Animal's owner, Sam Mazzola, has checkered past on animal rights issues
COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio — A bear whose owner was a target of animal rights protesters for staging bear wrestling shows mauled its caretaker to death, authorities said Friday.
24-year-old Brent Kandra, of Elyria, died Friday morning at MetroHealth Medical Center, the coroner's office in Cleveland said. He had been taken by medical helicopter after the Thursday evening attack in Columbia Township southwest of Cleveland.
An investigator in Ohio said the bear attacked while the caretaker and owner fed the animal.
Capt. James Drozdowski of the Lorain County Sheriff's Office said Friday that the bear was out of its cage at the time of the attack. He said that's not unusual and it's not clear why the animal became aggressive.
Deputies who responded said the bear was contained in its cage without further problems. A rescue squad took the bear's owner, Sam Mazzola, from the scene Thursday with an unspecified medical problem.

When will we learn , bears belong in the wild , they are wild animals. They are not dogs or cats , they are wild. They don't belong in cages or zoos , they are not pets.
ReplyDeleteIt's not clear why the animal became aggresive!? I'll tell you why it became aggresive because it's a F****** BEAR! People!
ReplyDeletehey....sometimes YOU get the bear...sometimes the bears gets you...sorry that a man has died, but wild animals are NOT for "shows" and 'tricks". Same thing can be said for killer whales, alligators, elephants, etc...sometimes they just get fed up with the "trick pony" deal and get some payback...notice the article says the bear got back in his cage without further ado (after he evened the score)...
ReplyDeleteIt is sad what people put animals through for their own greed!!!! Animals such as this were never ment to be captive for our pleasure. I refuse to attend the circus or any other displays of animals out of their natural environment! I wish more people would listen-----there need to be laws to prevent this inhumane cruelty!
ReplyDeleteI dont know if I would be considered "normal" or not, but I would not ever ever ever have a pet bear, tiger, lion, etc. Why would you want one when they can easily turn on you and eat your face off ?
ReplyDeleteI wonder when people will learn that even if wild animals are sometimes docile when raised in captivity, they are just that, WILD animals. How many people are going to have to die before they realize that these animals belong in nature and not the topic of some 20 year social experiment or wearing a silly hat in the circus?
ReplyDelete"Dang... he always makes me lose these wrestling matches... always making me look bad and him good... he says that's how we get food... just ONCE I'd like to show 'em I can win one of these fights... Grrrrr....!"
