  10. Deale Island, not deal island.

    ReplyDelete
  11. actually...it is Deal Island.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes, it IS Deal Island (no E)....and it's WenoNa.

I have heard that he had been drinking prior to taking the boat out. And yes, the sound is frozen in certain parts, but not in entirity, including Wenona where his boat was taken out of.

  13. To the person that wrote "Why... Why would anyone take a chance and go out in that mess". Everyone has an opinion and that is the great thing about a sites like this. However, negativity is not needed. It's just like a person getting on an ATV, do you think that person that enjoys the ride would have gotten on if he knew it was going to flip over and crush his legs so he could never walk again? Or the person that gets into a car and kisses their loved ones before leaving....then has a head-on collision 2 miles away... Don't you think that person would have done things differently if they could have? Getting on an airplane for a vacation....... There is ALWAYS a chance that something can happen to you no matter what you do....

I know this gentleman and I can tell you he had a GREAT love of fishing, he knew how to swim, he did take a chance in the cold but he never would have gone out if he thought he would lose everything. He was successful in business, he has a lovely wife which is his high school sweetheart, two beautiful children, most of all Brian is just a GREAT guy. The search was resumed this morning and I ask that you all pray... No more negativity to anymore situations like this... it helps nobody. Thanks for your time.

  14. 9:12, while it is dangerous, and all Waterman (and their loved ones)face this same fear everyday, reguardless of the temp., we always pray they come home to us safely each day. For most of them, this is their life, it's all they know, and it's how they pay their bills and care for their families year round. We still have to feed our family & if we don't pay our bills, no one is going to for us. It is a given risk they choose to take when they pick their career and/or hobby. I pray for Brian & his family, as well as the searchers and continue to pray for all of the hard working waterman as they go to work each day.

  15. His name is Brian Wagner he has a lovely wife and children who are completely heartbroken at this moment. Please, please do not start speculative rumors that will harm this family.Instead let us put our energies into praying that his wife & kids can somehow get thru this tragedy.

  16. He had NOT been drinking.... Again negativaty and assumption. Choppy, bitter cold temps.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 9:52 X 2 THANK YOU...I am with you ... take the negativity somewhere else...people sure are heartless and ready to throw stones any chance they get, pretty obvious that nothing bad has ever happened to you or ones close to you. God bless the family.

    ReplyDelete
  18. In addition to Brian and his family; Please add the many searchers to your prayer list. I just got off the phone with one the searchers..... conditions are not good... bitter cold and alot of ice. 10:15 am 1/5/10.

Please bring this young man home to his family.

  19. People can be so UGLY. All I will say to that is you really need to get a life. And as others said, let's not focus on the coulda, shoulda, wouldas and focus on praying for a family that has just endured a terrible tragedy.

With all that Salisbury has been thru please stop with the negative remarks and let's pull together as a community.

Unfortunately you will always have idiots that are miserable and want to share their misery but let's not stoop! Let's just band together and pray that this family will have some sort of closure.

I think if I am not mistaken, Brian Wagner owned Chesapeake Golf for years. If this is the same guy, Most of you are right. He is a great guy and has always been accomodating at his store and would do anything for you. When Dick's came to town it was difficult for him to compete so he closed it and began doing fishing charters. I saw him in Gander Mountain a few months ago and he still had that smile and loved doing these charters. If this is him, my heart really hurts today, because he is a great human being..If we had more Brian Wagners, we sould be doing just fine. Hit em long and straight.

  22. Very best of luck you guys. May God watch over your efforts.

  23. I have known Brian since we were kids. We graduated together. He had a great wife and 2 children who were in very close age to my daughter. I would cross paths with him frequently while out, and was always impressed by what a great father he was. He was the kind of father that a father should be. His children were always with him. They were very well behaved and polite. He was a genuine person who always looked on the bright side. I am deeply saddened for the family and can't imagine what they are going through. Please everyone, keep this family in your prayers.

  28. Sorry guys not a comercial fisherman. So yes why would he go out in this. No where near the same as the plane crash or hit head on. God gave us common sense and we just do not use it enough.

This is a very sad situation for the family. No matter why or what made go out alone at that hour.

Pleasure boat not a working boat. ???? I do get this one at all.

God Bless this family at a time when they need it the most.

