Allan Webster BIG Day … and Jim Ireton’s Disgrace

Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton offered so much promise when he ran for office less than one year ago. For starters, he wasn’t Barrie Tilghman or one of her acolytes. Second, he promised a more open, transparent regime than his predecessor.

Hope and Change. Like his hero, Barack Obama, Ireton promised “a different kind of politics”. Like his hero, we are seeing a meaner, nastier version of the same old thing. Like his hero, Ireton smiles (while doing nothing) and his goose stepping general staff grind a hob nailed boot into the face of freedom loving citizens.

Hyperbole? Not much.

When Jim Ireton ran for mayor I remember him stating (at his announcement or a debate, I’m not exactly sure) behavior like excluding citizens from press conferences wouldn’t be tolerated under a Mayor Jim Ireton. On Wednesday, Salisbury Police Chief Allan Webster made a LIAR out of Jim Ireton. That would be sad enough except that Webster has already made a fool out of the man who claims to be his boss.

SMASH THE PRESSES

On Wednesday, the Salisbury Police Department held a press conference. SbyNEWS publisher Joe Albero showed up. Webster had Albero ejected from the premises.

Don’t like Joe Albero? That’s fine. Now ask yourself if you honestly believe that Webster, or any other civil servant, should have the right to eject ANY taxpaying citizen from a PUBLIC facility? Given that this citizen had not caused a disturbance, if you honestly believe that Webster has a right to eject that citizen I would submit that you are as much of a JACK BOOTED THUG as Allan Webster apparently is.

Want to claim that Albero isn’t a legitimate member of the press? That’s fine. Guess what? Neither you NOR Allan Webster get to make that call. Press credentials are given out by certain governmental organizations because of limits of space and for identification purposes. Only fascist fools like Webster, Barrie Tilghman, and certain members of the Obama administration believe that THEY get to determine what constitutes journalism.

Personally I don’t really care whether or not Joe Albero, or anyone else, attends a press conference at the SPD headquarters. However, to deny ANY CITIZEN their RIGHT to attend sets a dangerous precedent. We expect this type of behavior in China, Venezuela, Cuba, or Iran. We don’t expect this in the United States. We definitely should not accept it. Yet, to the best of my knowledge Allan Webster is still on the taxpayers’ dime as this goes to post. SHAME ON JIM IRETON!

LIAR, LIAR

Such behavior would be bad enough for one day (even a year). However, Allan Webster doesn’t appear content to limit bad actions to only one a day.

On the same day, at a Chamber of Commerce function, Allan Webster stood up and verbally attacked Mark McIver. McIver, a civic leader and member of the city’s Crime Task Force was discussing the impact of certain practices of the Eastern Correctional Institution and its impact on crime in Salisbury.

Webster is reported to have verbally attacked McIver; pointing a finger at him and stating that McIver didn’t know what he was talking about and that everything he said was a lie.

This would be shameful conduct from an ordinary citizen. However, Webster is supposed to be the chief law enforcement officer in the city of Salisbury. He is supposed to be one of the leaders of Salisbury’s government. Such conduct is a disgrace. Yet, to the best of my knowledge, Allan Webster is still an employee of the city of Salisbury. SHAME ON JIM IRETON!

DANGER … AND DISGRACE

In many ways I actually feel sorry for Ireton. He has placed himself in a position where the city is being run by the very people he claimed to be running against as a candidate. Jim may have a talent for cutting ribbons and pressing the flesh down on Main Street, but Salisbury is actually worse than the day he was sworn in to office.

Salisbury suffers one of the worse crime rates (per capita) in the nation. If I were the chief of police, I would hide my head in shame. While the area’s other leading law enforcement officials have come together with elected officials and civic minded citizens to tackle a tough problem, Webster appears to believe that he is simply too important to sit down and work to solve a serious problem.

Instead, Webster spends his time attacking citizens (like McIver) who work to help solve the city’s greatest problem. Instead, Webster expends scarce police resources to attack Councilwoman Debbie Campbell. Instead, Webster openly defies the duly elected Mayor of Salisbury. Instead, Webster sues the city.

Law abiding, liberty loving citizens should actually be frightened. You have a Police Chief who has literally “gone rogue” – verbally attacking citizens, trampling the basic liberties of others, and openly defying his lawful superior. Add to the mix that this man possesses a badge and a gun. Even more frightening – what type of example is he setting for the officers under his command?

Yet, Webster retains his badge. Yet, he retains his gun. Yet, he still draws a paycheck at the expense of those that he appears to hold in utter contempt. SHAME ON JIM IRETON!

