Daily Times Is Like Toilet Paper, Wiping Up The Rear
It would seem the Daily Times is squirming all over the place trying to confirm all of our stories over the past few days. Sources continue to call me and e-mail me telling me that the Daily Times just called to confirm this story or that story.
However, I'll bet you good money that they'll NOT say a word about Sheriff Bobby Jones. They'll probably do a story about his Deputy Durham though. What can I say, they lost a TON of subscribers the other day by trying to cheat their Customers into paying an additional 50 cents for a weekday paper and then came back with their tails between their legs. Starting to sound familiar?
They did the follow up story on our exposing the Insley Letter we broke several days earlier. They already had the information published in the Sunday paper about Sgt. Stevens being arrested for a DUI, they just didn't put two and two together so they lost out on that one. They have purposely ignored the SPD posting Press Releases 6 days later than the actual event date and then dating their information the day of the incident.
They have yet to catch up on the fact that Ted Shea was actually shot 8 times, not 3 or 5. They have yet to do a follow up story, (that I know of) of Doris Smith from Fruitland. Then there's the Kratovil story and how he was against the stimulus bill and then he was for it. I'm not sure what spin, (if any) they put on his vote?
No word on Cracker Barrel? They wouldn't dare touch to Zoo or WWTP stories because they fell asleep at the wheel on BOTH of those stories. Have they said ANYTHING at all about the Marina? Nah, that's right, it's the Tilghman Times.
I know, how about the break down on all of the Bills and Legislation recently. Have they given the public any insight on what the Bills mean and how they affect people locally? Didn't think so. There's a Art Show at SU, besides Salisbury News, have you read anything in the Paper about it other than a paid advertisement?
Heck Folks, that's just the past two days. Can you please tell me just what it is you're paying for with that rag?
No doubt they'll see all the comments on the 2nd Amendment and pull an article about that out of their hat. It's probably scheduled for tomorrow. Oh, I'm sorry, am I patting Salisbury News on the back too much? But it feels soooooo good!
They'll probably have two Reporters and three Cameramen at tonights Forum. You know, just to make it look like they're out covering something.

Upon contacting the occupants of the vehicle, the deputy detected an obvious odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Deputies on scene began an investigation of the possible possession of illegal drugs and requested that the occupants exit the vehicle. Upon searching one of the passengers, Timothy Lee Whaley, he was found by a deputy to be hiding a bag that contained individual tablets of ecstasy. Because of the amount of tablets located it was indicative that Whaley intended to distribute them. Also located on Whaley was a bag that contained marijuana.
Whaley was arrested an transported to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, Whaley was detained by the Commissioner in the Detention Center in lieu of $50,000.00 bond.

Suspect: Tyquan J. Williams, 20, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 14 February 2009 at 5:30 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office observed what the deputy recognized as a hand to hand CDS transaction in the 700 block of Church Street in Salisbury. The deputy then observed that the suspected seller went into a store located on the corner of Church and Naylor streets. The deputy entered the store and observed the subject standing adjacent to the counter at which time the deputy detained the subject and identified him as Tyquan Williams. The deputy began looking around the vicinity where Williams was standing and located a clear baggie containing what the deputy recognized as crack cocaine, lying inside a box in plain view. Underneath the crack cocaine, the deputy located a .45 caliber handgun later discovered to be loaded with hollow point ammunition. Upon further examining the crack cocaine, the deputy discovered the pieces had been individually wrapped, which is indicative of Williams’ intent to distribute them.

Are We Ceding the Darkness to the Criminal Element?
Five times yesterday friends and family said to me, "Be careful if you are out after dark" or "Don't go out after dark unless you have to."
When we are asked to not go out and get our money, not to go get fast food, not to go get ice cream in our own car, with our own money and on our own time, do we give in and let the criminal elements in our community know that we have given up?
Had the past month seen big drug busts, awards won by our city, or the announcements of new task forces, our leaders would have been out in droves. Yet yesterday, Presidents Day, when we celebrate the great leaders of our nation, our city leaders were silent on issues that our community faces.
To the families of victims, to the businesses affected, to the citizens that travel to the same places where crime occurs there were no words to calm, no assurances that safety and order is being restored, no sense that we can get through tough times together.
I salute our officers investigating a month of violence in our community, doing all they can to bring perpetrators to justice. Our elected leaders? They garner a different emotion, because our elected leaders have been silent.
