Deanna Williams Of Bennett Middle School Named Best-Mannered Teacher Winner
A reading and language arts teacher from Bennett Middle School, Deanna Williams received the first award for the best-mannered teacher given by the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions Friday night.
The winner was announced by Ann Wiseman, director of the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions. All candidates for the award were nominated by students in the cotillion class as best exemplifying the etiquette and manners that they were learning in their local cotillion classes every month. Jared Ramses nominated the winning teacher and he presented her with the award at the conclusion of the Eastern Shore Chapter’s Spring Ball.
The other finalists for the award were Ronald Dyda and Rebekah Badaki, both of Salisbury Middle School; and Debbie Traum of St. Frances de Sales School. The winner was announced at the Eastern Shore Chapter’s Grand Spring Ball in front of the cotillion students, Dr. John Frederickson, the Wicomico County superintendent of schools, and the other finalists and their school officials.
Ann Wiseman, director of the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions, said, “The students in our program were excited about being part of the selection process. They wanted to honor teachers who exemplify the etiquette and manners being taught in our program.”
The teachers were nominated by Eastern Shore Chapter Junior Cotillion students who wrote an essay about a teacher in their school. The criteria for selection included their positive characteristics, how the teacher shows courtesy and respect for students, and why the person is a good role model.
The National League of Junior Cotillions is an etiquette and social dance training program that involves thousands of young people nationwide. Students learn the customs and courtesies that will serve them for a lifetime. Topics covered include table manners, writing thank notes, and responding to formal invitations, in addition to many other social skills, including the basics of ballroom dancing, that will make life more pleasant for them and for those around them. Most importantly, the students learn to feel comfortable in social situations.