It would be easy to say that Allan Webster has disgraced Jim Ireton. Sadly, Ireton has disgraced himself. Ireton claims that “he can’t do anything”. Ireton claims that only the city council can dismiss Webster. I would beg to differ.

Ireton can dismiss Webster “for cause”. BEFORE Webster attacked our basic liberties, BEFORE he verbally assaulted a citizen, BEFORE he publicly defied and ridiculed the office of the Mayor, Ireton had ample cause. Simply look at Salisbury’s crime rate! No one is blaming Salisbury’s rank and file police officers. They simply deserve better leadership (and better funding).

However, SINCE Webster attacked our basic liberties, SINCE he verbally assaulted a citizen, SINCE he publicly defied and ridiculed the office of the Mayor, I would have a hard time imagining even the Barrie Comegys bloc of Gary Comegys, Louise Smith, and Shanie Shields (well, maybe Shanie) arguing that Ireton doesn’t have ample cause to fire Webster. Even if they did, the onus would then be on THEM. Let Gary Comegys take responsibility for the next assault. Let Louise Smith take responsibility for the next rape. Let Shanie Shields take responsibility for the next robbery. Let them all be held accountable for the next homicide.

Sadly, Ireton appears to lack the stomach (or stones) to actually face down this problem. Jim ran for the office. The people chose to elect him because he pledged to “Speak Truth to Power” (whatever that means). Now, Ireton either needs to resign or understand that this is HIS PROBLEM. Barrie’s gone. He refuses to take control of his office or his rogue police chief. I’m sorry Jim -

THE NEXT MURDER IS ON YOU!

  1. Excellent reporting and very good writing.

This tells me that we do not seem to have the power we once thought we weilded with the power of the vote.

We have tried unsucessfully to change the nature (and people) of our local government.

We have failed to root the power mongers from their position.

Is it possible to get control of this city?

  2. Very good post G.A. and 9:28 AM, I would like to know the same, is it possible to get control again and if so, how, when? Ireton you should be soooooo ashamed of yourself.

  3. Joe Albero isn't a resident of Salisbury.

  4. Joe Albero OWNS 300 W. Main Street in Downtown Salisbury. I am a taxpayer within the City of Salisbury and I have ever right to be there. I do NOT have to be a resident. Oh, by the way Idiot, Webster doesn't reside here either!

  5. This is just unbelievable! When is this going to end and real work get done? Our city/county are going to hell. This is not all, 2 weeks ago the ER (same night) had 4 rape victims, 2 of which were 15 years old. All incidences were unrelated!!!!!! Why weren't these reported? Then Bennett and only half the story was told there. School bus drivers being held at gun point.

And Mr. McIver is attacked by our Chief, you are kidding. This makes us the laughing stock.

ECI dumps ex cons here because we get money to rehab them. NOT WORKING, what is wrong with these people?

  6. Being a "come here" I have the benefit of comparing the actions of the Salisbury Police Dept. to the Baltimore County Police Dept. where an immediate family member works. We are a laughing stock. He takes Salisbury stories and uses them in meetings to laugh at what the idiots on the shore are up to. When I first came here several years ago I tried to get my relative to recruit some great officers to come to the shore. The response was just intense laughter.
Webster is spanking every citizen in Salisbury and knows that no one has the stones to do a damn thing about it. Wussies!!!!!

Ireton is sinking in the muck that is our City--pull yourself up, Jimbo, and get rid of Webster and others on the City payroll who are not doing their jobs.

  10. Mayor Ireton
I beg you to uphold your promises and make our city a safer place. Crime is on the rise at an alarming rate and our citizens are truly scared. The restrictions on an incoming Mayor msut be difficult with the red tape of the government. This council with the exception of Ms. Cohen and Campbell believe that all is well and the chief should be left alone. You may not be able to fire the chief, but you can dictate your expectations and performance measures. There is more than one way to skin a cat and this is solid. The chief is slick and manipulative and thus far elusive in being held accountable for poor crime management. Please tighten your expectations and there will be little room for slick willy to slither out. This citizen has no faith in our police chief or his crime prevention.

  12. If all the politicians in this town are so smart go buy some land and start your own town and see how many people would move there. These few small minded people are making lasting decisions for all of us. If you want to go waste a lot of money go use your own stop wasting all of ours. Unfortunately when we vote for the "change candidate" when don't get any change The biggest money saving change would be for wicomico county and city of salisbury services become one unit now that would be efficient. Was does a town of Salisbury's size need 5 city council members a mayor a county excutive and 7 county council members yes I know not all county coucil members are from salisbury but most are. That is way to many people trying to spend the same tax base. The arrogance of the political leaders in our community is like nothing i have ever witnessed,I guess they see what Obama is doing and think they can do it as well. I feel sorry for my kids and grandkids lord only knows what troubles they will have because of the poor decisions being made now!

