Very Sad For Wicomico County

I think it is very sad that when our Civic Center in Wicomico County is suffering badly in need of repairs and the State of Maryland has chosen to "give" Ocean City a very large sum of grant money to enlarge their Civic Center stating it will bring in more tourists for motel rooms (help the room tax for the State) and Ocean City will be able to bring in larger exhibits for the public. If a hurricane should come to Ocean City, they would probably NOT even be able to use it for shelter as everyone would be sent out of he city and towards Salisbury who has an inadequate Civic Center for the most part. The only good thing to happen to the Wicomico Civic Center in recent years is they did get money for a kitchen so they can feed a couple of thousand people should an emergency arise. Where were our officials when the state was handing out money? Who is in charge of grants? I guess the County Council was bickering amongst themselves I dare say, or trying to line their own pockets. We have been passed by again and again and yet again. Who is looking out for us? We too need to clean house at our county level. Maybe someone "in the know", not hear say, can respond to this post.

  2. You can only get grant money by asking and applying for it. It seems to me that somebody in Wicomico County is not doing their job to earn the big paycheck they are receiving!
A head or heads should be rolling. Perfect opportunity to CLEAN HOUSE!
I'm so sick of government employees getting high pay and fantastic health/dental plans to NOT do their jobs! This crap needs to stop!!
And before one of you government employees try and come back and say you aren't paid well or you don't have fantastic benefits, please don't even bother. I know for FACT what you have!!

  3. Where is Norm Conway when we need him?

  4. If you can't understand why Worcester and OC get more from the State coffers than Wicomico and Salisbarrie, you're a helpless case.

Baltimorons don't vacation here, do they?

  5. I'll tell you where Norm is. He's sitting with Governor O'Malley and Thomas Leggs patting Thomas on the back and telling him, don't worry Son, everything is going to be OK!

  6. Ocean City is a destination and as such can bring in conventions, large events, etc., that Salisbury will never be able to draw. I think investing in the Ocean City Convention Center is a wise decision.

Wicomico County holds a few successful events --BBQ, wine tasting--but these events have nothing to do with the Civic Center. The only multi-day, really big event the Civic Center hosts is the dog show. And those folks stay in their trailers in the parking lot, so no draw to the hotels there.

  7. It's part of the O'malley reelection campaign, just like the money he's giving to Pollitt to buy more land for the Civic Center in Salisbury -- both are a huge waste of tax dollars.

  8. How about we build us some toll booths on the route to the beach.

  9. You sure about that one???

  12. I'm really tired of people thinking state grant money is "free money" It's OUR TAXES!!

The state is 2 Billion in the hole, they need not to be handing out "free money" until they can clean up their act. Instead, they cut our local county funds that are supposed to be returned to the county....

O'Malley stop playing games with our money!

  13. Where was Pollitt and Mackes when they were handing out this money. Don't they know how to appply for Grants? They were notified. As one who has been in a position of requesting Grants, I know they were notified by mail and emailed. This is incompentancy at its best. Mackes and his staff is totally inept if they knew about grants but didn't apply or just don'tknow about applying for Grants. How can you get money just to spend by not for a project to improve income to the County? Rick Pollitt has lost my confidence in leadership for the last time with this type of total incompetent request for this money for parking for a failing facility.

  14. Every area in the county is responsible for their own grant opportunities. The County once had a position in the budget for a person to go out and search for grants for the county. That position was filled, but the person that took the position chose to leave the position after a few months. The position remained open in the budget for a few years but was never made a priority to be filled. It was used more less as a budget cushion.

  15. you want to know soemthign about your "wycc"....
they over charge and extort every group that tries to hold thier events there...

This year after many years AMSA will also be takign thier money elsewhere. The AMSA show was for many years the WYCC largest draw and Biggest convention of softs for the entire year. The AMSA sportsmen expo will be held at winterplace park in tents. They are tierd of being priced right out of the venue... Every year in the past few years the event became smaller and smaller due to the rise in costs. the club could not hold and keep charging vendors more and more every year. something had to be done. Everyone wants to complain about how AMSA was making the show smaller and smaller each year. Well its not the clubs faught,, it was the WYCC that keeps killing everyone with outragous prices and no help in making things bigger and better. This years show will be bigger and more exiting with more outside events and vendors. Along with tents that will house smaller vendors.

THe WYCC is just running themselves right out of business

  16. OCEAN cITY deserved it imho.
Have you heard anything good about smallsberrie lately except for the police agencies working together?

It is a shame, but that is the way it is. For the most part, the majority of our city council is pathetic as well. Salisbury is a laughing stock and the butt of jokes.

  17. Isn't the OC Convention Ctr. fund by the Maryland Stadium Authority, just like Camden Yards and the Ravens Stadium? WYCC has never had a slice of that pie, and I am sure they never will. They just don't generate enough revenue for the State to be in with the elite.

Joe, I don't get you comment about Norm Conway and Leggs, is he not in favor of the maximum penalty for him?

  18. anonymous 11:44, Absolutely Not! That is, until we put all that pressure on him and he knew he was toast for creating the current legislation. Mind you, think about this for a minute. Leggs should have been in JAIL and this murder would have never happened. Especially after he was caught masterbating over a woman's bed while she was asleep in Ocean City. Let alone the charges against him from his ex wife and his own daughter!

Leggs was alking the streets after being caught multiple times, even in Delaware.

Norm Conway helped draft the current legislation and now his tail is between his legs because it's an election year. Norm also stands with O'Malley wanting to repeal the death penalty. Look up his voting record and sex offender laws and you'll see I'm right.

It's time for some new representation here on the Shore, the kind that fits our wants and needs, not just party line democratic liberal values.

  19. Norm who? Oh yea, that fat rich guy nobody can get on the phone. Talk about useless, Whew.

  20. Joe you're right, it's time for new representation and people need to remember that when going to the polls to vote. I believe there should be term limits on all politicians.

  21. I dont think the OC center money came from a state grant. It is money from bonds that only purpose was to go back into the OC Convention cenetr,

  22. 10:15am - You are going to have a hard time putting toll booths on the route to the beach. Don't think Rt. 50 is a county road.

  23. Do we know that Wicomcico did not apply for this grant or that an assumption by everyone here?? Even if they did apply for the grant that doens't guarantee we're going to get it. Besides, the one person below made a great comment, the majority vote comes from the Western Shore and they don't vacation in Salisbury.

I"m all in favor of frying Leggs for what he did, but for those that talk about state funding, the reality is it cost $1,000,000 to execute someone. We can all complain about this process and how rediculous it is but its the reality, and there's no use in saying what we should do and put him at the center of town square and stone him becuase its not a reality. I say spend the $1M to exucute him but remember that $1,000,000 is coming away from something else.

And just because we may not agree with Conway's position on everything lets not forget the millions and millions that he's brought to the Eastern Shore as chairman of the appropriations committee. You can't just vote him out and replace his position as chairman with someone else form the E.S. I don't know who would be next in line for that seat but it most likely won't be someone from the E.S. and if that happens kiss all the future millions Norm could bring to us good bye. By the way, I'm a registered republican but can still can see the value of having Norm, a democrat from the E.S. as chairman of the appropriations committee. Lets not be short sighted just because you don't agree with all of his positions because once his seat is replaced you'll then be complaining about all the money the E.S. loses.
