See The Spill From Space

The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is being tracked from outer space, where the sea's ugly slick takes on a strange kind of beauty.

Ever since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded on April 20, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been analyzing satellite imagery to help figure out how far the spill has spread, and where it's likely to go next. The best projections suggest that oil will reach the Mississippi River delta as early as tonight. For the latest from NOAA, check out the agency's Incident News Web site, which includes maps of the oil spill's "footprint."

You'll also want to keep track of the U.S. Coast Guard's Joint Information Center on the Web.
NASA provided this April 25 picture of the slick, as seen by the Aqua satellite's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer, or MODIS:

  1. This is a true catrastrophe to the fragile ecosystem along the Gulf Coast. It will take MANY years for this area to recover from this spill.

The sad thing is that there are devices available to prevent this kind of thing from happening, but they are not required by law, so the oil companies will not spend the money for them. Other countries require them so why don't we?

I hope that these devices are required before drilling begins along the east coast, or we could be faced with the same problems.

  2. Hold on folks , you had better beieve gas prices will SOAR after this mess . Might get close to $5.00. Somebody is going to pay for this disaster, and it ain't going to be the oil companies.

  3. I wonder if Palin is still yelling "drill baby drill?" These problems could be eliminated if we severed our dependence on oil.

  4. Hey 2:39-How in the hell are we going to eliminate our dependance on oil? Wind power? That's just a scheme to send billions to the company that builds the turbines-guess who. Nuclear? The environmentalist wackos won't allow that. There is plenty of natural gas and oil right under our feet but guess who won't allow us to drill there-the liberals appeasing the environtmentalist wackos. Do you think the oil companies choose to build these terribly expensive offshore rigs? This would not have happened if the environmentalist wackos would allow us to drill on land. That's who's fault it is. Another thought to ponder-what would the left and the state run media be saying is George Bush had sat back for seven days and waited for the slick to hit shore? Our worthless leaders response was to send justice department lawyers. What an incompetent imbesol we have for a commander in chief. I would like to say he is a joke, but it isn't funny-it's pathetic.
