FBI: Gunshots Hit US Rep. DeFazio's Office Windows

Three shots fired at a federal courthouse in Oregon late Wednesday or early Thursday hit windows in U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio's office, while a fourth shot hit a wall above the office, the FBI said.

No one was in the second-floor office at the time, and the Democratic congressman's staffers in Eugene found the damage when they arrived for work Thursday morning.

Investigators believe the shots were fired between 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said, adding they're not certain that DeFazio's office was the intended target.

"Right now, our biggest concern is determining why this happened," Steele said, adding the FBI doesn't know whether the shooter or shooters were trying to hurt anyone. "We're obviously taking this very seriously."

DeFazio spokeswoman Molly Simmons confirmed the congressman was in Washington, D.C., at the time.

The Register-Guard reported that from outside the courthouse, the only visible damage to DeFazio's office was to one window that had a single, quarter-sized hole with cracks spidering outward.

No details were released about the type of ammunition used.

The courthouse was open for business as usual Thursday.

The FBI is working with the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Protective Service and Eugene police.

  1. Im affraid this wont be the last time something like this happens. This is the result of the failure of political dicourse in the US. Both sides are guilty of this. People in this country need to hear a few key words and thats it end of discussion aka. religion, abortion.. socialism.. people become blind to the facts and just become filled with fear and hate toward the other side. You have people on tv from both sides fueling this hate. Im going to use beck as an example becuse I watched the show last night and it applies but there are people on other channels that do just the same kind of thing.

Last nights show beck talked about revolutionary people, saying we have to be with the founders or the new radical revolutionaries. He said we had to stand up and fight back and you have to take a side or the US will be forever changed. Now im not attacking his argument just the way he presents it. This whole us vs them, fight for your right, be a revolutionary against the radical government, be like the founding fathers. However, the us revolution didnt happen by voting in other people or protests, it happened at the barrel of a gun, becuse we did not have a say in elections.

Now this brings us to this article. When you tell people to become a revolutionary and fight the radicals while channeling the founding fathers and the american revolution you run into people who can not or refuse to think through your statements of hate and fear. Most people know when Beck says what he does he is not advocating an armed revolt like the founders but instead a revolt in the elections and in protests, but some people can not.

  3. When you radically try to change a whole country what the hell do you expect ! I'm not saying I agree or endorse these actions but I do understand the fear and frustration from Americans who are tired of a government not protecting them and their rights !

  5. This may be the start of it all. You know guerilla hit and run tactics are the beginning. They usually increase in number and intensity until they are on the news everyday. I saw somewhere earlier today that a liberal newscaster had shots fired at his house as well. Guerilla warfare is what won the American Revolution. Will history repeat itself?

  6. The fact that the shots were fired at night and the office was at "business as usual" the next morning says it all. This was a warning shot "across the bow" saying start listening, or the next time it may happen when you are here. At least that's how I read it. It's a shame that our "representatives" refuse to respect the Constitution and follow those who want to destroy our form of government. It could all be so simple.

  7. Everyone should be concerned about this. Especially conservatives who claim to be the party of patriotism and national security. Random shootings at government buildings is a terrorist act; not guerilla tactics or revolutionaries standing up.

Where can you find countries where random violent attacks are used to pressur the government? Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq just to name a few.

  8. 7:50 I would say that if this were 1776 you would be calling the colonial revolutionaries "terrorists" as well. Just imagine where we'd be if those people were too yellow to stand up for the cause of freedom and liberty.
