What The Heck Do These People Think They're Doing?
Between the City Leaders and the County Leaders, have they los their minds? This is what you get when two groups don't reach out to the public first and start to resolve issues.
The Wicomico Library wants to take over an entire section of Riverfront Property, extremely valuable property, mind you. However, what makes it worse is their stupidity in even considering such an idea.
You see Folks, the Library pays NO TAXES. Not only are they planning, (in this proposal) to take away a ton of parking Downtown, they're also taking away metered parking.
OK, everyone knows Monday nights are not the greatest nights for the restaurant business but look at the photos above taken last night. The Market Street Inn has pretty much packed TWO parking lots. This was taken at around 8:00 PM last night.
The new Library proposal takes away all but about 15 parking spaces for the Market Street Inn, seriously.
While everyone else in the Country is downsizing, Salisbury, (once again) has to build bigger and better than anyone else. Just look at the new Fire Station 16 that cost the taxpayers some $14,000,000.00 just to build. That doesn't include the new Fire Trucks and so forth.
Libraries do NOT have to be bigger, everyone is now using the Internet. Yet some how, some way, Comegys, Smith & Shields believe this is the right way to go, bigger. While this waterfront property is extremely valuable, the County is laughing all the way to the Bank, then they'll also get it for free.
But wait, there's more.
Remember old Fire Station 16 Downtown? Well it's my understanding that the City is in negotiations with UMES to build a restaurant there. Students in the culinary education would work there to provide food for the public.
While a restaurant would be nice, how about letting someone take the risk of creating one, rather than one that is pretty much fail proof. If they are to allow this to happen, they would shut down the rest of the restaurants Downtown who couldn't compete with free labor and no case as to the cost of food.
The City and County have forgotten where they came from, that's all there is to it. They have taken municipalities and turned them into businesses for their friends. Look Folks, I have been in business for a lot of years and I have done pretty darned good for myself over the years. If you own a business in Salisbury and you think you're going to survive, you're wrong. IF you can get out, do it NOW. I'm being very serious with each and every one of you. The City and County are monopolizing real estate and throwing away your tax dollars like there's no tomorrow, hence the SFD, the Salisbury Zoo, the Library, the Bricks, shall I continue!
You don't have business leadership in the Mayor's Office or the County Executive's Office, (with all due respect). You have politicians who are following the democratic trend that is failing the entire Country. Liberals that want to save the world, tree huggers. You know, all feel good crap to assure no one goes hungry, everyone has health care, welfare, social security to illegals, you name it.
I know, in the worst economy the United States has ever experienced throughout its history, let's go out an buy a $900,000.00 Fire Boat because we have less than a mile of waterfront but the second largest port in Maryland. PLLLLLLEEEEEEASE!
There's no question in my mind that the next elections will truly change the scope of politics and quite frankly I'm not so sure Rick Pollitt is secure in his job either.
The LIBRARY is just fine, leave it be!Quit putting hard working Americans out of business for your own special interests and tell UMES to shove it where the sun doesn't shine.
The library needing to be larger is a joke. People are turning to electronic books and/or recorded books. Take over the whole building since it belongs to them anyway. As far as taking away parking that other businesses use, thats so wrong. Market Street Inn is one of the best places to go downtown.
ReplyDeleteHasn't the city/county given enough property to SU? Now to UMES who isn't even in Salisbury. That's not right.
I hope people are thinking hard right now about running in the next election. It's time to start thinking about it!
Looks to me like they do whatever the hell they want with taxpayer money because they have no fear of repercutions.
ReplyDeleteJoe,
ReplyDeleteI have not agreed with you on a lot of things, but you are dead on with this on. I live in Snow Hill (also own property in Wic.) and can see first hand the impact of taking valuable property off the tax base. It starves a community from any positive development. In addition, the design reminded be of Churchhill Downs, but I guess that is appropriate since all the taxpayers be losing their money there.
When I saw that concept photo for the library in the Daily Times, I thought how stupid an idea is this.
ReplyDeleteThe developers of Rosslyn Virginia connected their buildings with a network of open pedestrian bridges more then 40 years ago. One could use the bridges to walk between the Key Bridge Marriott and Rosslyn metrorail station. When all was said and done they saw little use. Considerable redevelopment has taken place over the years, as a result most of the pedestrian bridges are now gone.
Sand Box John
That's Palmer Gillis's dream, not the library's.
ReplyDeleteImagine the expense to fill the building with books....... now how much is it going to cost to heat and run the a/c in it.
ReplyDeletePretty soon there will only be buildings owned by the county, city, SSU and PRMC. Salisbury will have no one to pay the taxes payers. Maybe once its built they will open it so the homeless can live in it with the way things are going we might need a bigger building
Governments a joke-we have called several different numbers for Labor Board and when someone does actually talk to us they either want to call us back "later" or they have no clue about labor laws.SO HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET A FEDERAL JOB????
ReplyDeleteCan we possibly get a grip on these secret proposals? Can we challenge the power structure which has existed for 4-5 generations?
ReplyDeleteNo.
Watch and be amazed. The end result has been predetermined and you didn't have a say in it. You are not a member of the secret society that controls this town.
Boo hoo.
They laugh when you refer to it as "the good ole boy network". It is so much more than that!
Boo hoo hoo.
The joke's on you.
Excellant article Joe! The people of this town should revolt against all those who hold political offices! They are crooked as Hell & now it's known by most everyone!
ReplyDeleteE.W.
i thought the city & county was so broke they have to cut the budget and are trying to due away with the revenue cap....what a joke they are..but they always seam to have the money for what they want....If they dont want to work for us the tax payers instead of doing what ever they want with NO regard to any consequences then they need to go...they need to remember we gave them a job and we can also fire them for not doing that job and the time has come, they need to be fired.....VOTE THEM ALL OUT! We do need a revolt and it will be here come election day...get rid of all of the crooked bast$^&s.
ReplyDeleteGovernments are broke and cash starved and they still continue to take property out of the tax base. Real elected officials would be looking at downsizing and getting government property back into the tax base, not removing it. It seems that they are brain dead and only know how to do one thing and that is spend money. What does it take to get their attention and let them know that the people do not want more and more cost and more taxes. We would rather have less with less taxes. As far as a library is concerned, if they were a business, they would all be forced to close due to lack of business.
