GOOD THING TO KNOW:
New Law: If a patrol car is pulled over to the side of the road, you have to change to the next lane (away from the stopped vehicle) or slow down by 20 mph. Every state except Hawaii, Maryland and D.C. has this law.
A friend's son got a ticket for this recently. A police car (turned out it was 2 police cars) was on the side of the road giving a ticket to someone else. He slowed down to pass but did not move into the other lane. The second police car immediately pulled him over and gave him a ticket. He had never heard of the law. It is a fairly new law that states if any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are able (be sure and look to make sure no one is passing on the left), you
are to move into the far lane.
The cost of the ticket was $754, with 3 points on your license and a mandatory court appearance. Please let everyone you know that drives about this new law. It is true, see details at the following web address: http://www.moveoveramerica.com
Traffic tickets are nothing more than another tax !
ReplyDeletepersonally, I agree with this new law. I've always gotten over for cops that have someone pulled over, same as I always pulled to the side to let any firetruck/ambulance through. I've seen way to many videos of dumbass drivers barreling into stopped patrol cars/pulled over vehicles.
ReplyDeleteThis could be a very subjective ticket. It is possible on a two lane roadway that it is not possible to get in the other lane. Also, you are technically violating the law if you pass on a double yellow line. I have also noticed that officers should use a little more discretion about where they pull a vehicle over, and get them off the mainline to write the ticket. There is no reason they can't pull to a side road or into a parking lot. If they have this rule for officers, they should also have it for roadworkers since I would wager to guess that just as many if not more are mowed down every year by motorists, and they can't control where they have to work
ReplyDeletethe officer said "if you cant....just slow down...it's the law"
ReplyDeleteThe officers car in this video is clear creating a traffic/safety hazard, it's funny that the other car clearly conscience of the hazard pulls clear of the traffic lanes. The officer belligerently and defiantly could care less....over a simple traffic citation he risk everyone safety including his own.....
I have done this for 15 years, never knew it was a law but it certainly is safer and courteous. I support it!
ReplyDeleteCops are just another special privilege group.
ReplyDeleteThis country is being divided into factions that will only start fighting between themselves soon.
5:22.... how does a cop pull a car over in "the right place"? The car being pulled over typically pulls to the side of the road and the cop follows suit behind that car.
ReplyDeletenot in MD according to the link
ReplyDelete5:59, the cop can tell the car to pull off on the next road. I have seen it done. No sense causing a wreck over a speeding ticket, or clogging up rush hour traffic. I am not disagreeing that people should excersise caution, i am just saying that the ticket could be very subjective.
ReplyDelete5:43, you stink. Cops get killed on the highway during routine traffic stops under the best of conditions by drivers who are too freakin' stupid to move over.
ReplyDeleteThe lights are bright as hell and you can see them a mile or more away.
Get the hell over, save a cop's life and STFU.
I've always thought it was stupid that Maryland didn't have this law.
The Public does not need yet another law. They simply need education. I know, some Marylanders are really slow with being educated but that is what the Democratic party there has attracted to the State.
ReplyDeleteMaryland did pass this law this year, it goes into effect 10/01/10.
ReplyDelete543, please post your name so I can give YOU some special privilege.
ReplyDelete7:03 U stink do the cops think about the people that slow down then get into an accident because they are distracted by the police lights and cause numerous accidents, if they want to pull people over, pull them over in the Off ramp at the next exit instead af putting them selfs and others in danger at the SIDE of the the hwy but since joe loves cops he wont POST this.
ReplyDeleteThis "new law" is simply common sense. We must give the road to emergency vehicles and the police.......I agree MOVE OVER AMERICA
ReplyDeleteI sure wish folks would move over for the guy who is towing cars on the side of the road.
ReplyDeleteCops don't cause accidents. Idiots with no common sense, courtesy, or respect do.
ReplyDeleteIts really a shame that this needs to be a law. Only if people would use common courtesy this wouldn't be required. I have always moved over to the next lane.
Couldn't care less about the cops welfare.
ReplyDeleteGet a decent job.
Stop being a tax collector.
Stop acting like you are better than everyone else
They should triple the fine if they have to pull you over for this and you were on your phone!!!
ReplyDeleteOne commenter said exactly what I was thinking, you can see those lights from far, far away, so GET OVER!
Same thing with lane closures, people know the lane is closed ahead, they read the same sign I did but they'll wait until they come right at the end of the closed lane and then expect people like me to let them in. I will not! You want courtesy? Drive with courtesy first!
i have always done this, law or no. Motorists should provide courtesy & safety for any law enforcement officers stopped on our roads. They face danger enough when they have to exit their patrol cars for any reason. Be aware, people. help them do their job. You never know when you may need one of them. And as for the comments of 5:43, you probably pee in yer cornflakes in the morning, and then wonder why it tastes bad. Idiot. It's like anything else. There are good and bad everywhere. Don't punish the good officers because of a few bad ones. I know quite a few of the law enforcement people here, and am proud to say they are damned good ones. Now go eat yer cornflakes. Hope they taste better now that maybe you realized ya pissed in them.
ReplyDeleteThis personally seems like a stupid law. My daily commute is on a 2 lane highway which both cars and semis use. So you would have all the cars in one lane going 25. It would triple the time or more given the traffic jam it will cause. And where I live most of the cars that stay in the far lane closest to the cops are people exiting, the elderly, and kids learning to drive. Personally when I was learning to drive I was to scared to keep switching lanes and as my family gets older I see my parent like to take the slow lane as well. I feel like this law will do more harm then good.
ReplyDeleteLaw are created for our own good and for our own benefit. It promotes safety and organized roads. This will help to prevent vehicular accidents.
