The Race Card, Football And Me

My critics would have you believe no conservative meets NFL 'standards.'

David Checketts, an investor and owner of sports teams, approached me in late May about investing in the St. Louis Rams football franchise. As a football fan, I was intrigued. I invited him to my home where we discussed it further. Even after informing him that some people might try to make an issue of my participation, Mr. Checketts said he didn't much care. I accepted his offer.

It didn't take long before my name was selectively leaked to the media as part of the Checketts investment group. Shortly thereafter, the media elicited comments from the likes of Al Sharpton. In 1998 Mr. Sharpton was found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay $65,000 for falsely accusing a New York prosecutor of rape in the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. He also played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews "diamond merchants") and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot.

Not to be outdone, Jesse Jackson, whose history includes anti-Semitic speech (in 1984 he referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" in a Washington Post interview) chimed in. He found me unfit to be associated with the NFL. I was too divisive and worse. I was accused of once supporting slavery and having praised Martin Luther King Jr.'s murderer, James Earl Ray.

Next came writers in the sports world, like the Washington Post's Michael Wilbon. He wrote this gem earlier this week: "I'm not going to try and give specific examples of things Limbaugh has said over the years because I screwed up already doing that, repeating a quote attributed to Limbaugh (about slavery) which he has told me he simply did not say and does not reflect his feelings. I take him at his word. . . . "

  1. Who from the African - American community will step up and say enough of this race baiting sorry Mr. Limbaugh I may disagree with your politics but racism is another issue that has nothing to do with you ! Is there any integrity in that community ? lets see...

  2. Yeah. Who said Rush is racist. We all know that when he called Obama a halfrican-American he meant it in the nicest way possible.

Tell me why I am supposed to feel sorry for a fat, boisterous millionaire not getting a new toy?

  3. Al Sharpton said Rush was offensive and a racist. This is the pot calling the kettle black (no racial undertones intended)-a professional racist calling someone else a racist. I guess it's OK for him because he's a professional. Personally, I find the "reverend" offensive. I guess that makes me a racist too. There was a time when I didn't look at the color of someone's skin, but when I see the two "reverends" (three including Jeremiah Wright) constantly spilling their hatred, it makes me rethink things. Profession racism is a very lucrative busines-they are all millionaires. It makes me sick and gives the black community a bad name. Like 9:04 said - someone with some integrity needs to stand up and say "enough is enough".

  4. one woman owner, one team owned by muscic artists and the rest owned by? white men?
    so who's the real racists?
yes, drive drunk and kill people, beat your wife, shoot up nightclubs, kill dogs, but rush would bring to much controversy?
    what a hoot!

  5. 9:34 is the phrase halfrican - American a racist comment NO! and that's even if he said it he has been lied on by your leaders Rev-Al and Jesse Jackass . Maybe your over sensitive or a race baiter yourself ! So is it only blacks that get free speech in your fantasy world or everybody but White men ?

  6. 1) Rush equates blacks with being lazy, nonproductive citizens looking for government handouts on a almost daily basis on his show. Why would a league composed of largely black players want him as a boss?

    2) The NFL is a private business. If they don't want Rush's patronage then he should go start his own league and stop whining.

  7. 12:16 Rush from his own words " my belief in a colorblind society where every individual is treated as a precious human being without regard to his race? Where football players should earn as much as they can and keep as much as they can, regardless of race? Those controversial racial views? " .As far as the NFL they allow Michael Vick and countless other criminals in but not Rush ? That my friend is discrimination ! Oh yea and the person leading the charge is The NFL players union boss, DeMaurice Smith. A Washington criminal defense lawyer, Democratic Party supporter and Barack Obama donor . Maybe before you comment on an article you should read it ! If you can you RACIST !

  8. 3:02, you can quote Rush's words from one article. I'm speaking of words he has repeatedly spoke for years on his show. Sorry I don't have the selective hearing of an idealogue.

If you don't like who the NFL lets in/doesn't let in, then you can also stop watching or supporting the league in any way.

  9. Apparently you don't have the proof he said anything either ! Like I said your a race baiter and a slanderer. In fact your too lazy to even make up something racist and claim that he said it! you say he says things how pathetic is that. Do you have a problem with white people ?

  10. As far as the last part of your statement that's the equivalent of saying if you don't like America go back to Africa your full of crap !

  11. Hey 3:38 I guess you also missed his best friend an ex NFL player come to Rush's defense oh did I mention that he is a reverend AND BLACK !

  12. This forum just goes to show how despicable it is to make the false charge of racism. Once you have done so even when presented with contradictory proof people have it branded in their brain for good. And is why the false accusation of racism should be added to hate crime legislation and strictly enforced.
we could call it " The Limbaugh Law "

Maybe because of racist wealth envy? How much of his money did he get by taking it from you? None, and you damn well know it. It speaks really well of you that you don't comdemn two of the biggest and most racist publicity whores ever known, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (who is no skinny-minnie himself, not that that has anything to do with anything).

  15. Rush Limbaugh has a 20% approval rating. The rest of the country hates him. Even the people that listen to him every day aren't going to boycott their Sunday tailgate party because he tells them to. Show up at a healthcare town hall and yell a lot? Sure. But miss a football game? He just isn't that important.
