Today's Survey Question

Do You Think We Should Consolidate To A County Wide Police Force?

44 comments:

  1. Absolutely! Mike Lewis is the man to run this and not only would it be more effective...it would save everyone money in the long run. Things seem to have improved since Webster stepped away and this should be viewed as the beginning of a new era.

  2. In my opinion, COUNTY WIDE EVERYTHING. That's the direction
some cities are taking to reduce their deficit. Look at Louisville Kentucky as an example.

  3. I would be in favor of it IF Mike Lewis was at the helm!

  4. Leaders are the largest factor in
success. Given the reputation of Mr. Lewis it would be a wise decision to go county wide with him at the top.YES!

  5. Yes! Get rid of all town charters and have county take over all.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes! Have each dept (area) still have it's head person (chief) yet everyone belongs to the same force, everyone works together.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes, with an elected Chief's position.

  8. Keep all police forces in tact just put all of them under the County Sheriff, Mike Lewis. Fruitland, Delmar and Salisbury Chiefs would report directly to Lewis. This would allow Lewis the ability to pull all resources together at the needs of the county!

  9. On the fence about this. Mike Lewis is great at his job but thier is only so much one man can take on .

  10. Resources come together now if needed and it doesn't cost a dime. Teamwork is what is needed not consolidation. It seems we have that now that Webster is gone.

  11. NO , i live in county why should i pay for city of salisbury problems?

    ReplyDelete
  12. WE can do anything if we so choose, however it will never happen becasue it should happen and it would be financially stable and you would have great leaders and officers because Mike L. would make sure of it...

I think we should consolidate, our forces becasue the process of communication would be better transmitted to the officers...

  13. I think we have all the cooperation framework we need with the WBI. The rest of the small towns would suffer as Salisbury would draw all the resources and attention.

  14. It is obvious that you all have no clue about the Sheriff's power. The Sheriff is the highest law enforcement official in this county. Sheriff Lewis has the power to stop all police work in this county, until he has approved the action. The only thing a county police force would do is eliminate duplicate services which would save tax payers some money.

  15. I think we will be ok now, if Mayor Ireton appoints Ivan Barkley as the permanent chief of police for Salisbury. I have seen and heard about the great amount of teamwork among the different law enforcement depts since he has taken over the helm. I also agree with 9:48 about the cooperation framework within the WBI is already in place.

  16. Yes. It makes sense on many levels, even without the dysfunctional nature of the city force. BTW we live in the county.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Even if they did this, how could it possibly happen. The Sheriffs dept makes atleast 10K more than city and Fruitland, City has LEOPS, county does not. There are things like pay and benefits that would have to be worked out. City woul dbe dumb to give up Leops and county would be dumb to get a decrease in pay! It would never work for those reasons alone!

  18. yes, only if Sheriff Mike Lewis is in charge. Greatest sheriff in the country.

  19. i think we need a big tree limb and some rope and start using it.
start with to 2 news making sex offenders

  20. Son, it sounds like most people in the county respect Mike Lewis. Has anyone asked him, the professional, what would be best for the county? Would he support consolidation?

    ReplyDelete
  21. you people are idiots. consolidate to save money? county makes more than city, when you consolidate, are you gonna bump up the salaries of all the old city/new county? county has take home cars, are you gonna buy all the old city/new county officers take home cars? city has LEOPS retirement, are you gonna pay to buy all the old county ofcs into the new retirement? city has better healthcare, you gonna pay for new healthcare for the county people? here are some other costs:
new uniforms for all those transfered in
reband the radio system into one system.
consolidate the computer system and records into one system

and how is this gonna help? it isn't going to add any more police officers to what the entire county alreay has. it is going to spread what the city has over the county. The city officers also signed on to work under a chief of police. they did not sign on to work at the will of the sheriff.

  22. I agree with 10:45am. How ever I also think the leaders we have NOW at the State Police Barracks, Sherrifs Dept. and Salisbury Police are able to take care of us and work together. I look for good thinkgs to happen to SPD with thier new leader.

