It's going to be another Red October baby! Go Phillies!
Like I always say I love the O's (even if they can't get it together, I'm still loyal) and anybody that beats the Yankees!
I do agree with 9:52 AM, there should be some sort of team salary cap - Look at the 2009 payrolls here: MLB Team Payroll
The Yankees payroll is 3 times that of the O's and I would certainly expect them to be incredibly better. Prime example: Mark Teixeira-why would he sign with the O's when the Yankees can buy his talent for $180 MILLION over 8 years? That kind of money would cover the O's entire salary for nearly 3 seasons! The average player on the Yankees 40 man roster gets paid over $5million per year...JUST TO PLAY A GAME! Now I was a great baseball player and played 4 years of D-1 college ball, but it wouldn't take much more than $50,000 per year to get me to do what I love to do professionally. I feel that if the MLB put a ceiling on team salary it would prevent "superstar" teams from happening. It would make the season a lot closer and more exciting.
I do respect the talent of these great ball players, even the talent of those on the Yankees' roster, but I don't respect teams that purchase the talent and make teams without the payroll suffer. People say "well maybe if the O's had a winning record then they would bring in more money to buy players." The O's obviously have hugh management problems, but how do you expect to get wins when 2 of the high paid teams are in you division?
I have a tremendous amount of respect for teams like the Rockies, Rangers and even the Marlins who all have about a third of the salary that the Yanks have, but can still put a season together. The have excellent farm systems (Texas' Florida Minor League team is where Teixeira came from) and are able to develop their own players.
Like Anon 10:07 AM said, "It's called business." He's absolutely right and it defends my #1 argument about the Yankees! The Yankees have "employees" on the team and not players-if you were to reduce their salary, I guarantee that half of them would quit and/or lead the next strike.
Screw the Yanks-runner up in the World Series just means that you are second to last to pick next year...oops...I forgot that they don't need to pick, they'll just buy whoever they need. Isn't it illegal to buy and sell humans?
Anon 10:07. Agreed, but sad. It would be interesting to see what happened if every team had the same salary cap. Remember when they used to play for the love of the game?
I could care less!!! who wins or plays! I don't care to watch spoiled arrogant millionares. Baseball along with ALL sports have gotten isn't worth the time to watch, especially with all the issues that face this world and country.
The Phillies! All the way! :-)

ReplyDeleteCan't stand the steinbrenner family - Go Phillies.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I hate the fact that the O's are owned by Angelos. It seems like he actually does everything he can to hurt the team.
