Man, 92, Wins $1.9 Million Tobacco Judgment In Wife's Death
(CNN) -- A Florida jury awarded a 92-year-old man $1.9 million in compensatory damages for the death of his wife, a former two-pack-a-day Marlboro smoker who started when she was 16 and died in her 70s, attorneys said Thursday.
The jury of five women and one man deliberated for slightly more than a day before deciding on the amount, attorneys for both sides said. The jurors put the total award at $5.3 million but found that Philip Morris USA was only 36.5 percent responsible for the lung cancer that plaintiffs said killed Leon Barbanell's wife.

Salisbury Fire Department At It Again!!!!!!
Some time ago I received the following comment. "Has it got something to do with the all expenses paid $5000 fishing trip a select few of volunteers from station 16 took with your tax dollars?"
Before I posted such a comment I wanted to make sure it was accurate so I sent it on to Mayor Ireton and he immediately started investigating this matter.
While I did come to learn the comment was in fact not accurate, I did find out something in return that bothered me even more.
"Dept fishing trip not paid for with taxpayer money, volunteer funds."
So while people are making donations to the Volunteer Fire Department, Gordo & See chose to use those funds to take a select group of people out on a $5,000.00 Fishing Trip.
Look Folks, this BS needs to end. The leaders of the SFD are so out of control, this is just disgusting! Can you imagine if there was an actual external audit done on this group! I can probably GUESS which people were invited on this $5,000.00 Fishing Trip but I'll leave it open for others to let us know exactly who it was that went.
BAH HUMBUG SALISBURY ZOO!!!!!!
Joe,
I was at the Salisbury Zoo with my children on Saturday a couple weeks ago and in the parking lot was a new local vender called Snowie Bus. Similar to snow cones, but much better, she offered many flavors of snow cones on a hot day. Kids were lined up and very excited. My child and I were lucky enough to get some before the zoo “police” proceeded to not only kick her off the property, but made every child already in line go away without one!
She tried to explain to him that she had permits, but it was not good enough. So ice cream trucks and such can drive around town and park on the street corner, but they cannot park at the Zoo? This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! All we ever hear is how we need to build our community and support local business owners. I guess they just don’t want us to do that if it’s on CITY property?
If you happen to see this little “Snowie Bus”, you should all give it a try. She also does birthday parties, festivals and fund raisers.
Thanks, Joe, for posting this. Maybe this will encourage the Mayor and City of Salisbury to support local business owners a little more.
The owners name is Sherry Gray. Her number is 443-235-1706.
THANKFULLY SALISBURY VOTERS ELECTED CAMPBELL AND IRETON
The proposed relocation of the library and the proposed purchase of the former George L. Ralph property on Lake Street have shown beyond doubt that the best candidates won in both the District 2 and mayoral races. In each matter mentioned above the “3 stooges” majority on the City Council supported ludicrous proposals that now seem unlikely to survive thanks to the mayor’s veto power. Unfortunately for City residents, Comegys, Smith and Shields still control the Council, and their incompetence and arrogance will likely remain on regular display until the City election in 2011.
Imagine what we would surely be facing if Comegys were mayor and his supporter who ran in District 2 had been elected. Relocation of the library to a site that has been described as the “worst possible” by a knowledgeable resident. And purchase of a polluted property without first doing ordinary due diligence under the circumstances.
But, fortunately for us, Mayor Ireton’s veto of such actions cannot be overridden by the stooges alone, and in the matters metioned above it won’t be overridden. That reality will no doubt result in a predictable reaction by each of them. Ms. Shields will attempt by her buffoonish behavior to portray the mayor, Ms. Campbell and Ms. Cohen as racists – as she did during the last Council meeting. Comegys will resort to his standard boorish bluster and bombast, while Louise Smith will continue to glare at Ms. Campbell and Ms. Cohen and try to prevent them from speaking out at meetings by interruption and so forth.
As atrocious as that scenario is, there has been a significant change for the better at Council meetings: Barrie Tilghman is no longer there.
The Missing Hannity Special On Obama That Never Aired, Till Now!
These tell the story of our President!!
I'm glad I finally came across other people who were tuned into Hannity's show, expecting the Obama report, only to see a re-run.
Now who could have possibly had this yanked??
Let me think.......
Here it is the Hannity Special on Obama that was supposed to air for an hour on Sunday night. The Obama Gestapo made them take it off!!!!!!! Here it is to view before they further remove our rights under the first amendment. Should we be afraid of what is happening?? You best believe it!!
Yes, the program was not aired Sunday so it was googled and found the segments had been taken off of the internet as well. Wonder who did this?
Wonder who blocked this?
Is this our NEW Government protecting us?
Here are the 6 segments if they haven't been removed before they get to them.

