Obama Open To Newspaper Bailout Bill

The president said he is "happy to look at" bills before Congress that would give struggling news organizations tax breaks if they were to restructure as nonprofit businesses."

I haven't seen detailed proposals yet, but I'll be happy to look at them," Obama told the editors of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade in an interview.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) has introduced S. 673, the so-called "Newspaper Revitalization Act," that would give outlets tax deals if they were to restructure as 501(c)(3) corporations. That bill has so far attracted one cosponsor, Cardin's Maryland colleague Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D).

  2. What a waste. The only thing a newspaper is good for is covering the table to eat crabs on.

  3. Being "open to it" or "be happy to look" is far from giving support to the proposal

  4. I personally love to read the paper daily, but since moving to the shore 8yrs ago - still read the Post. The Daily Times is absolutely worthless. The internet will never have the same feel as sitting down with the newspaper and a cup of Joe in the morning!!! As long as we are not talking about another taxpayer bailout I would love to see the industry survive.

  5. Great. Papers can openly campaign for Dermocrate candidates while we all pay.

  6. Simply ignore the reason for failure- uber liberal slant and the folks are fed up.

  7. 10:52, your theory is mighty convenient considering your obvious conservative slant. Maybe the demise of the papers is due to the advant of free internet news sources, multiple 24-hour cable news feeds, and overall decreases in demand that don't have anything to do with politics.

But I forget the idealogue's logic:
"I think it, therefore it must be"

  8. And does anyone think the papers won't be beholden to the dems for saving their butts?
Like they're not already lapdogs, this will ice the deal.
The shame of it is Cardin and Mikulski both sponsoring it.
Think about this-- PRMC is 'non-profit', too.
With rosewood paneling in the lobby, and every kind of expense imaginable to eat up all the 'profits'.
The worst of it is-- more intrusion of govt into the business sector.
Enough of the bailouts, already! Let them sink or swim on their own merits.

So us all an example of ANY major news paper that has a conservative slant!

    Truth hurts don't it.
Face it, the working productive people in this country aren't fooled by that leftest propaganda!
That is why lefties don't make it in radio too! Only the most "Challenged" people believe that marxist bullcrap!

  11. Cardin's support of the bill is just another reason to not re-elect him or Mikulski.

  12. 1145 Thats what they want you to think, theres no sense in arguing with you liberals because in most cases you lack simple logic and often refuse to think for yourself....wake up buddy, the government is NOT doing ANYTHING in the best interest of you.