Leading and protecting every part of our community must be done even when our collective conscience is rattled by violence in our midst. Leaders have to lead when what we as citizens hold as safe and constant, no longer is.

More Illegally Placed Signs?
These signs aren't in front of a home or business so there is only one way they could have gotten here...a campaign worker...who clearly should have known better or been instructed on proper placement. It begs the question again, if Gary Comegys will turn a blind eye to this when it is in the open, what would he do behind closed doors?
For more of my thoughts on this, check out one of our recent posts.
One Year Ago Today
It was one year ago today we discovered the Salisbury Police Department lead by Chief Webster had installed this camera directly across the street from my building at 300 W. Main Street. It was very clear to me the Chief's paranoia coupled with Mayor Barrie Tilghman's paranoia that they wanted to see just who was walking through my front doors.
If you think that's bad, they actually learned that if they relocated the camera to the west side of the building the camera is installed on, they could get an even better view of my building, so they did just that.
The GRANTS that came in for these cameras were for very high crime areas. 300 W. Main Street is NOT at all considered a high crime area. In fact, it was my understanding that these cameras had to go into places where there was a high risk of illegal gun usage.
So here's what I'd like to ask the Daily Times. If the Graffiti you refused to cover Downtown wasn't such a big deal then why are there cameras all over the Downtown area? Where's all the crime Chiefy, is it Downtown where you have in fact placed numerous spy cameras?
One of the many reasons you need to go is because you spend entirely too much time trying to catch Joe Albero doing anything wrong instead of concentrating on real Police work. Installing this camera where there is NO CRIME as well as some of the other areas Downtown that aren't necessary shows your paranoia. Now if you had placed it on Church Street and some of the other high crime areas, even along Rt. 13 where there are so many prostitutes, you wouldn't even have to send cars to that area. You could just view them on camera, collect tag numbers and have Officers pull the cars over, period.
Oh well, I'm not going to show you how to keep your job. I think you suck as the Chief of Police and I personally hope they run you out of Salisbury with your tail between your legs, just as Barrie Tilghman is doing.

THIRD ARREST MADE IN SALISBURY HOMICIDE
(Salisbury, MD) – A third suspect believed to have been involved in the murder of a Wicomico County man one month ago was arrested and charged today by State Police and the Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation.
The accused is identified as Alan R. Stanford, 38, of the 27000-block of Log Cabin Road, Salisbury, Md. He is charged with first degree murder, second degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and robbery. He is being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center.
Continuing the cooperative investigation between the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and the Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation, investigators had been attempting to locate and talk with Stanford. Police investigators picked him up at about 9:00 a.m. today at a residence in the 700-block of Ebeneezer Street, Salisbury.
Stanford was taken for questioning to the Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation office. Following further investigation and after consultation with the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office, Stanford was charged with murder.
Stanford is one of three individuals now charged with the January 17, 2009 murder of Brookes E. Harmon, 27, of the 1200-block of Flamingo Drive, Salisbury, Md. Harmon was visiting in the 600-block of Dennis Street, Salisbury, early that morning when three men entered the home, then bound and assaulted him. An autopsy revealed Harmon died from asphyxiation.
On February 3, 2009, investigators served Wicomico County Grand Jury indictments on Carlos L. Mills, 28, and Shala N. Dorman, who are both from Salisbury and are both also charged with the murder of Harmon. Another male individual police were attempting to interview in connection with this investigation died in an apparent suicide on January 28, 2009.
Investigators from the State Police Homicide Unit and the Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation have been assisted throughout this investigation by police officers, deputies and troopers from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Salisbury Police Department, Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force, and the State Police Salisbury Barracks. Continual assistance has also been provided by the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office.

COMEGYS SHOULD RENOUNCE RICHARD INSLEY’S SUPPORT – BUT DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH
After this blog exposed Insley’s diatribe directed at Mr. Comegy’s main opponents in Salisbury’s upcoming mayoral election, the Daily Times’ city reporter (Laura D’Alessandro) wrote an article about the Insley’s letter to his tenants that reiterated the essence of his slime and quoted Comegys and the other candidates mentioned above. Unlike Bob Caldwell and Jim Ireton, who described Insley’s conduct for what it is – “despicable” (Mr, Caldwell’s term) – Comegys actually welcomed Insley’s support and action.