Senator Ben Cardin Visits Salisbury University Part III
Cardin's Non Town Hall Meeting
If you weren't of the less than one hundred people invited to Grey Shore meeting at Salisbury University with Ben Cardin, you're out of luck. Senator Cardin won't be hosting a health care Town Hall style meeting on the Eastern Shore. He will be in Eastern Europe instead. Cardin is a Commissioner on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (the U.S. Helsinki Commission). When asked, his spokeswoman, Susan, said he already had three town halls in the state. Just not here, on the shore. "Not before Labor Day. It's just impossible due to time constraints. He'll be in Europe."
The tightly controlled event was heavily guard by the Salisbury Police Department. There were no less then 8 uniformed officers at the event. Outside, a group of nearly 50 people held signs in opposition to the health care bill. They opposed the closed door venue and were upset that they were denied access to their representative.
Questions were to be submitted in advance. Memo Diriker, of Salisbury University organized the event back last May and thank goodness he did or we may of not had the chance to hear Cardin's views on health care."I'm not here to sell you on a bill." the senator said. "because we don't have a bill yet." The senator went on to explain we must do something about rising healthcare costs. That 46 million Americans don't have healthcare and he characterized this as uncompensated care. "We pay for it" he said.
The senator said there was a lot of misinformation and ignorance out there. He said the common themes of the health care bills that are currently be circulated are "bringing down the cost of health care" and "prevention and wellness) He said to get the public option one must take care of heart disease, take care of diabetes, obesity and "smoking problems. "When you go to the ER, they can pull up your records." Mr. Cardin insisted he would "not support a bill that's not fully paid for in 10 years." He claimed the bill doesn't cover illegal aliens but would "help anybody that reasonably needs health care".
When people were able to ask questions, the Senator got some push back. One elderly man asked who are those 46 million people without health care? Cardin claimed 300 a day loose their health care in Maryland. He said of the uninsured most of them are young people who decide not to buy health care. The second group are between 50 and 60 years old and don't qualify for Medicaid. When asked about about the health bill being constitutional, Cardin said the constitution gives the legislation body the authority and "we opted for larger government."
Cardin added he wanted the bill to include dental care in this bill as there is no prevision for it currently. He thought he could get that done under the preventive medicine initiative in the National Task Force.
The polite crowd was left hanging as Cardin apologized for being unable to answer everyone's questions and added that he believes in Town Hall Meetings. "This is not a Town Hall, but we will be back on the shore." The senator mentioned he was leaving for Ocean City, to meet the Health Commissioners from the different counties. He also said he hoped to enjoy the beach. He was then escorted out of the back of the building by the boys in blue.
So if you want to catch your representative of the United States Senate, grab your bathing suit and head to the beach.

E-mails From Public Overload Congress Site
WASHINGTON— People are flooding members of Congress with so many e-mails that they are overloading the House of Representatives' primary Web site, http://www.house.gov.
Congressional technicians warned House lawmakers on Thursday that the Web site may be slow or unresponsive because of the large volume of e-mail being sent to members.
The spike in e-mail traffic comes amid boisterous town hall meetings across the country debating President Barack Obama's plan to overhaul the nation's health care system.
A spokesman for the chief administrative officer at the Capitol was not immediately available to comment.

