Rare Photo Of Slave Children Found

Accompanying document details sale of one child for $1,150

RALEIGH, N.C.
- A haunting 150-year-old photo found in a North Carolina attic shows a young black child named John, barefoot and wearing ragged clothes, perched on a barrel next to another unidentified young boy.

Art historians believe it's an extremely rare Civil War-era photograph of children who were either slaves at the time or recently emancipated.

The photo, which may have been taken in the early 1860s, was a testament to a dark part of American history, said Will Stapp, a photographic historian and founding curator of the National Portrait Gallery's photographs department at the Smithsonian Institution.

  3. Bought them from their own people? Are you stupid?

Slaves were forcibly taken and children forcibly taken from mothers.

This is a piece of history. No one asked your ignorant self to apologize.

Some of you crazies just have to find something to give you an excuse to say something stupid and hateful.

  4. 7:53 Check your history. Yes, over in Africa they sold their people to white merchants for slavery.

We were wrong - they were wrong.

  5. A small amount of Africans sold other Africans. Very small amounts. Using that as an excuse is completely off base. This picture, as the information explains is of a boy being sold HERE. 1:02's comments ar both offensive and uniformed, Ridiculous

  7. This was started by our so-called Founding Fathers. They were British and French Freemasons.

Their descendents run our lives today.

Most of us earn enough money to pay for: Rent, utilities, and food.

Many of us use credit to finance the remainder of our lifestyles. We are slaves to the international bankers. The international bankers are the descendents of our Founding Fathers.

    Thank you

  9. I have been doing genealogy for over 10 years and I haven't found one ancestor of mine who owned a slave, not one!!

I don't owe anyone an apology what others did 300 years ago. Niether does any American today for that matter.

  10. remember, slavery was not limited to africans. many people have been slaves over the years. the romans took slaves from all over the known world, the egyptians had slaves from where ever they went.
it was a way of life at one point in history, but this does not excuse it.
what we must do is learn from our mistakes so we dont repeat them.