As for anyone thinking that a negative comment is wrong this is a blog and it may just be someone trying to understand something they just can not wrap their mind around.

  29. all of the good things that you all have said are very true.the boat is here in the wenona harbor tied up.saddly only brian is still missing. but there are alot of his friends waiting for the tide to rise some so that we can all get some boats out searching for him.we will find him i would really love to see the comunity pull together like salisbury did and all pitch in and help.i know i will,i wasnt able to get up to salisbury to help search for little sarah but my little brother did and he has been up since early this morning raring to go.Joe could you please encourage people to try and help do anything that they can for brian just as they did for sarah i would appreciate it he is just about the nicest guy ive ever meet. thank you to all that help!! joe holland

  30. He charters the boat for a living. He was moving it to another location with the co-owner of the boat from what I understand.
What difference does it make anyway why he was out?
A wife is without a husband and 2 kids are without their dad, and we ponder why he was out there?
You're missing the forest for the trees 12:45.
He was a hell of a good guy, and my prayers go out to his family.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 12:54 Seriously get a F***ing life it is not your place to judge or figure out why this happened. As for you thinking it is any less tragic than a plane crash or a head on car crash well it is just as important there are two children who will not see there dad again and a greiving wife who will need to hold her self together for those children. you are an Ass why can't people like you just wish the family well and not make any other comment.I hope that nothing like this happens to your family because then you will see that in a time like this a family doesnt need to see comments like " I cant believe he did something so stupid like this" or Why he did it . He made a mistake he did it and now his family needs our prayers.

    A freind

  32. Yes it was a pleasure boat, but his business was chartering fishing parties. The boat was his livelihood and given the nasty weather , we were told he was attempting to move it to safer mooring. It is natural to wonder, as details are not available at this point. But consider what his family must be wondering and how speculations & rumors cause damage at a time like this.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wrap your mind around this......
Very simple, it does not matter why or how and NOBODY will EVER be able to understand this.

Just let it go!!!----- There are so many family members grieving right now & I am one of MANY... All I asked is to leave the negativity somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 12:54...I think he had been hired to transport the boat. He was trying to make a living in a tough business.

  35. God Bless Brian and the man that tried to save him.

The man who went with him was a commercial fisherman who has worked on the water his entire life. He knows the water in this area like the back of his hand. The water ways were not terribly frozen and Brian had a fiberglass boat, which could handle the conditions well. They left earlier than the papers are saying as it was still day light. Please dont jump to conclusions if you dont know what you are talking about. Both of these men knew what they were doing and were being safe.

God bless Brain as he was a good friend and a true joy to hang out with. God bless the man who tried his hardest to save his dear friend. Please do not make this harder for the family and friends left behind or the man who tried desperately to save Brian.

  40. Well I do know a few real fishermen who would enter some pretty risky climates. Their passion for the ocean and bay does not hold them back from the fear of what the potential of mother natures capability.

Pretty risky but they would not have it any other way.

I pray for him and his family that he is retrieved okay.

  41. As someone who goes out in that particular area pretty regularly, the last time on dec. 27th. I can tell you it is not an area to be trifled with even in good weather. Life is such a precious thing. It is very unfortunate what happened to this young man! May God bless and watch over his family! All are in our prayers! several years ago I had a very young friend die, a wonderful person, and i couldn't understand it. Why the best always seem to be taken before their time. And yet the worst human beings seem to live forever. fortunately a good friend explained it to me, He said if you were God who would you pick!

  43. In Loving Memory Of Captain Brian Wagner Crossing The Bar Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar when I put to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep Too full for sound and foam. When that, which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark: For though from out our borne of time and place - The flood may bear me far - I hope to see my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar! This poem is for my fellow Captain and Great Friend,Brian Wagner and his Family and Friends, from deep down in my heart Stevie Benton

He was a good capt who was called to the lord way before his time. Who knows why..and why is there not an update anywhere on the net about search efforts. I get off at 4 and will be down there to get atleast 1/2 hour of daylight to continue the search. Is the ice too thick? Have boats been going out all day..these are things I need to know. 58. I hope this one is published on your Blog!

Because this is about Brian, his family, and the captain who failed in his desperate attempt to save his friend,I will skip any other part of my resent attempts to post my concerns and apprecaition.