Senator Ben Cardin Visits SU Part II
As you can clearly see, the audience is mainly Seniors, certainly not the kind of crowd that warrants 8 Police Officers. However, you can't be too careful these days, right? I mean, God Forbid "anyone" especially an American Citizen actually challenge Government Officials and abuse their 1st Amendment Rights.
Then again, there were some pretty hostile, (NOT) picketers outside the building a good 100 yards away expressing their 1st Amendment Rights too. I guesstimate about 40 or so picketers.
I think the Press has a lot to do with this, (not to say certain people aren't feeding them) over abundance of Police presence/protection. Citizens are angry, confused, concerned and more importantly, why haven't the CITIZENS been educated first. Before WE can debate weather or not this proposal is any good, where's our 1,000 page document in which we can ALL review very carefully BEFORE it goes to Congress.
Now I'm not saying you can't access it but my concern is, why does Congress think they can just turn our lives upside down and I believe the answer is, because YOU'RE not educated.
I have heard some highly spirited debates on Health Care and quite frankly, some have it right but to be truthful with you, many have it wrong. That is, FOR THE MOMENT.
You see, Americans know what they see today will be a completely different plan tomorrow. Look at Social Security as just one example. Everything the government has touched they screwed up and Americans can't afford trial and error any more.
There are enough great minds out there to deliver a plan that Americans can see and review FIRST before Congress gets a hold of it and then let our Representatives decide by popular demand.
They don't want that because Americans/Voters will then have a strong hold on what the masses really want. If things were done more openly, you wouldn't have a need for PORK.
Anyhow, a strong Police presence was absolutely unnecessary and quite frankly is was a slap in the face IMHO. Let me make this very clear. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with the Police Officers. This is happening everywhere. Congress is just making this out to be a hostile situation using scare tactics and it's wrong. Just my opinion Folks. Still more to come on this meeting.

Survey suggests town-hall protests may be influencing some Americans' views on health reform:
USA Today (8/13, Page) reports that in "unwelcome news for President Obama and Democratic congressional leaders," the "raucous protests at congressional town-hall-style meetings have succeeded in fueling opposition to proposed healthcare bills among some Americans, a USA Today/Gallup Poll finds," especially "among the independents who tend to be at the center of political debates." Specifically, "in a survey of 1,000 adults taken Tuesday, 34 percent say demonstrations at the hometown sessions have made them more sympathetic to the protesters' views; 21 percent say they are less sympathetic"; while "independents by 2-to-1, 35 percent-16 percent, say they are more sympathetic to the protesters now." In any event, "the forums have grabbed public attention: Seven in 10 respondents are following the news closely." Meanwhile, "a study by the non-partisan Pew Research Center concluded that 59 percent of the airtime last week on 13 cable TV and radio talk shows" was "devoted to the healthcare debate."

Obama's 'Green Jobs Czar' Worked With Terror Founder
Van Jones served on board of activist group where ex-Weatherman serves as top director
JERUSALEM – Van Jones, the man appointed as "green jobs czar" to the White House, previously served on the board of an environmental activist group at which a founder of the Weather Underground terrorist organization is a top director.
WND previously reported Jones was as an admitted radical communist and black nationalist leader.
He was appointed to serve as the special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. According to the White House blog, Jones' duties include helping to craft job-generating climate policy and to ensure equal opportunity in the administration's energy proposals.
Jones, formerly a self-described "rowdy black nationalist," boasted in a 2005 interview with the left-leaning East Bay Express that his environmental activism was a means to fight for racial and class "justice."
Jones was president and founder of Green For All, a nonprofit organization that advocates for building a so-called inclusive green economy.
Until recently, Jones was a longtime member of the board of Apollo Alliance, a coalition of labor, business, environmental and community leaders that claims on its website to be "working to catalyze a clean energy revolution that will put millions of Americans to work in a new generation of high-quality, green-collar jobs."

Guitar, Studio Wizard Les Paul Dies At 94
(CNN) -- Les Paul, whose innovations with the electric guitar and studio technology made him one of the most important figures in recorded music, has died, according to a statement from his publicists. Paul was 94.
Paul died in White Plains, New York, from complications of severe pneumonia, according to the statement.
Paul was a guitar and electronics mastermind whose creations -- such as multitrack recording, tape delay and the solid-body guitar that bears his name, the Gibson Les Paul -- helped give rise to modern popular music, including rock 'n' roll. No slouch on the guitar himself, he continued playing at clubs into his 90s despite being hampered by arthritis.
"If you only have two fingers [to work with], you have to think, how will you play that chord?" he told CNN.com in a 2002 phone interview. "So you think of how to replace that chord with several notes, and it gives the illusion of sounding like a chord."

