Wicomico County Road Conditions As Of This Morning

"We struggled last night after we heard Wicomico Cty’s decision on having buses run and school in session. I have attached a few pictures I took this morning of the road conditions in our area. Although there may be clear spots on parts of the roads pictured, there are still large portions that are very dangerous for anyone – especially a bus full of children! Our daughter is home with a high-school student in our neighborhood today. It’s just not worth the risk. And……it’s snowing pretty good out there right now!"

  3. Give me a break! Yes, there are some roads that could have been cleared better, but it was time for the kids to go back to school!

  4. Just so you know, busses can refuse to travel down any road they deem impassable or dangerous- so if you don't see your bus this is why.

  5. Why have I not seen a snow plow in a few days? Are they on vacation or what? They need to get these roads cleared to get our children back in school, they can't learn sitting at home.

  6. The street outside of Pinehurst Elem was very icy today at 10:30. I can't imagine how kids can get safely into school once they are on a bus with the roads outside of a school so horrible. Furthermore, there are many walkers to Pinehurst. The majority of the sidewalks in the neighborhood have not been cleared. If state testing weren't coming up so soon I think that the kids would likely have spent another day or two at home until the sidewalks and roads were in better condition. The safety of children MUST come before test scores! Joe, I have a suggestion for a thread...dangerous conditions witnessed/injuries today in children's efforts to get to school. Lets make a list for Fredrickson to review!

  7. Curious....so, if a bus decides not to go down a certain road they feel is impassable, and the kids are outside waiting...they are just left behind, not informed and not picked up to go to school?

  8. 1118 I don't know the protocols but would presume it's an on the spot decision not to travel a particular road, so I would say no phone call or notification.

  9. Duh...if the bus doesn't show up, there's no school for you. Let's see...that would make you absent, vs school closed. Now you have two choices: find your own way to school, or stay home. Now if you are a kid that has a lot of absences anyway, who cares? If the student is a conscientious attendee, then they should find another way to school. They can't just close the schools all winter because it snows. They go to school in Frostburg when it snows, and they go to school in Wisconsin, when it snows. What's become of us, when we think the schools should be closed because a FEW backroads remain hard to keep open due to blowing winds? Crybabies!!!

Well, they COULD learn, sitting at home. But obviously, many do not learn anything good, sitting at home. Otherwise, there won't be so much trouble with many of the kids at school. Notice, I didn't say ALL of the kids, so don't get your panties in a knot.

  11. @9:35 Really? So the schools should open at the sacrafice of a few accidents? So why arent you out there picking up the kids that were left behind today and taking them to school. But obviously with your logic, 1 + 3 = 9. So maybe its you that needs to worry about getting back to school.

  13. 12:37- The fact of the matter is most families have both parents working to make ends meet, so where do their children go while they are at work? Most of them daycare or family. Most daycares I know of do not provide any education, therefore they are not learning. By the way I am more a boxer guy...