First, to the family of Capt. Brian Wagner, I offer my deepest sympathy, and pray for a speedy recovery of your loved one, thus allowing you and Brian's many friends to have so small measure of closure in this sad tragedy.

Secondly, To offer my sincere thanks to our communities who have rallied once again in their support in every possible way to bring some measure of comfort to the many individuals who have joined in the search for the missing captian. To Arby and his
family for keeping the store opened late at night, and the coffee flowing. To Luckys,
it's owner Dave and his wonderful staff for providing hot meals for tired searchers.

I wish to personally thank The DNR, USCG, MSP Trooper 4 and the local Fire and Rescue Companies for their tireless efforts in both Search Rescue and now Search and Recovery.

My Special Thanks to Capt. Donald Ford and his able crew for making it possible for me to locate and board the stricken vessel off Wenona. For Donald's seamanship, courage and compassion for a father who feared for his own son's life, knowing Danny would do whatever it took to get Brian back on board the vessel.

Thank you Joe, for allowing a Retired MSP Chaplain and Minister of 40 years, as well as Lifetime Member of Co.4 -2nd, District Rescue Squad, Prince Frederick, Md.
to assure Brian's family, of both my continued prayers, and support to their family in any way we can.

Thanks also for the kind expressions for love and concern for my son Danny, through your Blog. For this I will forever be grateful

    Chaplain Sonny Benton (Retired MSP)

  59. Several years ago another tragic accident happened in our lovely community of Wenona. My three sons became involved in the search and rescue efforts until the last body was recovered. I continued the search every day the weather conditions would allow me to go out in the boat. The one day I was across the bay and unable to search, both the MSP and DNR contacted me with the news that Eric, the last of the three young men had just been found. You guessed it..Cor.Shores DNR told me that my son Stev had located the body and Danny was standing by in his commercial work boat along with my other son Andrew.

I can assure Brian's Dear Wife and Children and every member of his family, as we promised the families of the three duck hunters, we also promise you "we will continue to seach for Brian, and never give up until he has been recovered and returned to you." By God's Will and His Great Love and Mercy this too will happen!

Stev and Andrew, along with my daughter Debbie (RN) has already joined me in this search effort. When Danny has fully recovered from the shock of his failed attempt to save his friend inspite of his best efforts, he too will be a part of the search team.

For anyone who would be able to help in this search, there is about a seven mile stretch of shoreline with many roads leading close to the shore. Arby's and Luckys (Dave) will keep their doors open and heat on for the search party. Please join me and many of the captains..(personal friends of this good man, Brian) and start the search efforts with coffee, 6:AM (Arbys Store..Wenona) and a prayer that this will be the day we bring our friend home.

    Thanks and God Bless
    Sonny B

    PS Thanks again Joe..

  61. thank you for your thoughtfull well spoken words Mr Benton. I will be down this morning hopefully around 11 am and would like to get on a boat and assist

    ReplyDelete
  62. First let me say "Thank You", to the men and women who have not given up their efforts in the recovery of Brian. For those of you who answered my Dad's plea to help in the search, "Thank You". To the Deal Island Chance Fire Deparment, who were the first to respond on the scene, "Thank You".

It is not my desire to speak anything but comfort to the family and friends of Brian, but the following I now have to make known.

I can not believe that as many DNR officers that there are in Maryland that they do not have any boats trying to recover Brian, including the Coast Guard, in the last 48 hours. Atleast 10 officers on Deal Island today, in 3 different trucks and unmarked cars and not one can find the time or energy to try and recover Brian. Sitting on the Shoreline, and sitting in your trucks talking IS NOT helping us. The helicopter comes down a couple minutes, flies over, does not even hover, and then leaves.
They say the weather is too bad to do it, but I have seen men with their personal boats, and hunting boats twice as small as a Coast Guard or DNR boat that are doing everything than can to search. They say there is too much ice, how come everyone else seems to get out? There is actually a path cut right thru the ice going out the harbor. Can't you also follow that? You tell us your boat is broke down so you can not search. Sorry, but the state has enough boats on this bay that you can pull them up on your trailers and bring them down, but not one has been seen.
On Wednesday the wind was blowing twice as hard, and I sat and watch Brian's friends leaving the harbor out on their search why the DNR sat on the shoreline. It is an embarassment and it just makes no sense to me and others that you don't hesitate to go out in this weather, wind and cold to board a boat in hopes of finding an illegal oyster or someone dredging over the line. But you can not get out there and help this hurting family and community.
The wind today was 10 knots or less and 40 degrees and the DNR and Coast Guard still made no attempts. The temperature is now dropping, and a chance of snow so I guess that will be the excuse tommorrow.
A few waterman have personally showed the DNR exactly where it happened and exactly where they think the recovery should be made, taking into consideration the wind and currents. These are men and women that live and breathe these waters every day of their lives. Why aren't you listening to them? Why is the helicopter flying fast over the spot that was told to you?
Come on guys, for this hurting wife, children, family, community and for Brian's friends, STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND HELP US !!!