Comment worthy of a post
Shanie always screams racism when her puppet masters advise her to do so. What will Shanie be screaming when the people of the westside are forced from their homes by the votes cast by Shanie? What will the minority sector have to say when Shanie votes the gentry in and her constituents out of homes and jobs? Shanie owes to much to the gentry to vote against them so she votes against her constituents then turns it around and plays the race card. She is so obvious even Mary Ashanti sees through her game plan.
Shanie Shields is not voting in favor of the residents of District 1 or the residents and business owners of the west side. Shanie Shields is voting MINORITIES OUT, GENTRY IN. She is voting to serve those that hold her strings.
Ireton"s Vetoe Sparks Interesting Debate
Is that what honorable government is all about? The proposal sucked and never even made it past Phase I, let alone Phase II. These Council Members should represent the TAXPAYERS as this is what the Citizens voted them into Office for.
Instead, the old Tilghman style of governing is at it again. Mayor Ireton did the right thing. Quit your bellyaching and move on. In fact, GROW UP! We want people in Office representing our best interests, NOT THEIRS! Thank You Jim for making a great move.
Weekly Jobless Claims Rise Unexpectedly
Four-week moving average rises; continuing claims drop sharply
WASHINGTON - The number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week and retail sales disappointed in July. The latest government reports reinforced concerns about how quickly consumers will be able to contribute to a broad economic recovery in the U.S.
"There is really no positive spin to put on these numbers," Jennifer Lee, an economist with BMO Capital Markets, wrote in a research note. "The U.S. consumer remains very weak. The jobs situation, while slowly improving, is still dismal."

Retail Sales Post Surprise Drop For July
Unexpected drop raises worried about consumer spending
WASHINGTON - Retail sales outside of autos turned in a disappointing performance in July, underscoring concerns about the timing and durability of a recovery from the worst recession since World War II.
The Commerce Department said Thursday that retail sales fell 0.1 percent last month. Economists had expected a gain of 0.7 percent.
While autos, helped by the start of the Cash for Clunkers program, showed a 2.4 percent jump — the biggest in six months — there was widespread weakness elsewhere. Gasoline stations, department stores, electronics outlets and furniture stores all reported declines.

Wicomico County Has An Economic Development Director?????
My God, I've NEVER heard of this guy!I know I've brought up an Economic Development position to Rick Pollitt and others before but not once did they ever come back and mention this name and or that they already had one.
That being said, while I'm glad someone is considering taking over the old Brunswick Boat Manufacturing Plant on Northwood Drive, please educate me and tell me what else this guy has done to bring jobs to Wicomico County. Why have I never heard of him before, is he new? Has he been flying under the radar for years?
I look forward to learning ore.
A Letter To The Editor
"I don’t know who is responsible for the overpass on Main Street
They are in the process of painting it – I’m 57 years old and I have never seen the concrete look like this
It’s going to be beautiful – and a plea to those who may be forced to do graffiti – do a mural at least – no initials
You know when you come into Salisbury and it’s not crazy rush hour – Salisbury is really very pretty. I love it in the Spring when the Spring Fest people paint the dogwood’s on the concrete
I never was an advocate for driving through the plaza – and I hate the smell of exhaust when trying to have coffee or lunch – let alone watching where you walk for fear of getting run over.
But all in all Salisbury is quite nice when you take time to savor the experience.
Now………………..since they took down the theater – if we can convince them to paint the exposed side of the other building – it will go nicely with the grass they have planted.
Have a great day."
Whistle-Blower: Health Care Industry Engaging In PR Tactics
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Wendell Potter knows a little something about the health care industry's practices and is not afraid of to speak out as the health care reform debate heats up around the country.
The former vice president of corporate communications at insurance giant Cigna, who left his post, says the industry is playing "dirty tricks" in an effort to manipulate public opinion.
"Words matter, and the insurance industry is a master at linguistics and using the hot words, buzzwords, buzz expressions that they know will get people upset," he told CNN Wednesday.
Now a senior fellow on health care for the watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy, Potter writes a blog on health care reform. He is focusing on efforts to defeat legislation supporting a government health care plan -- something he supports.

Cash For Clunkers Throws Some Into Reverse
Dealers in used cars, parts join charities in feeling popular program’s bite
With Cash for Clunkers rolling on after the program was extended, new car dealers are smiling, but left out are companies and organizations whose business models are built on used vehicles.
People keep coming into Sam Ackerman’s car dealership and asking him about the deals under the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program.
Which normally wouldn’t be a problem, especially after the government last week tripled funds for the program, which offers rebates up to $4,500 for drivers who turn in certain old gas guzzlers and buy a new ride.
Except that Ackerman is sales manager at the Pre-Owned Department at D&E Dodge in Wilmington, N.C. That means he sells used cars.

