First Congressional District Voters Want Change
The Tarrance Group polled likely voters this week in the First
Congressional District of Maryland for the Andy Harris for Congress
campaign. The results show that 52% of the likely voters would vote
for Andy Harris, 39% for the incumbent Congressman, Frank Kratovil.
"These results reflect what I've been hearing from hard-working,
tax-paying families throughout the First District over the last year.
Voters are upset with a Congressman and a Democrat-controlled Congress
run by Nancy Pelosi that spends too much, taxes too much, and can't
bring the unemployment rate down. They want real change in 2010 -
returning fiscal sanity to Washington and jobs to the First District
of Maryland" said Andy Harris, a Republican running for Congress in
the First District.

MEMORANDUM
TO: SEN. ANDY HARRIS
FROM: BRIAN C. TRINGALI
KEVIN HUDAK
RE: FRANK KRATOVIL NOT LIKELY TO RETURN TO CONGRESS
DATE: NOVEMBER 19, 2009
______________________________________________________________________________
The Tarrance Group is pleased to present the following findings from our latest survey of voters across Maryland’s First Congressional District. The Andy Harry for U.S. Congress campaign commissioned The Tarrance Group to conduct a telephone survey of N=300 “likely” voters throughout the district. A random sample of this type is likely to yield a margin of error of +5.8% in 95 out of 100 cases. Responses to the survey were gathered November 15-17 – although few respondents were called on Monday because of a Ravens game that evening.
Incumbent Democrat Congressman Frank Kratovil is not likely to be a part of the next Congress once it is convened in 2011. Kratovil has had a tough time of it since his election to the open seat last year. The evidence of this is borne out by our most recent survey of Maryland’s First Congressional District.
Despite his close loss in 2008, if the election for U.S. Congress were held today, Andy Harris would be elected with a clear majority of the vote. Fifty-two percent (52%) of the voters are supportive of Harris, even before the race has heated up. Kratovil garners just 39% of the vote today.
At the same time, 88% of the voters have heard of Andy Harris – in part because of his previous campaign in 2008. In addition, Dr. Harris has been working hard already this cycle and has clearly benefitted from his early start on the 2010 contest.
Ballot for U.S. Congress
Andy Harris 52%
Undecided 10%
Frank Kratovil 39%
Frank Kratovil’s weakness in this district might seem startling but it is backed up by a poor image and a low re-elect score. While Kratovil is well known, only 43% of the voters hold a favorable image and 30% are unfavorable toward him. At a 91% awareness level, most of the voters have formed an opinion of the incumbent.
Kratovil Image
Aware 91%
Favorable 43%
Unfavorable 30%
Ratio 1.5:1
The soft re-elect question asks if Frank Kratovil “deserves to be re-elected or if it is time to give a new person a chance.” Only 29% of the voters in this district think the incumbent deserves to be re-elected. Further, 49% of the voters think a new person would do the better job. This reelect score is extremely low. Again, voters in the district seem to have already made up their minds that they will not be returning Frank Kratovil to Congress.
Kratovil Soft Re-elect
Deserves re-election 29%
Unsure/depends 23%
New person 49%

10% undecided with a 5% margin of error? Yeah, real accurate poll you got there.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big Andy Harris fan. BUT, unless a miracle 3rd party is formed with a viable candidate, I don't see me putting Frank Kratovil back in, as he's already voted for cap and trade, if he goes along w/ the CBO estimates of the health care program. Waaaay too many variables left open-ended for future modifications to predict the costs. Good idea, wrong bill.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it so hard for these Congressmen to understand what the people want. We want them to stop spending our money. Lower our taxes. Help our small businesses get back on their feet and the jobs will follow. It is not hard to understand that. JOBS!!! Jobs will bring us out of our slump. No, not Obama stimulus jobs. I mean real tax reform for small business. Let them get on their feet adn begin hiring people again. That in turn will get people on their feet adn begin to have some money in their pockets. You will not have to raise taxes. The math is simple. More people working means more taxes collected. And insurance. Yes, we need health insurance reform. not the crap that out Congress is working on. Start small with the insurance companies. Work from there. This is not rocket science. I guess the first thing you need to do is get some people in office with the testicular fortitude to work for their people not for their own pockets.