This clearly confirms that Comegys’ collaboration with certain landlords like Insley is alive and well, which is not surprising under the circumstances. Unless a substantial number of their tenants can be conned into voting for Comegys (and against their own best interest), he has no chance of becoming Salisbury’s next mayor. His yeoman service in support of Barrie Tilghman’s tax and sewer and water fee increases, and other episodes too numerous to recount in this post, make him by far the worst candidate in the race – for both homeowners and tenants. He even once supported a new “food tax,” before he voted against it.
The landlords of Insley’s ilk need Comegys in the mayor’s office to continue the special treatment that the current Tilghman administration has afforded them. That’s why we can see all those yard signs with Comegys’ name at their rental homes. Many of them had signs for Comegys in the City elections in 2003 and 2007, when he ran for the Council.
Insley and a certain group of landlords who control SAPOA need Comegys to be the next mayor as much as he needs them to support him by duping their tenants into voting for him. If he does not renounce the action that Insley has taken on behalf of him in both this and other City elections, they deserve each other and the wrath of all voters on March 3rd.
PENALTY IMPOSED ON LEGISLATORS FOR ADVERSE ECONOMIC IMPACT LEGISLATION
As most of you already probably know, I have been reading each and every Maryland Legislature House and Senate Bill synopsis for each of the past 5 legislative sessions.
If there is one thing that I cannot tolerate. . . it is an elected representative who portrays himself to be in the best interest of his constituency when in fact he/she sponsors legislation that is detrimental to the general public.
Thus I'm looking for one good politician who will 'step-up to the plate' and sponsor legislation that will impose penalties and punishment on those legislators who propose to do harm to our citizenry and small businesses.
HB-819 is one such Bill. The Bill is labeled Workplace Fraud Act of 2009 but in reality it is pure unadulterated Socialization.
I propose we solicit an elected Legislator to propose a countermeasure to the above noted bill and entitle it - PENALTY IMPOSED ON LEGISLATORS FOR ADVERSE ECONOMIC IMPACT LEGISLATION.
If the sponsors of the above noted legislation are so bent on a complete reclassification of all Federal Express Independent Haulers, Chicken Growers, Chicken Catchers, Construction Trim-out crews, etc. . . then they shouldn't mind having to ante-up the employers portion of Social Security, Workman's Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, Federal Unemployment Insurance benefits as a result of their proposing such a sweeping Socialization package.
Thus I propose that we have one of our RESPECTED elected representatives sponsor a sweeping comprehensive legislative Bill to monetarily penalize the sponsors of this Socialistic Bill - HB-819 with the price tag they are going to inflict on our small business community.
In addition, it is interesting to note that another Maryland anti-business bill is in the works that has received very little publicity. HB-1188 rescinds virtually every Maryland incentive a business would receive for employing more employees, business expansion, creating business Enterprise zones, by adding adverse penalties.

2nd Amendment Right Comment Worthy Of A Post
"Let's talk. First and foremost, the right of self defense is an individual right. No one can do it for us nor should they be expected to. Not the police. Not the teachers in our schools. The Constitution does NOT give us our rights, it merely recognizes those that were given to us by GOD. Our right to defend ourselves is one of those GOD given rights and no one has the right to take it away. It is inalienable (see Declaration of Independence). The mere fact that any form of Govt. took away our right to keep and bear arms is a clear indication that they are standing in the way of our right to defend ourselves and that cannot be tolerated. This is evidenced every time an honest, law abiding, unarmed citizen is attacked by some thug. Each time a law abiding citizen is found in possession of a firearm, regardless of the location, and is charged with a crime, is evidence that the Govt. is in the process of systematically stripping us of our rights to defend ourselves. I carry. I will always carry. I refuse to be a victim created by our govt. Know that when you are in the process of being robbed at gunpoint or knife point, you are very likely to be shot or stabbed regardless of whether or not your comply with the demands of the bad guy. You are like a cowardly sheep about to be slaughtered. Who will care for your family? Who will raise your kids? Will the govt. do it? Is that what you want?
Second, a militia isn't set up for the purpose of travelling our neighborhoods in vehicles with the purpose of ferreting out criminals and administering street justice then and there. A militia is set up to uphold the Constitution of the United States. It's set up to defend our nation and our people from enemies, foriegn and domestic. When I say domestic, that includes a tyrant govt. that serves to oppress its citizens and turn them into subjects by stripping us of GOD given rights. Many states have a regulated militia. Michigan is perhaps the best example where almost every county has one. It has been determined that the Army and the National Guard do NOT qualify as a militia because they are regulated BY the govt. and offer no protection against a tyrant govt. They support the govt. The well regulated militia of which the second amendment spoke is comprised of the PEOPLE. We have an obligation to ourselves and our children to exercise that right......but only to carry out the objectives listed above. We cannot be vigilante's. That would be considered anarchy. None of us wants that.