Ben Cardin to Maryland – “You’re Just Uninformed”
Well, at least he didn’t call us UN-AMERICAN. No, we’re just uninformed. That was the message Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) delivered on WICO this morning as he prepares to discuss health care again – this time at a by invitation event with only pre-submitted, hand-picked questions allowed.
Fortunately for listeners, WICO host Bill Reddish politely stood up for the average citizen. To listen to Cardin, all those opposed to ObamaCare are deliberately being fed “misinformation”. Of course, everything coming from the mouths of ObamaCare proponents is 100% accurate. Right Ben?
Don’t forget, Cardin will speak at Salisbury University at 10:30 AM. Let him know what you think.

Obama Injects Himself Into Talks, Despite Risks
Deals he’s negotiated with legislators are potentially at odds with rhetoric
WASHINGTON - In pursuing his proposed overhaul of the health care system, President Obama has consistently presented himself as aloof from the legislative fray, merely offering broad principles. Prominent among them is the creation of a strong, government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers and press for lower costs.
Behind the scenes, however, Mr. Obama and his advisers have been quite active, sometimes negotiating deals with a degree of cold-eyed political realism potentially at odds with the president’s rhetoric.

Cheney Uncloaks His Frustration With Bush
‘Statute of limitations has expired’ on many secrets, former VP says
WASHINGTON - In his first few months after leaving office, former vice president Richard B. Cheney threw himself into public combat against the "far left" agenda of the new commander in chief. More private reflections, as his memoir takes shape in slashing longhand on legal pads, have opened a second front against Cheney's White House partner of eight years, George W. Bush.
Cheney's disappointment with the former president surfaced recently in one of the informal conversations he is holding to discuss the book with authors, diplomats, policy experts and past colleagues. By habit, he listens more than he talks, but Cheney broke form when asked about his regrets.

Brooke Mulford Update
Hey everybody me Brookie here just to say I am leaving for CHOP in the AM. I sure do appreciate all the good food everyone has made for me and Mommy. I also want to thank everyone for keeping me in their thoughts and prayers. I have had a really good week since I last checked in with you all. I have played really hard with all my toys and made lots of cards for everybody at my new table in our sunroom. I have taken lots of walks with Mommy and Bailey Dog and had a few more play dates with Riley and Morgan from next door. Today was a special treat, I got to see Ms Tara’s new baby. I could not get too close but she was so cute! Boy, do I miss Greyson and all my friends for that matter. I am sad to go back to CHOP, but I know it is what I must do to beat this Cancer. Over the last few days Mommy and Daddy have done some special things for me. First on Saturday, when Daddy came home from work so Mommy could go out with some friends that night he came in with a box and two sleeping bags. It was a tent and told me we were going to be camping out, oh boy was I excited. I told Mommy I wanted to do that and Daddy got the idea from Mommy I think, but I was excited to get the tent up and put all my stuffed animals in the tent. I was helping best I could to get the tent up and thank goodness Ms Robyn was here cleaning to help Daddy, because it might have taken a lot longer. We got everything all set up and I moved in. Daddy then made me a special dinner from one of Mommies’ recipe books that I wanted and it was really good, not as good as Chef Joel’s stuff he makes me at Market Street but Daddy will do in a pinch. After a bath Daddy then had another surprise, he made me smores! They were really good, but a little too messy for me, so I just ate some marshmallows. Then it was off to camp and Daddy read me some stories in the tent with just a flashlight. It was so special me and Daddy camping. I did wake up about 6:30AM and wanted to go see Mommy, which was ok with Daddy because I think Daddy’s back was hurting. Then on Monday we all did something really special. At 9AM Mommy started making popcorn and we got in the car and met Daddy in front of Regal Cinema and they arranged with Mr Seth who manages Regal Cinema to have a theater all to ourselves so I could see Ice Age! How cool was that? Although about half way thru I did get scared from the big dinosaurs and we had to leave, I wish I could have had my friend Gabe with me; he loves dinosaurs and he might have been able to calm me down. I did get to see a movie in the theater this summer and go camping! Then later that night I coaxed Mommy into camping, so I got to have 2 nights of camping! Then Mommies back was sore! Well, I should get some sleep so I am ready for another round of Chemo and the 2nd Transplant and close to another month at CHOP! I just want to say a very special Thank You to Mr Seth and Regal Cinemas for allowing me to have the opportunity to see a movie this summer!
It was really nice being home for these few weeks, it does make it that much harder going back though. As you can tell Brooke has been doing really well. We are praying really hard that things can continue to go as planned and this well, but we know not to get ahead of ourselves and take each day as it comes. As we pray for Brooke we would ask that you keep in your prayers as well some local friends of ours battling the Beast; Chris Palmer and his family, Sandy Fitzgerald-Angello and her family, Tracy Gibb III and his family, and a very special prayer to Dr. Alvarado’s family. Dr. Alvarado was very special to us and to Brooke as he was to everyone whose lives he touched!

