IS THE OBAMAS’ FAVORITE BURGER PLACE COMING TO SALISBURY?

Since taking up residence in a large house in downtown Washington, DC earlier this year, both Barack and Michelle have made jaunts to partake of the best burger in town, bar none (and, no doubt, some of the best fries around). Now, make that in a couple months, Salisbury may have its very own Five Guys restaurant, and we can all share the wealth.

Seriously, folks, this restaurant is not to be missed. The menu is short and simple – hamburgers and hot dogs, fresh not frozen, and fries cooked in fresh peanut oil (can you say “Thrashers”). The burgers and tube steaks are available with a variety of toppings, along with cheeseburgers, kosher-style dogs, etc. No alcohol is served.

The format was initiated by multiple male siblings whose parents advised them to “start a business or go to college.” They made the correct choice and opened their first Five Guys location, in Arlington, VA, in 1986. Now there are over 450 locations in more than 30 states. They use only fresh ground beef in the burgers – there are no freezers in the locations.

Typically, when Five Guys enters a new market area, it becomes the burger source of choice for the connoisseur. It has been ZAGAT survey rated since 2001. At present, the locations nearest to Salisbury are in Sussex County (Bethany Beach, Lewes and Rehobeth Beach).

Today’s agenda of the Salisbury Planning & Zoning Commission includes site plan review for a “Five Guys” location on South Salisbury Boulevard, which for many denizens of the ‘Bury and SU students should be a convenient alternative to a trip to get a Nathan’s at Sam’s Club. And a location in Ocean City will be opened soon, I understand.

  1. Joe, there IS one over in Ocean City on 65th-66th street and bayside. Personally, I would prefer an In-N-Out around here.

  9. I dare to differ in that the BEST burger at the beach (in my opinion) is the House of Welsh in the Town of Fenwick Island. Big burger, beach fries, and a draft beer cheaper than any combo meal that McDonald's sells and far cheaper than the Five Guys franchise. No sales tax either.

They've been in business for 102 years.

  22. In true obama fashion, does the working man go in and pay for his meal and then they give it to the crack head on the corner?

  23. i love five guys !! pricey but delicious. i hope it comes to salisbury. been going to rehoboth just to get it.

  24. OMG! We have a Five Guys in Lynchburg, VA, and they are AWESOME! Salisbury is in for a real treat, if it doesn't get ruined by the piss-poor labor pool that is in da 'bury!

The burgers are hot and juicy, and the fries are the next best thing to Thrashers. Everything is fresh, and you get UNLIMITED toppings for your burger!

    Enjoy, Salisbury!

  29. It must be nice to have all of this money to eat out. I thought Salisbury was in a recession. How do you afford to eat out so much?

  30. Red Robin, we need one of them next...Yummmmm. Five Guys is really good as well.

  31. 5 guys is not overpriced at all. It's cheaper than hardee's... The loaded burger is huge for less than $6 and worth every penny. Also, the "regular" size fries is more than enough for 2 people to split. So 2 people can stuff themselves for less than $15. Its certainly not the $1 menu, but its a much more quality product.