You idiot you are already paying for it. And guess what? The residents of the city of Salisbury are already paying for the county police force and they are not receiving the benefits.

  25. Everyone knows Barkley as a good guy, The Barkely you dont know is acting cheif. It is getting worst here. The 3rd floor is making some bad calls and he is not doing anything to help HIS officers. We though he was going to put a foot down on the curruption and the silly IA's but no. They are still coming in and good officers are getting a bad deal. The rate its going now, we will lose more veteran officers. The CPT and the MJR are really kicking us in the balls. Joe, nothing has changed. Disciplinary action that will be taken if we dont get our 8 and 10 per month.

You moron, it's not his decision. That decision belongs to us. The professional citizens, the voters.

  27. anonymous 12:42, now you're the Idiot. If you believe you're not getting the services of the Sheriff's Department within the City of Salisbury, you're nuts. Sounds like a Lynn Cathcart statement to me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. anonymous 12:44, Barkley is the intrum Police Chief.

Do you really think he's going to be able to turn 10+ years of BS around overnight?

Mind you, right now Barkley answers to the Mayor, unlike the former Police Chief who knew nothing about respecting his boss.

Ireton is making the decisions around that Police Department right now and until they make Barkley the formal Police Chief, he's not going to buck the Mayor.

In the mean time, deal with it.

  29. Yes, and as for the first commentor, it would not be four Police Departments, it would be consolidated into ONE...other than the State Police

    ReplyDelete
  30. No, they each have different laws to uphold and they can barely keep it straight now. They all seem to be on the right track. leave them alone.

    12:46 PM

Joe you don't get the point. The Sheriff's Office is not giving the city of Salisbury the day to day services that they are paying for. Quit attacking the people that support you.

  32. it works in other countys

    ReplyDelete
  33. 12:44, sounds like you are one of the problems that is being delt with, seems to me Barkley is doing just fine!

  34. Fruitland will never fall under the Sheriff's Office like Salisbury they are an incorp. city. I would love to to talk to Mike he is in Carolina teaching again.

My vote is no. The truth will be coming out soon enough

  35. 1:14pm: Do city residents attend the circuit court in Wicomico County as either witnesses, defendents or victims? YES (Wico provides the security there)

Do city residents have papers served on them every day? YES (done by the Sheriff's Office)

Do city residents have circuit court warrants served on them everyday? YES (only done by Sheriff's Office)

Do you really believe that Deputies from the Sheriff's Office don't drive through the city and observe crimes or traffic violations and take action on them?

Now if you want to say that you are paying for County Plows to obviously not plow the city streets because they certainly aren't plowing the county roads then I'll somewhat buy your gripe... but do you ONLY travel on city streets and state and US hwys? I doubt it VERY seriously... Do your kids play in rec leagues at the county facilities? If you have them I bet they do...

Just saying get off the Tax Diff kick...

And about the survery I vote No (though it don't matter cause I don't live in SBY or Wico...

But a question to ponder: Why is Salisbury going to sink money into their fading radio system when Wicomico has a system that the City could jump onto for minimal cost? Don't care that the money they are sinking into it right now is grant money, but at some point they are going to have to replace their aging system... Why replace it? Abandon it instead and go online with the county...

  36. Look moron 5:01 PM. If you live in the city and you have an emergency where you dial 911 do you think a WCSO deputy is going to respond? No! so give it a break Mr. No it All.

  37. NO COUNTY CANT PAY THEIR BILLS NOW AND FURLOWED DEPUTIES RETIERMENTS ANR different, pay is different it just wont work

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, we would be a much safer community with a consolidated police force.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 738 PM the county can't pay their bills now because idiots like you elected Rick Pollitt and the majority of the County Council allowing them to spend out of control. Next time vote conservative.

By the way consolidation of a countywide police force would save thousands of dollars in the long run. It is not a quick fix today but a move in the right direction for the long term. Do it now.