Is those cell phones that everyone has clipped
Onto their belt or purse..
I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing
My garage door opener.
I also made a cover for my hearing aid
And now I have what they call blue teeth, I think.
You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant
Before I realized that
People didn't like me anyway..
I was thinking that women
Should put pictures of
Missing husbands on beer cans!
I was thinking about old age and
Decided that old age is 'when
You still have something on the ball,
But you are just too tired to bounce it'
I thought about making a fitness movie
For folks my age, and call it 'Pumping Rust'.
I've gotten that dreaded furniture disease..
That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!
When people see a cat's litter box,
They always say, 'Oh, have you got a cat?'
Just once I want to say,
'No, it's for company!'
Employment application blanks always ask
Who is to be notified in case of an emergency.
I think you should write, 'A Good Doctor'!
I was thinking about how people seem to
Read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older.
Then, it dawned on me,
They were cramming for their finals.
As for me,
I'm just hoping God
Grades on the curve.
CHILDRENS DAY WITH BOXING CHAMP FERNANDO GUERRERO
Eurshall Miller’s Collision Center Welcomes Delmarva Residents to Join the Fun
DELMAR, MD (August 4, 2009) – Today, Eurshall Miller’s Collision Center announced the introduction of the first annual Children’s Safety Day on August 15 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at 9154 Ocean Highway in Delmar, MD 21875. Fernando Guerrero, the undefeated boxer and humanitarian to the community from Salisbury, Maryland joins Eurshall Miller’s Collision Center to teach children safety in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Fernando will be available for autographs, photos and media interviews.
The Wicomico County Sheriff Department will be on hand with a K-9 demonstration. The K-9 demonstration is designed to illustrate the skills and technique used by the K-9 teams on a daily basis. The unit will give both children and adults the opportunity to gain knowledge and ask questions about the K-9 Unit and their wealth of safety knowledge. This demonstration will encourage children to build trust with officers and to learn anti-drug awareness.
The Delmar Fire Department will be onsite to discuss fire safety. Plus children will have the opportunity to tour their fire truck, which will be on location during the event.
Child car seat safety will also be included in the event’s schedule. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 80% of child restraints are used incorrectly. According to National Safe Kids Campaign, nearly a third of children ride in the wrong restraints for their age and size. Recent data from the Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network indicate that inappropriately restrained children are nearly three and a half times more likely to be seriously injured than their appropriately restrained counterparts. Car seats reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants and by 54% for children ages 1-4, and reduce the need for hospitalization by 69% for children ages 4 and under. National Safe Kids Campaign and NHTSA Child Passenger Safety Technician Program Participant Manual pg. C-4
Eurshall Miller’s Collision Center, a strong supporter of child safety, wants to help. To help, the Wicomico County Health Department will be on hand with information about car seat safety. This information is very important and can save the life of countless children. Eurshall Miller’s Collision Center welcomes the community as well as news media to attend and get safe!