  16. Mr. Mciver despite some differnce of apporach is one of the most ethical and outstanding individuals in this County. Verbally abusing him because he is vocal about our crime problems, is disgraceful and uncalled for.
Allan Webster needs to issue an immediate public appology.

    Show him the door Mayor.

However, there is no will to change anything in Salisbury. Some people just want the status quo to continue and Webster serves their purpose, for now.

  25. Webster and Ireton owe a huge apology to McIver. This is absolutely disgusting. McIver, tax paying / private citizen, taking is time to actually care and this is the thanks he gets. He has no private agenda, clearly the chief and mayor do!

These actions and the behavior of our elected officials are waking up a lot of people. We are sick of it!

What helped start this blog a few years ago, citizens standing up, is going to be bigger and uglier this round if they don't do something immediately.

Jim I supported you this election but you are becoming a huge disappointment. Screw the Democratic party and do what is right for YOUR citizens.

  27. Impeachment.... External investigation into the chiefs conduct and handling of cases... How about giving him a taste of his own medicine...Instead of crying for the "mayor" (such a label that many hold yet do not deserve) to make a change get rid of his butt. He works for Salisbury Salisbury does not work for him! The chief doesn't want to do his job make it known to all that will listen in the positions to make a change, if ole Jim Bob is sitting on his butt twiddling his thumbs skip him and go to the next in line. If Salisbury would get together and raise holy cain people in major areas and in higher titles WILL listen. You want change it is apparent you must go beyond Salisbury because Salisbury officials can't decide what to have for dinner much less make an executive decision to benefit the people of Salisbury.... Sorry but come on people work the system and cause a stir.

  28. Joe, it seems the Chief may have exceeded his authority in not allowing you to be present. A written formal complaint to the Mayor and City Council would be appropriate. This should provide the impetus for a written reprimand at minimum or a suspension with loss of pay at a maximum.

This action could be recommended by the Mayor and ratified by the Council.

In the opinion of many, this violation of a citizen's right borders on a violation of law and is very serious.

By the way, I was also present at the Chamber of Commerce Crime Task Force meeting. The Chief's response to Mr. McIver was very unprofessional, dismissive and defensive. The manner of his response was very disturbing and allowed me to witness for the first time his demonstrating a lack of character and good leadership traits.

  31. Hate to burst your bubble Joe, but just because it's a public building that doesn't mean that the public has unrestricted access. As long as Webster holds the title of "Chief", he is within his rights to restrict access as he sees fit.

You didn't witness the incident, BUT The cops act stupidly. Is that about right.
Chief Webster has the same rights as every other United States citizen. He is innocent until proven guilty; he has the right to sue for violations of his rights; and he has the right to defend himself from hearsay spread by cheap shot artists.

    How much does Mayor pay?

How much does City Council pay?

In this economy are you telling me that some local businessman doesn't want to run the show.

  40. McIver deserves better, much better - where did the tip come from on the bankrobber from Crime Tips, who manages the tips/rewards, Mark McIver!

And if Mark is giving out wrong info, perhaps it is because he sends Tyler to the Crime Task Force meetings and he offers nothing, says nothing. If McIver and the Crime Task Force do not know, its because our SPD refuses to tell them anything, and if that is not insubordination to the Mayor and the Mayor's task force, what is ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  41. The mayor is a book worm with no nutt sack. We will have to face the up coming years with BS coming from both. Webster is an IA cop, alway has and always will be. Mayor is a hand shaking, ribbon cutting suit wearing book worm with no nutts. Salisbury is for trash with suits.

  45. Just wait a little longer. Ireton will run like a whipped dog with his tail between his legs. He does not have any gonads between them. He will quit just like he did on the city council. I said it when he was running for office and i say it now. Joe weren't you backing Jim in the election. I told you then you would be after him in a short time. You have no loyalty to any one.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Its obvious Ireton is in over his head. He has no idea what to do, so naturally he can be bullied around. He has no sense of direction and no say with the council that represents Salisbury. They do as they please and dare anybody to do anything about it. The bad part is this..they are being paid by taxpayer money. And that my friends is hard to swallow.

  47. Shame is Irton will not read your blog which is the truth. The man does not have a clue and we are a laughing stock in the state. A teacher and part time mayor running a multi-million $ business (the city of Salisbury) with a little trouble with the truth . (Personal experience). He is destroying Salisbury with his lack of leadership. The only thing Webster will have happen is you will be stalked, raped, robbed or murded while he is suing the city.