I would urge you all to take a firearms safety course. To learn safe shooting skills. To practice "shoot - don't shoot" exercises and develope those skills because you will be held accountable if you defend yourself and you injure an innocent person. With freedom comes responsibility. I would urge you all to carry a concealed firearm for the purposes of self defense regardless of laws created unconstitutionally by those who would have us be dead victims rather than armed citizens. A state legislature does not have the authority take away rights given by GOD and recognized by our Constitution, yet we have stood by and let it happen. Look at the results. I would further urge everyone to write or call your representatives and express your feelings about the GOD given right of self defense and your desire to eliminate the current laws that turn law abiding citizens with the desire to defend themselves into criminals by forbidding them to carry firearms for defense purposes.
Support a local militia but ONLY for the purposes of defending your Constitution and your Country. Someone stand up NOW and form one right here in Maryland. I think you would be surprised how much support you would get and how fast it would grow. Better not wait. Time is of the essence!"

Jesus And The Democrat
A Republican in a wheelchair entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee.
The Republican looked across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus sitting over there?"
The waitress no dded "yes," so the Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.
The next patron to come in was a Libertarian with a hunched back.He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea.
He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, "My treat."
The thi rd patron to come into the restaurant was a Democrat on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered,
"Hey there, honey! How's about gettin' me a cold glass of Miller Light?"
He, too, looked across the restaurant and asked, "Is that God's boy over there?"
The waitress once more nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold glass of beer. "On my bill," he said.
As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Republican felt the strength come back into his legs, got up, and danced a jig
out the door.
Jesus also passed by the Libertarian, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Libertarian felt his back straightening up, and he raised his hands, praised the Lord and did a series of back flips out the door.
Then, Jesus walked towards the Democrat.
The Democrat jumped up and yelled, "Don't touch me ... I 'm collecting disability."

Barns Of Wicomico County
Things are changing within the landscape of the Eastern Shore. I took a short ride this past weekend and captured these photos along the way. I remember riding down Rt. 301 heading South bound when I was much younger and seeing the tobacco hanging in the Barns wherever you looked. It was sad to see those Barns disappear 30 years ago and now I'm seeing it happen here. Bummer!
If You Home School Your Child You Should Read This
Recently, I was asked by Earlene Sorrels to be a contributor to her online Newspaper for Home School Families entitled Maryland Home School News.
With my six years of experience as a Home School Mom, she thought it would be best if I were an advice columnist.
In the few weeks that it has been up and running, it's popularity has spread like wildfire.
I am very happy to have been asked to do this and am looking forward to helping families navigate the gauntlet that is Home Schooling.
You can see the newspaper and my column at http://marylandhomeschoolnews.webs.com/homeschooladvice.htm
Have a great week!

Two Candidates Say They Want To Get Rid Of Police Chief Webster
While crime continues to race out of control within the City of Salisbury, it has been 6 days since their last Press Release and we just experienced one of the wildest weekend we've ever known in this City.
Not only are they not keeping the Citizens informed as to ALL of the criminal activity even when they do send out Press Releases, this is an election year and they're clearly keeping everything they possibly can extra quiet.
At this point I think the City Council should make the Salisbury Fire Department release ALL of their calls as well so the citizens can get a complete grip on the stabbings we NEVER hear about, yet the Ambulances seem to bring people to PRMC almost daily for such.
I have spoken to TWO of the Mayoral Candidates and they have very clearly informed me that they will terminate Chief Webster should they get elected just as soon as humanly possible. So you know, I have never spoken to Della Penna. It's about time someone took the bull by the horns and made a stand as to just what they're going to do. It isn't about my dislike towards Chief Webster. It's about CRIME. It's about OPEN GOVERNMENT. Chief Webster and Staff refuse to expose everything and Lord Knows if the real crime is actually being reported properly, there's no accountability.
Imagine this. Imagine if Officers are being told to rate certain crimes as #3 crimes instead of #2 crimes? I know that when they found that murdered prostitute, Chief Webster desperately wanted it to be a County crime but the Sheriff's department said it was in the City, not the County. I know this as well. The Sheriff's Department was willing to take on the investigation though, should Chief Webster want them to handle it. Chiefy refused once he finally figured out it was in the City and not the County.