Reparations By Way Of Health Care Reform
Legislation: Still believe in post-racial politics? Read the health care bill. It's affirmative action on steroids, deciding everything from who becomes a doctor to who gets treatment on the basis of skin color.
IBD Exclusive Series: Government-Run Healthcare: A Prescription For Failure
President Obama is on the record as being officially opposed to reparations for slavery. But as with other issues, you have to sift through his eloquent rhetoric and go beyond the teleprompter to get at what he really means.
His opposition to reparations is based on the fact they don't go far enough. In a 2004 questionnaire, he told the NAACP, "I fear that reparations would be an excuse for some to say, 'We've paid our debt,' and to avoid the much harder work."
Never mind there are those who thought we apologized at Gettysburg and that an African-American president is a recognition of the hard work that has been done.
At a press conference with minority journalists last fall, candidate Obama was pressed for more detail on his reparations position. He said he was more interested in taking action to help people who were just getting by. Because many of them are minorities, he said, that would help the same people who would benefit from reparations.
"If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, that will disproportionally affect people of color, because they are disproportionally uninsured," Obama said.
This may be a goal of Obama's health care plan: the redress of health care disparities on the basis of race and the punishment of those believed to be responsible, such as greedy doctors who perform unnecessary tests and procedures and greedy insurance and drug companies lusting for profits.
In his health care plan published during the campaign, it was written that Obama and Biden will "challenge the medical system to eliminate inequities in health care by requiring hospitals and health plans to collect, analyze and report health care quality for disparity populations and holding them accountable for any differences found."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi repeated this when she addressed the NAACP this month, saying: "It is a moral issue for our country to reduce health disparities, whether in diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cancer and HIV/AIDS."
The racial grievance industry under health care reform could be calling the shots in the emergency room, the operating room, the medical room, even medical school. As Terence Jeffrey, editor at large of Human Events puts it, not only our wealth, but also our health will be redistributed.
Under the Democrats' plans, if a medical school wants to receive contracts and grants from the federal government, it must operate under a quota system and be able to prove it. On Page 909, the House bill states: "In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the (HHS) secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds."
Jeffrey points out that in the name of eliminating "disparities" in health care, under the House version of the bill, payment to providers under the public option becomes a sort of Pavlovian reward and punishment system.
"The secretary," says Section 224, "shall design and implement the payment mechanisms and policies under this section in a manner that — (1) seeks to . . . reduce health disparities (including racial, ethnic and other disparities)."
Everyone deserves the best health care and doctors. That will not happen under a plan that emphasizes affirmative action and leads to rationing.
As the case of the New Haven, Conn., firefighters shows, reverse discrimination is wrong and dangerous.
Whether it's that firefighter coming up the ladder, or the brain surgeon about to remove that tumor in your head, everybody wants that person to be the best regardless of race or ethnicity — and not admitted by quotas and promoted by political correctness.
That's what all Americans are owed.
DelDOT Recovery Act Updates
Dover -- As of August 12, 2009, more than 30 projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are either completed, under construction, pending construction or currently advertised for bids. Major projects such as the I-95 Toll Plaza, Dover Transit Center and South Market Street in Wilmington are in various phases of pre-construction from archeology and environmental work to design.
This work has created or sustained several hundreds of jobs to date, and bulk of construction work has not yet begun.
Also, a national report notes Delaware is "outstanding" for spreading out ARRA funds on road repair, transit and walking and biking, while criticizing most other states. "The States and Stimulus" report by Smart Growth America and California Public Interest Research Group Education Fund recognizes only three states as "outstanding" Washington D.C. was first with 41.5 percent of its ARRA funds dedicated to public transportation, biking or pedestrian projects, followed by Delaware with 27.9 percent. A distant third was Iowa with 16.5 percent. The report can be found at www.calpirg.org/report.
An example of the diversity of projects includes the most recent announcements by DelDOT that the $3.5 million Old Lancaster Pike Streetscape Improvements Project is expected to begin construction in August, and that the $1 million Odessa Park & Ride Expansion Project (on Rt. 299, near Rt. 1) will begin construction sometime in late August or early September.
While DelDOT continues making significant progress on ARRA funded projects, the majority of construction activity will begin in the next few months. DelDOT was allocated $140.9 million in highway, bridges, pedestrian and transit-related projects funded through the ARRA. DelDOT is on track to obligate all funds by the February 17, 2010 deadline.
Judge Supports Palin In E-mail Case
No law prohibits Alaska governor from using private accounts, he says
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A judge ruled Wednesday that the Alaska governor's office can use private e-mail accounts to conduct state business, as former Gov. Sarah Palin sometimes did.
Superior Court Judge Jack W. Smith said in his ruling that there is no provision in Alaska state law that prohibits the use of private e-mail accounts when conducting state business.
The case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by Anchorage resident Andree McLeod, who contended such use of private e-mails denies citizens the right to inspect public records.
