The State of Maryland cut Corrections Officers pay by 2% and are now going to cut their pay by another whopping 12% total. That's about $350.00 on average for each employee.
Meanwhile they continue to give inmates pay raises, hire more Officers and pay Teachers who are already retired from civilian teaching jobs (double dipping) to give these inmates college educations.
People should be outraged. It is your tax dollars. I know this is happening in Westover but a majority of the Officers live in the Salisbury area.
And then there's the tax and crime burden in Salisbury created by the presence of prisoners' families, who move here to be closer to their men. Believe me, many of them are no angels, either, and it costs us in a lot of ways.
ReplyDeleteWTF? these dirtbags live better than most honest hard working americans that WANT to do well in the world. they're in the freaking jail for a reason....it's supposed to be punishment not a freaking vacation from a real life.
ReplyDeleteWhen I worked at WCDC there wasn't much difference between the inmates and CO's. And a lot of you know what I'm talking about.
ReplyDeleteI have always been against inmate pay, it makes no sense at all to pay someone that's incarcerated, I know it's not much but it adds up to a lot. They are there to be punished, not payed.
ReplyDeleteYou wont collect quality gaurds like this, that prison will be flooded with contraband now.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the 350.00 bi weekly, monthly?? What is the average pay for the employees in question?
ReplyDeleteI am outraged! They keep letting people come in to the USA and take advantage or our programs, without contributing to them, all the time. Why not make them pay taxes? No wonder there will not be any Social Security for anyone to draw when they could retire. In some cases, it's a family history. Just follow the yellow brick road!
ReplyDeleteECI , the largest drug ring and or dealing on the east coast. Prostitution and drugs with the guards and inmates. We know it , the state knows it, the FBI knows it. We have lost , hire a black
ReplyDeleteex-con and lose your a$$.
If 12% of an officer's pay equals $350, that means that the average officer only gets paid about $2800. Are full time jobs paying this, Joe? I doubt it. The math doesn't add up. Maybe you mean $3500 in cuts per worker or their pay is being cut another 1.2%?
ReplyDeleteHere is an idea. No more satellite tv, weight rooms, college and GED classes for inmates. Bread, water, and chain gangs bring them back. Use the death penalty more often. Also use it for anyone caught dealing or trafficking drugs.
ReplyDeletethey are not the only state employees experiencing a pay cut. I lost 2 weeks pay this year. the rest of us state workers have been dealing with this for years. But I agree the state is misguided. inmates should not get education or money. period. that's a whole other discussion. the state can't manage money, just like the feds can't.
ReplyDeleteAnd,
ReplyDeleteDon't get mad when correctional facilities see an increase in inmate on inmate assaults or inmate on security staff assaults. This could happen to one of your family members working and/or incarcerated in these facilities. Correctional Officers are tired of being worked like slaves with constant decrease of pay. The politicians have already under pay us. Now they want to chop away more money from our paycheck. Some of us have household expenses, mortgages and cars to pay for. We have our children to take care of. Now, you want to decrease our pay by 12 percent after a recent pay cut, furloughs and increase of health insurance. And, to top it off, I can't even remember the last time we had a decent pay raise without Blue Cross and Blue Shield eating it ALL up. Citizens in the State of Maryland should be outraged. This is Bull Schitt. This is just another reminder as to why the State of Maryland is still considered a slave state. The State of Maryland "Good Ole BOYS" not responsible thinking men wholeheartedly and truthfully believe in cheap labor.
I don't no about the pay cuts, but I do no that the college education that you think the government is giving inmates is not ture... those programs have also been cut. and inmates make 95 cents a day for doing jobs like working in the kitchen cooking, cleaning, serving I don't think anyone else makes that kind a money for a days work... Please don't believe who ever is feeding you this crap....

ReplyDeletehey back in berlin how about if the co's get tired of it and the inmate or inmates get out and come right backinberlin!!! come knockin on your door beware what u wish for!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo offense, but I kind of concur with Berlin.Theres alot of people out here who would love to have those state jobs and I know people who have worked at ECI who pull in 60k or more BUT this is also a matter of public safety and if you want to keep control you must pay them what they are worth.Instead of pay cuts,go in there and weed out those who dont earn their pay.Government has to learn to maximize staff like private business has had to.
ReplyDeleteWhere are the unions on this?
And Anonynous 3pm,are you insane? The death penalty for drugs?Seriously? The governments war on drugs is what causes all the killing and other crimes associated with drugs.Eliminate the illegality, and you eliminate the thugs from the equation.
Hey 8:29 - I live in Berlin. The best thing that can happen to society is that a few of those inmates you spoke of gets out and comes to visit me at my house. It would be much cheaper for the taxpayers I promise you that.

ReplyDeleteAnnonymous 545pm he was informed by someone who knows what he is talking about. You are obviously related to or were a resident of ECI. You should have taken advantage of the education department, then maybe you would know the difference between NO and KNOW. They do get college educations taught by former professors from UMES and Salisbury University and probably other institutions around the state.
ReplyDelete9:55pm-Couldn't have said it better.
ReplyDeletebackinberlin if you think a corrections officers salary is inflated then maybe you need to step inside ECI just for a day and we will see what you think about inflation then
ReplyDeleteHey Topper I wasn't aware we discussing correct writing skills!!! and for the record I don't know anyone and have never been in ECI.... but I do know those education programs we also cut...... Do you think by talking down to people makes you a better person? try sticking to the subject.

ReplyDeleteThe funny part about all of the arguments is not alot of people posting comments have ever stepped foot in ECI!!! I agree that some of the "dead weight" should be removed off of the payroll. However to make an argument that we yes I said WE are overpaid is stupid. Half or more of you couldnt make it one hour in that place let alone an entire shift. I love my job and feel fortunate to have it. But to say that a 25% paycut is justified is asinine.
ReplyDeleteyou guys talk about these guns lol you wont do anything i can bet on that cause when you get attacked you will not have one on you like at a parking lot or when ur out at a store and maryland well its almost impossible to get a concealed weapon permit and well if you choose to carry one without a permit YOU WILL GO TO JAIL then you will be owned Backinberlin!!!!
ReplyDeleteand also backinberlin be careful about making remarks about your guns your not the only one armed or who has a gun in the usa!!!!!
ReplyDelete3:47
ReplyDeleteI was exaggerating about the 25%. I know that is unreasonable. My point is that there are guards there that aren't qualified to work at McDonalds.
4:18
Maryland law allows for concealed carry. I qualify.
4:25
WHAT????
I need to disengage from this post.
ReplyDeleteexactly back in berlin you do not have a concealed carry permit.....
