Answering The Welfare System

Joe,

What can we do about people who abuse the welfare system? I know of a single mom (dad is in jail) who has 3 kids (ages 5, 4, 2) who does not work, state pays for her daycare (why the heck she needs daycare if she doesn't work is beyond me), and she sits home (or goes to the beach) all day and still is able to collect a check.

I'm sick of it! my husband and I are small business owners in Salisbury. We bust our you-know-what everyday, trying to make ends meet and could probably qualify for some sort of assistance from the state but we wouldn't dare even apply. I know that she isn't making any effort whatsoever to find employment (why would she?) and it makes me sick!

I'm all for people being able to get assistance when/if they need it, but abusing the system with no intentions of fixing it is rediculous. Her 5 year old actually told his daycare mother the other day "my mommy doesn't have to work because she still gets a check each month and the only reason you (daycare mother) has to work is because you're older" - so now this child is growing up to think its ok to mooch? UGH!

Signed,
Frustrated & Broke (but full of integrity)

I feel the very same frustration that you do. Want to get more frustrated? Try to get someone in the government to do something about it. It will be like trying to get them to seal the border with mexico. Instead the morons in Washington are suing Arizona.

  4. anonymous 8:34, who cares. JT is a lot of fake names on the Blogs. Mainly, he was the author of many of the few comments he used to get on his Blog before he shut it down for the 50th time.

    Forget about him.

  7. Just remember at 16 you can go out and get pregnant, never think about marrying the father and you are set for life. Just make sure you have a couple more kids along the way. You'll never have to work and all your basic needs will be taken care of -- housing, food and medical care. I sometimes wonder why I've been working for 45 years. What do I have that they don't? I sure don't have any money; have stressed over paying bills; spend many sleepless nights wondering how I will make it while the abusers have fun.

  8. You have respect for yourself, something a lot of people dont even care about. When you look in your mirror do you feel proud? Thats one of your rewards.

  10. I think the greater majority of self respecting working individuals feel the same way. The system is broken and has been since the 1970's when the welfare reform began. Sadly the government caters to the unwilling to support themselves and leaves the rest of us who try to make a decent life in the cold.

The welfare system should be to assist people who are trying, not to provide everything for those who feel others should bare their burdens.

  11. I too am a business owner and I work 60 plus hours a week to survive and just yesterday I was at Walmart and the gal in front of me whips out her independence card. She had FOUR little kids plus looked like one on the way - just how do you think that makes me feel??
Her order had everything in it that you could imagine!
I am a single mother who raised a child basically on my own with VERY little help from the so called Father and survived with no Food Stamps, Independence cards, free health care coming my way, Dont you just love it!!!!

  14. Yeah, like the other night in Sams' and two perfectly capable young welfare recipients with two kids in tow, were shopping in those motorized shopping carts! I would have said something, but I was afraid to be called racist. That kind of stuff burns me up.

  15. You're looking at about the 4th generation of welfare "leeches". They little ones are taught early how to work the system so they don't have to work.

And what is the first thing the politicos want to cut in hard times? Education! Don't touch welfare, they are votes that are bought and paid for with your tax dollars.

And you think this is bad? Wait for amnesty for illegals, that will buy enough additional votes to destroy the USofA.

  16. This sucks, obviously, and something should be done about it, but I think you also need to understand that people like this will never know or feel the satisfaction that comes with creating a life based on integrity and hard work. For me, that is priceless.

Yes, flush out all those abusing the system and cut them off. But don't demonize everyone who receives assistance because of a few bad apples.

  20. Every one who gets foodstamps, medical assistance etc doesn't mean they are not hI my self actually work for wicomico county FULL TIME for several years and have always worked since I was 16. However my job does not pay much at all! People at Mcdonalds make more than my self. I go to work everyday and I am a very hard worker, My hole check goes to rent utilities car payment etc. with not much money if any left over to buy food for my 2 kids. Alot of you people assume that the person in line in front of you using her foodstamp card just sit home all day and do nothing. STOP assuming I could be a harder worker than you are!!

