Pet Bear Mauls Owner To Death

ROSS TWP., Pa. - October 5, 2009 -- Authorities in northeastern Pennsylvania say a woman was killed by her pet black bear as she cleaned its cage.

State police say 37-year-old Kelly Ann Walz, Ross Township in Monroe County, was mauled to death Sunday evening by the 350-pound bear.
A state Game Commission spokesman says Walz kept the bear inside a 15-by-15 foot steel and concrete cage near her house.

  1. I would think a 350 pound black bear is a poor choice for a "pet." I'll stick with my cat and Chinese water dragon, thank you!

  4. It's just further proof that no matter how much people think a wild animal is "domesticated", it's just not that simple.

  8. Black bears dont eat meat. The woman could of been ovulating and the bear(female) saw her as a threat.

  9. A 350 lb black bear eats pretty much whatever it wants :-).....the victim made a very basic mistake in that she did not seperate herself from the bear with a secure enclosure.

  11. Wild animals should never be allowed to be kept in a cage or sold! That is only asking for TROUBLE!!!
No animal should ever be kept in a cage for that matter !
Mans greed for profit keeps this business flourishing & it will continue to do so till POLITITIONS CHANGE THE LAWS!!! Wait till one excapes & kills one of their own----then you'll see LAWS CHNAGED! The bear was not at fault-----Greed & lack of Laws for their protection was!!!

  12. No Animal is ment to be caged! And----The LAW should NOT ALLOW THE SALE OR KEEPING OF "WILD ANIMALS". No person in their right mind would want to keep a wild animal caged , for their pet. Greed from the profit of selling these exotic creatures keeps that business flourishing & it will continue to--- unless the Politions pass the Laws to STOP IT!!!!
Hey ----- If I was kept in a cage--I'd want to kill too!