To 12:43 -- those numbers aren't an indication of any inaccuracy. That's how polls work. There are always a good number of undecided a year before an election and the margin of error isn't all that big. You might be able to attack this since it's put out by Harris's campaign (or so it seems). However, if Kratovil had better polling numbers than these we should expect to see him release them soon. If we don't we can probably assume that Kratovil's campaign is receiving much the same information through their pollster.
ReplyDeleteFrank's in big trouble next year, that's for sure.
He should have voted for health care reform, now he has both sides disgusted with him. He cannot handle the job he was elected to do.
ReplyDeleteI'm a conservative democrat(registered) who voted for Andy Harris but I'm not a fan. Mostly because he doesn't live on the shore and I don't think he cares for the shore as much. The first district should be from Kent county and down. If Kratovil continues to sell his vote to Pelosi like he did when he voted for the cap-in-trade he will not get my vote or my fathers. My father voted for Kratovil. But if he stands strong against pelosi and the out of control liberals he will get my vote. I personally would much rather see a conservative republican from the shore run instead of Harris. Kratovil also wont get the first time voters who showed up to the polls just to vote for Obama and put a check next to a democrat.
ReplyDeleteAndy Harris is a pompous a**!
ReplyDeleteI think the Eastern Shore needs to succeed for the rest of Maryland.
ReplyDeleteSucceed? Seriously, try secede.
ReplyDeleteDogg,
ReplyDeleteTo understand why they are doing what they are doing in washington, one only has to keep in mind what drives ALL new laws and legislation.
The first question any Democrat asks when beginning to craft a new law is:
How will this help me get re-elected, and how can I personaly profit from this?
Nowhere does "How will this help the country?" ever enter into the equation
I voted for Andy Harris and will gladly do so again.
ReplyDeleteThey (along with the rest of our great Country) wanted change in the last election. What did they (we) get? More of the same.
ReplyDeleteMore bailouts for the big banks.
More fraud - AIG bailouts were paid directly to foreign banks along with Goldmann Sachs, JP Morgan, etc.
Criminals in high places - our appointed officials are criminals, admittedly! This is outrageous.
More unemployment - it is much worse than Obama et al promised.
More wars - wars have become peace, lies are truth. Our President was given a peace medal for expanding the Afghanistan war and continuing the murders in Iraq. We have multiple appointed officials making decisions about foreign policy who have DUAL CITIZENSHIP! What is happening? Our Country has become ZION!
Both political parties are controlled by an elite financial banking cartel who have made plans years in advance to destroy our economy and merge us into a global government with a new global currency. We are in very deep down the rabbit hole.
Met Mr. Harris recently and was very impressed with him. I hope he makes it this time around.
ReplyDeleteDid they poll Chris Lewis?
ReplyDeleteHe could be a viable alternative.
I doubt this will make it up. Joe's in the tank for Andy.
Chris who???? You mean the guy who thinks he's a viable 3rd party candidate...good luck with that buddy.
ReplyDelete2010. Real Hope for Real Change.
ReplyDelete"Frank Kratovil “deserves to be re-elected or if it is time to give a new person a chance""
ReplyDeleteThe above is a poorly formulated question if the surveyor wishes to generate unbiased results. It is, in my opinion, unevenly balanced.
The same people running as a few years back, real change there. Hopefully the Conservative Party will make a difference here in Maryland.
ReplyDeleteHow about getting a regular American to run, not a career politician.
ReplyDeleteI want someone in office who will go by the Constitution and represent the people and not their own self interests.
ReplyDeleteKratovil screwed himself by voting against health care reform. I know a lot of you Republicans agree with that vote, but you're still not going to vote for him. Now his base is pissed and they will either go for someone else in the primary or stay home altogether. Bad move politically on his part.
ReplyDelete9:12 - That's what I'm sayin'.
ReplyDeleteCareer politicians have screwed us every way they could, just to benefit themselves. Dumbocrats and Redumblicans alike, theres not much difference. They're out to get re-elected and amass the most power and money they can while in office and to hell with us "little people". I'm tired of the "ruling class" being the only ones that can hold office. Let's try some regular folk for a while.