Some have said it's not the Chief's fault things are as bad as they are. Well, to those of you nay sayers out there who know absolutely NOTHING about the morale within the SPD, the Officers leaving the SPD and the fact that crime continues to rise, you need to get your head examined. In business, you don't continue retaining your top person in charge when things continue to spiral like they have with Webster in charge.
You replace that individual and find someone willing to wear a Uniform every day and be a part of the Team/Brotherhood like Sheriff Mike Lewis. You work side by side with the State Police and County Police. Simply put, Webster needs to go before another innocent person is killed in this City. The Officers are doing the very best they can with what they have but it's the end of the line for Webster should one of these two Mayoral Candidates get elected.
Webster has been vindictive and paranoid for years now. No one has ever forced him to show his cards like I have. Look Folks, a perfect example is the Daily Times. The ONLY time they expose ANY crime in Salisbury is when someone is murdered or shot. They get the SPD Press Releases just as often as I do yet you NEVER read about the criminal activity going on in Salisbury. Heck, they denied there were ANY Gangs in Salisbury. The Daily Times even tried to cover up all the Graffiti throughout the Downtown area until we produced photo after photo, day after day. Then they finally put up a tiny 1" article about it.
Change is absolutely necessary for Salisbury and IMHO a vote for Comegys is a vote for more of the exact same thing. Many people wonder why so many thousands of people come to Salisbury News every day. It's because we REPORT things like criminal activity in Salisbury, unlike the Daily Times. We deliver it in as Real Time as humanly possible and we're dedicated to YOU. The Daily Times collects their 75 cents per day from what used to be 24,000 people a day. That means they take in around $18,000.00 a DAY or $648,000.00 a year in subscriptions alone. That does NOT include what they take in through advertising. So you have to ask yourself, what are YOU really getting from the Daily Times? Certainly not your money's worth, that's for sure.
I'll give the Chief this. They do make the crime information available to the Daily Times. The Daily Times just refuses to print it. Ask each Candidate what they plan on doing with the Police Chief should they be elected.

Salisbury News Comments Still Very Strong
Even though weekend numbers tend to drop off quite a bit, lately we have experienced a very strong presence visitor wise on weekends. Some can talk a big talk about how many visitors they get but the comments are what makes a Blog Influential. Here's what we have seen since last Tuesday.
Tuesday 252 comments.
Wednesday 264 comments
Thursday 305 comments.
Friday 320 comments.
Saturday 231 comments.
Sunday 237 comments.
Monday 250 comments. As of 11:00 PM
The next time you happen to visit the Daily Times and look to see how many comments they have ANYWHERE, it should be very clear to everyone visiting Salisbury News that this is a very interactive Website. Their comments come nowhere near what this Website brings in and that goes for ANY other Blog I have ever seen out there.
They can talk all they want about visitors and make up numbers pulled out of the thin air, we're very proud of what we have accomplished and together with YOU we are making a difference. While we're not rejecting nearly as many comments as we used to, this Site has become even more productive. It will be very interesting how the elections turn out this go around.
Thanks for visiting and participating.

Daily Times Ethic Principles Report Card
The Guiding Principles of the Daily Times, or What's Wrong with this Picture?
Folks, here are the Principles of Ethical Conduct as published by the Gannett Corporation, to be guidelines for each of its newspapers. They are taken from the Daily Times website (www.delmarvanow.com), listed under Reader Services.
Let's have a look at each of the Priciples listed, and compare what we might think as an acceptable level of compliance of each of them against what we see and have seen in the Daily Times. To give an idea of the Times' compliance, we'll assign a letter grade to each:
A = completely or usually compliant with intent of principle;
B = often compliant with intent of principle;
C = sometimes compliant with intent of principle;
D = rarely compliant with intent of principle;
F = never compliant with intent of principle.
Principles of ethical conduct
As a Gannett newspaper, The Daily Times is a leader in the company's bold initiative to build credibility with readers. At a time when the news media are under greater scrutiny than ever, the Gannett Newspaper Division has adopted Principles of Ethical Conduct for Newsrooms that commit each Gannett journalist to the industry's highest professional standards. That commitment also is being shared with the public. Here are details about the principles and how they should be practiced.
A fine opening statement. The comment of the news media being under greater scrutiny is probably true, but to what end? The processes involved with calling the media to the carpet, save through the courts, is very often controlled by the media. That the Gannet Newspaper Division has adopted and publishes this code of conduct is laudable, but evidences that it enforces the behavior in its publications is lacking. The final sentence of the preamble speaks of the principles and how they "should" be practiced, not how Gannett will ensure that they will be practiced.
