home.
Glenn Beck and all of our donations today just helped them keep their promise.

My husband was there with family members. He used the same Forest Gump example when trying to explain it to me. They got there pretty early and it was still packed. They had a hard time hearing what was being said. They said it was a wonderful day. Everyone was very nice.

I was watching Cspan as everyone was leaving. Did anyone else notice how there was hardly ANY litter left on the ground? Remember how bad it looked after Obama's inauguration?

Yes Glenn made alot of money today. It was all DONATED to another organization. You live in that area why didn't you go there.

I did notice there were several black speakers and singers today. I also notice there didn't seem to be ANY WHITE included in the events with Al Sharpton. Remind me again who is racist?

  34. Did anyone else get chills when they began to play Amazing Grace on the bag pipes and the crowd started to sing before the actual singers did?
