The sound of Salvation Army bell ringers provides a familiar musical prelude to the holiday season. This year, another type of music will be part of The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign. A community choir, the “Kettle Choir”, is being formed to sing at the second annual “Blessing of the Kettles” service on Saturday evening, Nov. 14th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Adult singers are encouraged to join and share their voices and talents for this inspirational “kick-off” to the bell ringing season.
This year marks the 95th year of the Salisbury Red Kettle Campaign. Funds raised through the kettles enable The Salvation Army to help thousands of individuals not only at Christmas, but throughout the year. The Corps particularly wants to see that no one goes cold, hungry or without knowing the joy of Christmas. With the requests for services continuing to rise, a successful Red Kettle Campaign is critical for the local Corps to continue “doing the most good” for those who need it the most.
“Now, more than ever, community involvement is needed,” said Captain Cameron Henderson, Salisbury Corps Officer. “It is not just the community’s help that we need; we need God’s blessing for this campaign to be successful. The Blessing of the Kettles is our way of asking for His strength and guidance as we do His work.”

The Blessing of the Kettles service will be a time of music, of prayer, of scripture and of celebration. The Salvation Army is asking the community to come together and be part of this event by taking part in the Kettle Choir. Under the direction of Mae Higgins, music coordinator of Providence Presbyterian Church, the Kettle Choir will provide the musical backdrop for the service.
“I am so excited that the community has the opportunity to take part in this service”, said Higgins. “There is nothing more inspiring that hearing voices joined together honoring God with song. It is my hope that many from our community will take part”.
Four rehearsals are scheduled, but choir members only need to attend three of the four. The dates are: Mondays, October 12th and October 26th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays, November 1st and 8th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. If needed, a final rehearsal is tentatively planned for Friday, November 13th at 7 p.m. All rehearsals will take place at Providence Presbyterian Church, 311 Parker Road, Salisbury.
The service will be open to the public. Attendees are requested to bring a canned good for The Salvation Army Food Pantry. A freewill offering will also be held during the service.

think we will see Webster ringing a bell this year?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! It will be so great to get a large group of singers together. I hope all churches have some choir members sign up.