WE ARE COMMITTED TO:
• Seeking and reporting the truth in a truthful way
What does this mean, exactly? The wording is confusing. Would someone seek or report the truth in an untruthful way? If it means what we think it does, we have to say that the Daily Times, in stories that require some depth of investigation (which are few and far between), reports the truth sometimes, but not all of the time. We've seen some important Times stories that actually rival cheap fiction.
Grade: C-
• Serving the public interest
Is it in the public interest to consistently publish news which is wholly truthful and completely unbiased? Are these the benchmarks of a newspaper's serving the public interest? We think so. The Daily Times seems to confuse serving the public interest in a manner befitting an unchallenged area newspaper with manipulating the news.to fit its agenda, an agenda that most of us haven't yet figured out. This, in our opinion, does not serve the public interest; in fact, it is counter to it.
Grade: D-
• Exercising fair play
In our estimation, exercising fair play is something we learned in grade school: everyone deserves to be heard; deserves not to be chastised for an idea or opinion, and that everyone deserves an equal chance. The Daily Times falls short in creating and maintaining an environment where fair play is a part of the game. One side too often gets a seven hundred word opportunity to speak on some topic, while those with other (not necessarily opposing) views are restricted to two hundred words. In many cases, those with other views don't get the opportunity at all; their letters and comments are never published, or published so late as to render them moot.
Grade, based on gross examples: F
• Maintaining independence
We assume that maintaining independence refers to the paper's keeping itself as an independent entity, not as a mouthpiece for any group or individual, save the editors of the paper. We feel that the Daily Times falls short in this principle, as it has again and again given special privilege to at least one public figure, to the degree that it often appears as though the Times has become an organ of local government.
Grade: D-
• Acting with integrity
If by integrity Gannett means "firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values" (Merriam Webster definition), we feel that far too many times the Times has not held with the tenets of responsible journalism. We expect that a publication with the local importance that the Times has would always take the high road. We are very disappointed that it doesn't.
Grade: F
Seeking and reporting the truth in a truthful way
• We will dedicate ourselves to reporting the news accurately, thoroughly and in context.
We take this to mean that, as in a court proceeding, the Times will "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." If so, the Daily Times has a very, very long way to go.
Grade: F
• We will be honest in the way we gather, report and present news.
Merriam Webster defines honest as "free from fraud or deception", and "marked by integrity, and marked by free, forthright, and sincere expression." We have no real qualms about the way the Times gathers its news; for the most part its young reporters follow the standard format, which is neither aggressive nor offensive, but does go for all the salient facts. Reporting, it seems, is not always completely factual after it leaves the reporters' hands, however. It has often been the case that editors will change content to something that leaves forthrightness and honesty in the dust. We have to give two separate grades here, the first to the kids who are little more than temps, and then to the paper itself, which is really saying the editors and publisher.
Grade 1: B+
Grade 2: F (based on several episodes of actually changing an ethics code-compliant piece of work into one that isn't)
• We will be persistent in the pursuit of the whole story.
Pursuing and printing are evidently two different things. Whether the Times actually is persistent in its pursuit of the whole story is an unknown to its readers. Too often do stories appear in the Times without full details and without follow up. This is particularly the case with political stories, where one side is told and another side completely left out or minimized to the point that it becomes a footnote.
Grade: C-
• We will keep our word.
As you've never actually given the readership your word, the point is moot. The more paranoid of our group state that it has the same effect as if you did give your word, but with your fingers crossed behind your back. We're going to extend the benefit of the doubt and give a nominal grade here.
Grade: C
• We will hold factual information in opinion columns and editorials to the same standards of accuracy as news stories.
One of our reviewing staff actually had milk coming from his nose after reading this one.
To actually say that the Times holds its editorials and opinion columns to the same standards would be somewhat of a compliment. The Times editorials, whether homegrown or guest, often go right off the charts into the realm of the Three Big Lies. It is evident that little, if any fact checking is done before these hit the streets and the Internet. Some have been of sufficiently low character as to cause damage to reputations and characters. A couple of weeks ago an editorial was so poorly researched and sensationally written that the Times removed the comments section a few hours after on-line readers' corrections called the Times out on how dishonest and manipulative it was. No retraction or correction was offered in subsequent issues.
Grade: F
• We will seek to gain sufficient understanding of the communities, individuals and stories we cover to provide an informed account of activities.
