Senate Health Care Bill Would Force Some Middle Class Families To Pay $15,200 Yearly Insurance Fee

Even without the inclusion of a 'public option', the health care bill presented in the Senate by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) would make some middle-class American families pay what amounts to a $15,200 annual federally-mandated insurance fee, according to facts revealed in analyses published by the Congressional Budget Office.

The fee would result from the facts that the bill requires individuals—but not employers—to purchase health insurance plans and that families that earn up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level would be given government subsidies to purchase insurance in government-regulated insurance exchanges while families earning more than 400 percent of the federal poverty level would be denied government subsidies.

A family of four—two parents and two children—earning $88,200 would be at 400 percent of the poverty level this year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A family of four earning $88,201, therefore, would not be eligible for a federal subsidy to buy insurance under the Senate health-care bill. If the mother and father in such a family could not get employer-based health insurance—because their employers decided not to buy their workers insurance—the family would be required by law to purchase a policy with its own money that would cost an estimated $15,200 per year, according to the CBO.

  1. The really screwed up part about this whole insurance crap is once the idiot is out of office the next president (hopefully a good one) is going to have a huge mess trying to reverse all of these idiotic decisions.

  3. The new guys that run in the next election (are you reading this, Andy?) had better have a plan to start undoing this mess-- whether it be repealing laws or whatever.
Be ready to fix this mess PRONTO!
And get over this 'nice guy' stuff-- the left is playing HARDBALL..you'd better quit worrying about who's feelings are gonna be hurt and start doing what's RIGHT FOR AMERICA.

  5. Gosh, that is called spreading the wealth. I will be paying $15,200/year so I can subsidize some worthless slug living in downtown Detroit that has never done anything for a living except sell crack on the street corner.
    Economic justice the Obama way!

  8. I thought the "buy-in" to Medicare would probably be a good thing as it would add revenue to the Medicare account.
Then, I watched an interview with one of the senators and he said the buy-in would cost over $400.00 a month!
Hell, I can get a policy for my husband for that much money but I cannot afford $1,000/month for insurance coverage on the both of us.
What they're working on in Washington is going to help nobody EXCEPT the Insurance Companies!
I've said it over and over and over. Putting some "plan" together will not work unless you put restraints on the insurance companies!
My husband was very sick back in college days but has been very healthy for the last 35 years. He MAYBE will end up in a doctor's office once a year for a sinus infection, but nothing related to his prior illness, but because of his "past medical history", nobody wants to offer him an affordable rate! He has no choice but to divulge the illness from long ago since it did do some permanent damage even though he's had no affects from that damage. That's just not right!
I'm thankful every day that I have a job (even though I have no benefits) when many people are jobless at this time. I just hope those people who DO have health insurance would think the same way and stop slamming us who cannot afford the insurance and calling us names.
I'm not asking for FREE insurance, I'm asking for AFFORDABLE insurance! I believe that is what many are asking for. I don't want a hand out, I need a hand up!
I don't make $50,000+/year. Maybe then, I'd be able to afford it!

  9. 3:01 with all due respect you may be a very small percentage that truly needs help, I don't know you say I cannot say one way or another. However, the fact of the matter is people like my husband for example have worked since 16 years of age to support himself and now his family and we should not be penalized for doing what needed to be done to support ourselves all these years. My husband's neck was broken when he was a teen, yes a broken neck, yet we have never had an insurance carrier turn us away for a perexisting condition, so it seems you are not telling the whole story.

The point is if what you are saying is fact then we still shouldn't be responsible for covering your or any one's insurance costs. What needs to happen is the insurance company needs to be forced to accept your husband and people like him.

I'm sorry but I have busted my butt to get where I am because I never wanted to be a statistic. I feel because I overcame a lot to get where I am those who make the choice not to better themselves should not be entitled to the same things I sacrificed years of luxury to obtain. I bettered myself and the future of my family when I could have sat on my tail collecting welfare every month, I worked two and sometimes three jobs to care for my family when it was needed, I struggled through college while raising a family and managed to get through with a GPA to be proud of. If someone is not willing to better their life and EARN their income and medical insurance then they should not feel entitled to it.

America is not the land of take the money from the people who earn it and give it to the people that know how to work the system and protest when they don't get their way.

  11. Let me answer you back. My husband did not have an INJURY, he had a serious ILLNESS which caused permanent damage to his liver!
This is not even close to what you described happened to your husband.
I'm already working two jobs, one full time and one part time so it's not like I'm sitting on my butt not working to pay my bills.
And I'll say it again, I'm not asking for FREE health insurance, I'm asking for AFFORDABLE insurance.
But once again, I posted one thing and two of you read something different.
Guess that's the difference between the haves and the have nots?
No wonder this country is like it is! How dare you judge me like you did!
