Nearly two years after asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect of a brutal rape, Ocean City Police detectives have solved the case thanks to DNA evidence. The attack, which took place on May 24, 2008 at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the area of 113 49th Street, left police with little evidence and few witnesses.
After continuously pursuing leads regarding the assault, detectives learned last week that the FBI Laboratory’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) had positively matched the DNA recovered from the rape with a man convicted of burglary in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. OCPD Detectives traveled to Florida to interview the suspect,
Lorenzo Ivan Garcia-Moreno, 23, who is currently being held in a Florida State Prison.
On May 12, 2010, Ocean City Police charged Garcia-Moreno for the May 2008 rape. In addition to 1st and 2nd Degree Rape, Garcia- Moreno is being charged with Attempted 1st Degree Rape, Attempted 2nd Degree Rape, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault,
1st Degree Sex Offense, 2nd Degree Sex Offense, 3rd Degree Sex Offense, 4th Degree Sex Offense, Kidnapping and Reckless Endangerment.
Garcia-Moreno is currently being held in Florida. Anyone with further information regarding the attack is asked to contact the Ocean City Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 410-723-6604 or Detective Corporal Shawn Jones at 410-723-6661.