We're not sure what this actually means. We'll hold a grade in abeyance.
Grade: none
Serving the public interest
• We will uphold First Amendment principles to serve the democratic process.
Our reviewers were at odds on this one. While the First Amendment deals with the concept of Free Speech and the Freedom of the Press, we're not sure to which Gannnett refers, or what they see themselves as doing that serves the democratic process. We have noted that in the instance of Salisbury City Council and Mayoral elections, one of the primary exercises of the local democratic process, the Daily Times exhibits gross bias in its presentation of candidates' qualifications, amount of column space it devotes, and has even printed comments by seated government officials it knew to be libelous. Based on this, and considering the magnitude of the Constitutional transgression, the consensus reached is:
Grade: F
• We will be vigilant watchdogs of government and institutions that affect the public.
Okay. We had some fun with this one, but it doesn't mean that we weren't serious in the end. A watchdog barks when it sees/hears/smells trouble. We think that the Daily Times, as a watchdog, is a) Deaf; B) Blind; C) Suffering from an olfactory sensation disorder; D) All of the above. One of our reviewers said that it was none of the above, but that the Daily Times was a dog that either wouldn't (conflict of interest) or couldn't (it's a Basenji.) Whatever the case, the Times rates a failing grade.
Grade: F
• We will provide the news and information that people need to function as effective citizens.
Limiting the that news and information to suit the Times editors' and publisher's notion of how it is that people should function as effective citizens is certainly not in keeping with the thrust of this principle. The Times is guilty of manipulating the news, promoting the biased opinions of its favorite sons and daughters, and foreshortening the ability of the readership to make its own decisions, based on accurate, forthright and truthful reporting.
Grade: F
• We will seek solutions as well as expose problems and wrongdoing.
The Daily Times failed this one from the starting gate. The review group members recounted dozens of times that the paper hasn't reported wrongdoings, suppressed truth, and, worst of all, condemned those who did.
Grade: F
• We will provide a public forum for diverse people and views.
Well, finally one in which the Times sometimes shows some compliance, albeit very selectively and not always in a timely manner.
Grade: C-
• We will reflect and encourage understanding of the diverse segments of our community.
What little has been done in this arena is minimal. The Daily Times has done more to promote ignorance of those diverse segments than it has to promote and encourage understanding of them.
Grade: D
• We will provide editorial and community leadership.
What was missing here was the word "responsible."
Grade: D-
• We will seek to promote understanding of complex issues.
This has been a gross failure of the Daily Times. We couldn't come up with even one example of the Times ever presenting a complex issue, let alone promoting the understanding of it. We feel that the Times thinks, to be blunt, of its readers, as one of our group said, "A bunch of Gomers", not smart enough to understand a complex issue, and therefore not important enough to whom to devote column space. It is more the case that the Times strongly presents one side of an issue, weakly presents another, then lets the cards fall where they may.
Grade: D
Exercising fair play
• We will treat people with dignity, respect and compassion.
There is only one place in the Daily Times where this consistently occurs: the Obituaries. While the Times often speaks ill of the living (obliquely, of course), it never speaks ill of the dead.
Grade: D
• We will correct errors promptly.
Our idea of prompt may not be the Times'. Our idea of never is obviously not the Times'. Corrections to frank errors and misstatements and outright falsehoods rarely grace the Times' pages. And when they do, they're buried in a tiny paragraph on a lesser page.
Grade: F
• We will strive to include all sides relevant to a story and not take sides in news coverage.
Our consensus: Define "strive" for us. And "take sides", too.
Grade: F
• We will explain to readers our journalistic processes.
Is this an on-demand process? When and where will this occur?
Grade: F
• We will give particular attention to fairness in relations with people unaccustomed to dealing with the press.
We don't know how fair the Times is with those who haven't ever been interviewed. We do know that fairness in reporting is a primary problem. We have to give the benefit of the doubt here.
Grade: B-
• We will use unnamed sources as the sole basis for published information only as a last resort and under specific procedures that best serve the public's right to know.
It is rare that the Daily Times publishes a story with an unnamed source (none of us could remember one). It is more often the case that the Times doesn't attribute the comments to an anonymous source, but vaguely notes that "someone" or "some people" said this or that. This is a very serious shortcoming in the journalistic integrity of any newspaper, as it leads the readers, given the Times' history of "making stuff up", to believe that there was no one to whom to attribute the statements. Again, though we must give benefit of doubt.
Grade: B-
• We will be accessible to readers.