We will be walking the shorelines again starting tommorrow morning, regardless of weather conditions, and boats will be leaving the harbor again. Won't you please join our efforts?

To his wife, children, family, and friends. . . regardless of what the DNR and Coastguard do, rest assure the many friends and fellow Captains on this island will not stop looking.

    Deborah Benton

  63. I walked the shore of "heart break",
    the cold beneath my feet.

    The winds sting my face
the tears freeze on my cheek.

    Looking up towards the heavens
    I just asked "Why?"

    Needing to know the answer
    to ease this pain inside.

    I waited for the answer
by the blue, white and sand.

    Looking across the waters
    just trying to understand.

    Minutes turned to hours
the sun set on this day

But I never heard the answer
as I went on my way.

I will be standing here tomorrow
    "I won't be alone"

    Walking that shore "of heartbreak"
    till this Captain returns home.

Written from the heart of Captain Stevie Benton

  64. Stev..I can feel your pain, and I too will be walking this shoreline early in the morning. While I do not fully understand Rom.8:28 I do know that the love and compassion you have in your heart for The Brian Wagner Family, and for your brother Danny is what I believe being A True Christian is all about. Along with Andrew, Debbie and your mom ,as well as Danny's two children, we will in some way be able to ease the pain in the hearts of all who knew and loved this good man, especially his
    wife, children and family.

  65. I am so glad to have found this blog, as I have searched for any bit of news at all everyday since this happened.

Brian and my son, Jerry P. have been best of friends for many years. Brian has been helping Jerry with repairs to an old house that Jerry recently bought over the last month, and I had also been there painting and cleaning.

He was the most genuine person you would ever want to meet. A great dad who drove his kids to and from school everyday, and one of those who attends anything and everything their kids are involved in. Always smiling, that is how I want to remember him.

God bless all that have helped in the search for Brian. God bless Danny. I can't imagine how hard this is for him, but I am so thankful that he was with him, otherwise we might not have any idea what had happened.

I pray God will be with all that continue to search, and be with Brian's family as they struggle to cope with his loss.

  66. I just would like to say that I have to agree with DEb B. I too live in Wenona and feel the DNR and Coast Guard are not doing enough (if hardly anything) to help in the search for this fine gentleman. The night that this terrible accident happened I was the one who heard Danny B. so desperately calling for help after Brian fell off the boat, I called 911 and talked to the coast guard after i realized I was the only one hearing him. I rode up and down for the 2 hours following that call and I saw the state police helicopter flying over and watched the valiant efforts of the Deal Island fire dept as they were determined to get out of Wenona harbor to go out to where the boat was.I did see one dnr guy sitting in his truck on the Deal Island dock talking on his cell phone but never saw a coast guard boat or DNR boat ever leave either harbor. My heart goes out to this mans family, I did not know him personally but have heard nothing but great things about him. I also know that danny B. did everything he could that evening and is a good captain and also a good friend of mine. I just hope that Brians body is found soon, so his family can have closure. To all involved in this search please no that God has a special place for all of you.

  68. i am just now hearing about this very sad situation. to brians family , i have no idea what to say ...

and if i could muster something , it would not ease your pain any . i am sad for you and terribly sorry for this sad , sad day . to brians daughters , i dont know if your even old enough to read this , as i cant find any details but i feel motivated to share my thoughts .

i didnt know your dad but by the way all these great people are talking he must have been the best dad in the world .
just try to imagine what your dad would say to you if he had ten minutes more , make him proud with what you do in life , be happy for the time you did have with him and of course always think of those fun and happy times . im sure he would want you to be strong right now , well , as strong as you could be anyway . mom is gonna need some extra TLC for a while just as you will also , so stick close to her .