  21. 1:48....where's the father of your two kids?? Are you receiving any state benefits, since your income is so low, such as rent subsidies, food or medical subsidies? How about SSI for you children??? Get any of THAT? Any child support payments?? Who pays for your daycare while you work that low paying job? Have you tried to get a job at Mcdonald's to INCREASE your pay? Sounds like you have a "foodstamp card", but complain you don't have any money left over for food? Which is it? I must also (reluctantly) agree with the post for 8:40 --- not the best quote about "the fruits of one's labor" when the labor you are referring to was done by SOMEONE ELSE under the threat of death...

My kids FATHER for your information plays A huge role in my kids life. BEING that food stamps is the only state help that I do receive THEIR FATHER helps with clothing pays DAYCARE for both children and pays for their health insurance. No we are not on any subsidized housing. I pay full amount for my rent. And also for you info the amount of food stamps that I get is only enough to last me about two weeks and I still have to pay out of pocket for food the rest of the month!!! SO please once again do not assume that the person in line in front of you using their food stamp card does not work and is mooching off all the benefits of the state. For I am sure you have either a daughter sister niece cousin etc that is receiving some sort of assistance through the state!!!!!

  23. Its only going to get worse.I just love it when I see someone whip a SNAP card out of a Bourke & Dooney or Coach pocketbook too....
The welfare state has demolished the family unit for whites and blacks.Girls dont bother marrying anymore because they can get so many goodies if they are single on paper.Oh,they are seldom single, most of them have boyfriends in their subsidized rentals illegally, but they clean up at tax time too by not being married. Its a broken system that is meant to help but is hurting family values.

  24. I am a single mother and I work full time. I also receive food stamps and medical assitance. I work at a job where I can buy medical insurance and I do. I use the insurance I pay for as a primary and medicaid as secondary. Not everyone who uses state assistance is lazy and doesn't work. My childrens' father is currently ordered to pay support but doesn't. My mother (who is able to stay at home because my stepfather has a large enough salary) takes care of my kids so I don't have to get state assistance for daycare. I don't receive subsidized rent. I pinch pennies to pay lot rent and a mobile home payment every month. The tax returns I receive every year go to pay car insurance for the year and owards paying off my home and car early. I'm currently attending night classes to be able to get a degree and a better job that comes with it so I won't have to use state assistance. So the next time you see a woman with four small children take our her foodstamp card it may be me! There should absolutely be something done about "welfare leeches" but not every person with foodstamp card is such!!

  25. If some of those lazy people at Wicomico County Child support would get off their butts and do their jobs just maybe my children's support would supplement some of the medical assistance and foodstamps that I receive. Thats right. They advertise all that they do as a state agency because they have to. Once you get there they do absolutely nothing. It is then beyond their control. You people over there get paid so try doing your jobs and you will have less welfare. I am a single parent, was married but did not forsee my husband leaving the home. Yes, I needed the help with assistance. I appreciate it and don't abuse it.

  26. No offense to any of the single mothers who replied, but what exactly posesses some of you to have so many children, without a husband/father in the home? How fair is that to those of us who stopped at ONE child because we wanted that one child to have a bette life than we did and we knew thats all the family we could afford to have?

I am 1:48am And I have two kids By the same father!! So if you are suggesting that since you only have one child you are better than anyone else. And by the way have you ever took the time to use ur brain and think that maybe at the time I had my two kids I possibly had a good paying job but with the economy the way it is and all the layoffs my income has been reduced by such!!! Now making it harder for me to afford the things that I once could afford when I had my 46,000 year job!!!! PLEASE take the time to think!!!

  28. 8:16 - I am 1:04. I had all of my children while I was married and we were both working and we had a combined income of around $80,000/yr. Now I am single with a yearly income of $26,000 - $30,000 depending on what overtime I can get. I could afford 4 kids when I had them.
