MAN CHARGED IN ROCK THROWING ASSAULTS IN CECIL CO.

(North East, MD) – A man throwing rocks at cars in Cecil County Tuesday night and subsequently wounded by a trooper after threatening police officers was released from the hospital last night and has been charged criminally.

The accused is identified as Clyde S. Patterson III, 50, who had been staying at the Perry Point Hospital, a Veteran’s Administration facility in Perry Point, Md. State Police investigators served a warrant last night charging him with six counts of first degree assault, six counts of second degree assault and one count of malicious destruction of property. He was processed at the North East Barracks and, after an appearance before a court commissioner, was incarcerated in the Cecil County Detention Center on $250,000 bond.

Patterson was wounded the night of November 3, 2009, when he threatened police during a confrontation on Rt. 40 near North East. Troopers had been called to the area of Rt. 40 and Red Toad Road where Patterson had been seen throwing large stones at vehicles. Three vehicles were struck and damaged. Patterson told the driver of one of the vehicles he had a gun and showed the gun to the driver.

Patterson threw stones at two of the responding troopers, breaking the window glass on one of the patrol cars. He refused to surrender or show his hand that he kept putting in his pocket, implying he was armed. When he lunged threateningly at one of the troopers, he was shot once in the upper torso.

The Maryland State Police investigation is continuing.
