States receiving federal grants provided for in the bill would be required to annually track the Body Mass Index of all children ages 2 through 18. The grant-receiving states would be required to mandate that all health care providers in the state determine the Body Mass Index of all their patients in the 2-to-18 age bracket and then report that information to the state government. The state government, in turn, would be required to report the information to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for analysis.
The Healthy Choices Act--introduced by Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee--would establish and fund a wide range of programs and regulations aimed at reducing obesity rates by such means as putting nutritional labels on the front of food products, subsidizing businesses that provide fresh fruits and vegetables, and collecting BMI measurements of patients and counseling those that are overweight or obese.
Section 101 of the bill amends the Public Health Services Act by stating that health care providers must record the Body Mass Index of all children ages 2 through 18. "The provision relates to all children in states that accept grants under the bill," a spokesperson for Rep. Kind told CNSNews.com. "However, it is important to note that no one is forced to come in for a doctor’s visit to get their BMI tested. BMI will be taken at times when the child makes an otherwise scheduled doctor’s visit."
We are not Free.
ReplyDeleteBut we are Fat.
ReplyDeleteGood idea. People are eating themselves to death. They should tax fatty food and sugar the same way they tax cigarettes and alcohol.
ReplyDeleteUse that money for preventive health care.
if taxpayers are expected to foot the bill for healtcare, then I agree! There is ample evidence based research to substantiate the relationship between basic fitness and medical costs. Yes, DNA affords an uncontrollable element, but smoking, drinking, and overweight all have direct causal links to illness and thus medical costs.
ReplyDeleteAlex if I wan't that jelly donut I will have that Jelly donut. Just another liberal trying to find something else to tax. I guess if you have a large kid Social Services will be at your house also. Alex I guess you don't like FREEDOM do you.
ReplyDeletehow about policing the fat content of the police?
ReplyDeleteA joke people...
how dare these liberal swine weigh my child and calculate his bmi! This is pure socialism. I mean really. If I want my child to become morbidly obese with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease by the time he/she is 18 well than that is my right. And don't tell me that my sick child should be covered by any government insurance when he/she is 20+ years old and can't work due to obesity related illness.
ReplyDeleteReally people, get a grip. Doctors weigh your kid at every healthy visit/physical. The BMI is just a number related to height and weight.
Have a jelly donut tedh, and when you get diabetes or heart desease, iw will be liberal like me who will pay for your healthcare.
ReplyDeleteNow, I am all for taxpayer funded health care. I believe that it's a basic human right. However, I also believe that people should eat healthy and practice preventive medicine.
How is your jelly donut is different from cigarettes or beer.
What do social services have to do with fat kids? Be a good and active parent and you won't have fat kids.
Wait, I thought we lived in America, not China...What's next, regulating how much coffee we drink like China does?
ReplyDeleteAlex if you knew my family or me you would know better. (Doug you can chime in) My point is I have rights and they are being walked all over now as it is. What this is doing is FORCING us to what the government wants us to do and that is simply too much control. The real problem here is that it is cheaper to buy processed foods than to buy healthy fresh foods. What you are suggesting is yes we have the rights but the government is going to tax us to the point where we can't afford them. Trust me where it stated above "Health and Human Services" is the same Department as Social Services.
ReplyDeleteDoctors do record weight and height now, but they are not forced to send that info to the government.
ReplyDeleteWhy is this ok, but we can't test for illegal drug use at well checks? Or how about school nurses do random urine testing along with BMI calculations for all secondary students (middle school and up?
If you think the jelly donut is as bad as a beer, treat them the same, and test for drug and alcolol use along with fat!
How about they just tax snacks and use that money to incentize fresh veggie & fruit companies to get into poor neighboorhoods?
ReplyDeletethe date thng is kinda creepy.
Not gonna fix typos. Keys stick.
So we can check people to see if they are fat but not check them to see if they are illegal?
ReplyDeleteWhat is crazy is that so many people are ok with this. How much more intrusive can you be? Soon they will be collecting DNA at birth to keep on file in a data base. We will soon implode as a free nation. How crazy is this. Give me liberty or give me death!