  71. Update on Brian's family:
I spent the weekend with my niece and her family. The love and support from Brian and Nicole's family and friends is amazing. Nicole is being surrounded by her dear friends who have seamlessly taken control for her. My sister and her husband are there for her 24/7 to help. Jack and Joe, Brian's father and mother are touched by the outpouring of love for their son.
Between Brian and Nicole's friends and my sister and her husband's friends, the Wagner home has been continuously filled with love, food and wonderfully stories of Brian and how he touched their lives.
So far, I think Brian has 37 best guy friends. If you think about it, that's pretty amazing. Men are not known for having best friends especially when they're in their 30's or 40's. Brian's father calls Brian his best friend. Harry,Brian's father-in-law, calls Brian his best friend. His next door neighbor, Dennis who is 40 plus calls Brian his best friend. I haven't mentioned all of his other buddies who say the same thing. If you can have both your fathers, respected neighbors and families in the community feels this way about you - what more needs to be said?
Even though I'm sad as we all are for Nicole and the children with the lose of their father/husband, my heart is filled with joy by the love that I was blessed to share with everyone this weekend.
The search for Brian continues. A ship with sonar will be arriving today. On Tuesday they will be searching the area with the sonar to locate and recover Brian.
Please continue to pray for a speedy recovery of Brian's body and for all of his family and friends whose lives are now changed forever by the lose of Brian and his larger than live personality.
Signed: One of the lucky ones to be in Brian's life.
    Love, Nicole's Aunt Kathy

  72. I was so touched by the poem that Stevie wrote, that I have taken it and some pictures of Brian and his boat and made a nice memorial plaque.

I gave one to my son, Jerry Pietroski, and if there are any of you that want one too, please let me know. I just felt I wanted to do something to help.

Stevie, I hope you don't mind me printing your poem, and I have told Jerry to take a plaque to you!

I can be reached at 302-462-6018 or email me at jdaras05@comcast.net

I hope tomorrow's search will bring some much needed closure to all Brian's friends and family.

You are all in my prayers daily,

    Becky (Turkington) West

  74. For the family of Brian Wagner. While weather conditions in our area are difficult, and the ice flow will not allow DNR and other boats to go out on the water, yet as promised, along with my sons,
daughter and grandchildren, I will continue walking the shoreline every morning and evening for as long as it takes to bring your loved one home. My thoughts and prayers are with you . and for all who are touched by this tragedy.
My prayer for the family is that just knowing that someone is searcing every day will bring some measure of comfort to your hurting hearts!

  75. To Miss Becky I think that is a very nice thing to do and I will be contacting you to get one to put in my dads store.Brian did alot of business here with my dad and i know he will be sadly missed.if he came down to get fuel for his boat when we were closed we would always open for him, ofcourse we had to harass him about it since he had such a great sense of humor.Thats just one of the things that will always stick with me in my memory of Brian the list ofcourse could go on and on and on,but i deffinatly would like a plaque to display here in the store so thank you Miss Becky.

  76. Joe,

I would be happy to make one for your dad's store. If you know of anyone else that wants one, please let me know, and I will get them ready and ride down one day this week and bring them.

I am so happy to be able to do something to help remember him.

The weather is supposed to be a bit warmer over the next few days, so I am praying they will get that boat with the sonar out there and locate him.

    God bless,

    Becky (Turkington) West

  82. Praise be to God Almighty, who has today answered all our prayers for Brian's return.

It was sad for all of us who stood at the harbor waiting for his body to be brought ashore, but at the same time, comforting to listen to the many stories being told there. All were in agreement of how much Brian touched our lives for the better.

I pray that God will continue to bless all the folks who have worked so hard to see this through. I know Brian's spirit will be with each and everyone that leaves out of that harbor.

I delivered the plaques that I made in Brian's memory to those that had requested them, but I am still more than happy to make more for anyone that would like one.

Again, my cell phone is 302-462-6018, and my email is

    God bless,

  84. One year today since Brian left us. There hasn't been a day gone by that I haven't thought about him and his family. I keep his picture and poem by my desk. We miss his bright smile and just the wonderful person he was.