This is not promising to be responsive, just accessible. The Daily Times accepts letters, email, phone calls and personal visits. It has a Feedback feature on its website. Response varies.
Grade: C
Maintaining independence
• We will remain free of outside interests, investments or business relationships that may compromise the credibility of our news report.
More milk in the nose. It is far too often the case that the Daily Times has provided a private springboard for Salisbury's Mayor and select City Council members. It has supported the political campaigns of some and condemned those of others, often seemingly at the bidding of Mayor Tilghman. It has long been suspected that the Daily Times responds to certain groups based on their connection with the Times' sources of advertising revenue. We feel that the Times' failure to disavow these relationships represents a continuation of biased and preferential reporting.
Grade: F
• We will maintain an impartial, arm's length relationship with anyone seeking to influence the news.
One of our reviewers commented that the Times must have those little Thalidomide baby arms, as for the past twelve years, Barrie Tilghman has been right in the Times' face. It was the unanimous vote of the review committee that the Times' relationship with some who would influence the news has been a serious problem; that the paper has lost much of its credibility due to the influence of Mayor Tilghman and her followers.
Grade: F
• We will avoid potential conflicts of interest and eliminate inappropriate influence on content.
Grade: F
• We will be free of improper obligations to news sources, newsmakers and advertisers.
Grade: F
• We will differentiate advertising from news.
We have seen many, many instances of the Times running a news piece that is advertising for a political candidate, and a seated politician with an agenda. We do, in all fairness, acknowledge that the Times does not sell soap or acne cream in an editorial.
Grade: C-
Acting with integrity
• We will act honorably and ethically in dealing with news sources, the public and our colleagues.
And when will that begin?
Grade: F
• We will obey the law.
Which law is that? One reviewer replied, "The Law of the Jungle." We all had to agree.
Grade: D-
• We will observe common standards of decency.
The Times does not use foul language, even in quotes. It does not depict bloody wreckage. It does not display cheesecake photographs. However, decency also regards honesty, fair play and the telling of the unvarnished truth.
Grade: D
• We will take responsibility for our decisions and consider the possible consequences of our actions.
And so far, it's been an even hand, aside from the fact that readership is falling, partly due to the decline in journalistic integrity.
Grade: B
• We will be conscientious in observing these Principles.
The Times has been anything but conscientious in observing the bulk of these. Some of us were very surprised that we had access to the list at all via the paper's website, given that most of the principles are evidently considered worthlessby the Times' editors and publisher.
Grade: F
• We will always try to do the right thing.
This remains to be seen. The proof of the pudding is that the Times do the right thing, not try to do it.
Grade: D
Note:
No statement of principles and procedures can envision every circumstance that may be faced in the course of covering the news. As in the United States Constitution, fundamental principles sometimes conflict. Careful judgment and common sense must be applied to make the decisions that best serve the public interest and result in the greatest good.
To help protect these Principles, practices have been drafted to address such subjects as unnamed sources, correcting errors and other issues. These guidelines have been distributed within the newsroom and are available upon request.
This newspaper and its news professionals are committed to observing the highest standards of journalism, as expressed by these Principles.

Oh, the final grade?
A generously given D minus.
A = completely or usually compliant with intent of principle;
B = often compliant with intent of principle;
C = sometimes compliant with intent of principle;
D = rarely compliant with intent of principle;
President 'has something to hide' about eligibility
By Bob Unruh
© 2009 WorldNetDaily
Alan Keyes, a 2008 presidential candidate who now is a plaintiff in one of the many lawsuits seeking to verify whether Barack Obama qualifies under the U.S. Constitution's requirements to occupy the Oval Office, says the tactics adopted by lawyers for the president confirm there is an issue for the courts to investigate.
Keyes, who was the candidate of the American Independent Party, cited a recent exchange with lawyers representing Obama in which they warned they might seek monetary penalties against those raising the question of Obama's eligibility under the Constitution's requirement that the president be a "natural born" citizen.
"It confirms the common sense suspicion that he won't act forthrightly in this matter because he has something to hide," Keyes wrote on his blog after WND reported the warning about "sanctions" was raised by Obama's defense lawyers.
The onetime U.S. ambassador explained on his posting that those raising questions over Obama's elibigility – so far – have simply been ignored by courts.
"In effect, the courts are refusing the admit plaintiffs on this matter into the courtroom, thereby denying them justice," he wrote. "Madison wrote, 'Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society. It will be pursued either until it be obtained or until liberty be lost in the pursuit.'"
