Brown Touts 'Big-Tent' Outlook
Massachusetts' U.S. Sen.-elect Scott Brown said Wednesday he believes in a "big-tent philosophy" for the Republican Party and said that his election, powered by a populist surge of independent voters, signals the arrival of a "new breed of Republican" on Capitol Hill.
"I have been asked many times what kind of Republican I'm going to be, and I really didn't know how to answer that. So I'd just said I'm going to be a Scott Brown Republican. Maybe there's a new breed of Republican coming to Washington, [someone] who is not beholden to the special interests of the party and who will look just to solve problems," he said.
On the campaign trail, "the No. 1 thing I heard is that people are tired of business as usual" and the "the behind-the-scenes deals," he said.
He grew emotional when he sought to explain what being elected to the Senate means for him, citing his parents' marital struggles, his mother's time on welfare and his own "issues" growing up.
"If you would have told me ... I'd be standing here before you right now and going to Washington, D.C. - are you kidding me?" he said, his eyes looking a bit misty.
"I don't know if you guys understand that. ... I can't tell you how proud I am to be here, standing before you all, and having an opportunity to help send the country in a different and better direction," he said.

The Republicans have a "big tent" for only one week every four years, and that's it. Unless the party is going to publicly acknowledge its homosexual members, the ones who want to keep abortion legal, and those who believe that unending war in Iraq is "bad" then there is no suck thing as a "big tent" GOP.
ReplyDeleteYou know it. Just admit it.
I followed this election for some time. I'm a registered Independent but I was all for this guy. I was all for the seat going Republican just because it needed to after being "locked down" for so long by the Democrats.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I lost a lot of respect for this guy when he pimped out his daughters on national television.
Is this another elected official who is just going to let things slide off their tongue without thinking? Is he going to operate "off the cuff"?
Now I have had questions raised about him so I'll be watching. I really hope and pray that this will be the first in a long time who is serious about doing the job and won't fall prey to the lobbyists and just plain old good ole' boy BS which has consumed Washington for a long time!
Tom Marr just said on his radio show that Sarah Palin was going to appear at a campaign appearance with Andy Harris on the Eastern Shore. Has anyone heard the details?
ReplyDeleteThat would be a huge mistake for Andy. Even hardcore right wing Republicans finally start to realized that Sarah Palin is an idiot.
ReplyDeleteThey've inquired about it but there's been no response as of yet. Right from the horses mouth.
ReplyDeleteAhhh, the attacks on Sarah Palin ring so hollow now. Why don't you Pansy, Liberal, Progressives attack her message instead of attacking her? That's because you can't attack the message of personal liberty, freedom, and responsibility. You wish you could but, then America would truly come out of its slumber and throw you all out! Your days are numbered Progressive/Liberals. You just haven't figured that fact out yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm wary of the 'Big Tent' philosophy, especially because of jerks like 10:14 who try to make it mean 'everybody's welcome'.
ReplyDeleteThere's room for differing views and flexibility within defined limits.
Liberals constantly try to pervert the concept to mean 'we accept all viewpoints'.
We don't.
That's why there are 2+ parties.
If you believe homosexuality and abortion are right, it's the democrat party you're looking for, not the Republican party.
11:10-
ReplyDeleteMake sure the Cheney's get that memo.
"Big Tent" Republican? uh oh, don't let the conservatives hear you say that. That strategy might work in Mass. but it aint gonna cut it with the base around the country.
ReplyDeleteWhat about all the gays and pro choice people who are fiscal conservatives and favor limited government? If your not going to let them in then Republicans become only about social issues. These social issues ahve nothing to do with governing this country, let it go.
ReplyDeleteThanks 11:10 you made my day.
ReplyDeleteObama 2012
11:10 she has no message, that's why she is an idiot.
ReplyDeleteI love when the liberals tell you that "you must have a big tent " which tells me we want the opposite !
ReplyDeleteIt is funny to hear liberals squak about big tent. The republicans can have the big tent. Liberals ask "what about gays and abortion?". What do those have to do with liberty, freedom and personal responsability? I accept that there are people who have different thoughts about different subjects, but to allow a single or even a few items to change who you support is rediculous. Liberals only give lip service to these moral issues. Clinton started don't ask, don't tell. What happened, now it is not good enough. Gays will not be satisfied until everyones sexual lifestyle is public knowledge and celebrated. My opinion is if you want to be gay-fine but I only need to tolerate it, not accept or celebrate it. Just like I don't expect anyone to care what I do in my life. Abortion is a moral issue not political. Any human being knows that it is wrong to kill a child. We go beserk when it happens outside the womb. Why is abortion any different? It boils down to personal responsability. The are consequences for certain behavoirs and they can be seen as good or bad consequences. Why should a woman and man be given a do-over by just vacuming out the problem. Until we start holding ourselves more accountable for our own behavior. We are ok with telling someone if you drink and drive you may kill someone so don't do it. Well I am saying" if you engage in sexual intercourse you might get pregnant, so if you don't want a baby, use a vibrator.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the definition of "Big Tent" means all are welcome that agree with the conservative principles and concepts that promote a free market, low taxation, limited government spending and regulation coupled with strong moral values, then I am all for it.
ReplyDeleteBrown had better realize that he is a manifestation of the TEA Party movement or he could quickly be put on the list of Republican encumbents that will be receiving their political pink slips along with the Democrats.
Surely this fellow is politically astute enough to realize the mood and desires of the American people.
2:57,
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the sexist name things from. Idiot is actually a non-gender specific name calling word. Get a clue.
2:57 I'll bet that your drive a pick up, own a shotgun and that your father and your brother is the same person.
ReplyDeleteAlex:I do drive a truck, I did not have any siblings and I prefer the crossbow for hunting.
ReplyDeleteTell your mom to stop trying to wave me down when I ride through the Church Street area BTW.
Just remember-he is a POLITICIAN!
ReplyDelete6:19 LOL!!
