Racism
1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
There are a lot of misconstrued conceptions about what a racist is. The term is used today rather liberally to mean someone who doesn’t like another race or someone because of their race. That isn’t racism. It’s either hate or fear.
Based on this, one might question who indeed are the racists in this city. There is only one person in the public eye in this city who consistently pulls the race card and attempts cast racist aspersions on others. That person, of course, is Eugenie “Shanie” Shields, the Salisbury City Council representative from District One.
Winning to maintain her council seat by a single vote in the 2009 city elections (again with the help of the Tilghman machine), Shields has been the thorn in the side of many, and an embarrassment to not only the people of her own district, but of the whole city. Grunting, smacking and making sotto voce comments through one council meeting after another, rolling her eyes, and too often and too convincingly playing the comedic yet tragic illiterate fool, Shields has taken her chosen part as an anachronistic stereotype to a new level of performance art. And when she doesn't get what she wants or has been convinced by others that she wants, those who deny her become racists.
An alleged graduate of Salisbury's all-black high school, Shields has publicly declared that she wishes that schools were still segregated by color, that black children would be better taught by “their own” people. Although a self-described advocate for “her people”, Shields early on in her political career aligned herself with the likes of Barrie Tilghman and Gary Comegys, who, with the assistance of moneyed, LLC-protected friends, have their sights set not on the uplifting of the plight of the people of some District One neighborhoods, but the altogether elimination of those neighborhoods, followed by replacement with gentrified (i.e., owned by people with money) housing and small businesses. And, not coincidentally, it's being done with the taxpayer funds, funds that could be used to remove the blight but do it to protect and improve neighborhoods and the lots of those who occupy them.
Failing to have ever put forth an original idea of her own, Shields has ridden the “I'll take the crumbs” bus for her district from Day One. She has, and many say very lazily, preferred to take the scraps and leavings by voting with the crowd after being convinced by Tilghman and her puppets that there's a light at the end of the tunnel for District One, a light that will show itself soon. The Sassafras Meadows plan is a case in point. Shields' vote to approve was based on the promise of over two hundred units of affordable housing. When all was said and done, fewer than a third of that number were still on the drawing board, with the affordability itself in question, too, as an annual income of well over $40,000 was necessary to own one of them. Her recent vote to accept a strings-attached “gift” from a Baltimore property speculator on the North Prong is also a case in point. Shields was adamant in her double (and triple) negative-containing statements regarding how the acceptance of this property would “reduce blight” on the West Side and somehow promote a sea change in what she described as a barrier between east and west. When the mayoral veto was issued, she was quick to publicly call those who thought the transaction was ill-advised racists. It makes one wonder, given that Shields' literacy is somewhat questionable, if she knows what the word really means, or if she's just blindly using it (as many have) to rile the race-baiting contingent, of which she is certainly a member.
District One wants and deserves to be represented and represented well. Shanie Shields isn't doing the job. In fact, her laziness and casual attitude toward the business of the council is part of what is making the West Side what it is: a poverty-stricken, drug-infested and crime-ridden area, one whose lesser denizens threaten the economic and social health and well-being of the entire city. Her failure to even attempt to understand or want to understand the city's charter (hasn't read it), the budget (didn't read it, but voted for it, unread), the process of grant application and research (not a clue), the inner workings of any of the city departments, the failure to attend the meetings of boards to which she, as a part of her duties, is assigned (couldn't be bothered), and her overwhelming propensity to let others make the calls and do the work but then pull her dog-eared race card out (perhaps at the urging of certain other members of council, and certainly without complaint from them) when things didn't go her way have led District One down a path of destruction, both by internal and external influences. It will be years before District One once again has its opportunity to choose a representative with good leadership qualities, and, until then, that continued descent onto the path of destruction, partly led by a much lesser leader will continue to plague us all.

You have voiced my sentiments exactly.
ReplyDeleteShes an idiot with no I.Q. what they heck does anyone expect.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a well written, insightful commentary. Unfortunately for most blacks they remain unaware of how powerful politicians continue to exploit them. After all the "War on Poverty" declared by Roosevelt has been a boon for entitlement scams, Racism is a lucrative cottage industry for the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharptons and a powerful tool to use when anyone opposes the current POTUS.And have we even made the slightest dent in Poverty? The current plan will create more burdens by granting amnesty to all of the illegals. Obama admitted as much in his recent visit to Mexico. Change will start at the levels of Government like our city council, Shanie BARELY squeaked out a victory, I am still skeptical of the validity of her "win".Keep up the good fight, we must to save our country.
ReplyDeleteShanie Shields DID NOT graduate Salisbury High School. This can be verified by the Wicomico County Board of Education. Shields DID NOT graduate any high school. She could have a G.E.D. Also, her claim of having an Associate Degree from Wor-Wic Community College in "Office Technology", as reported by the Daily Times, is an absolute lie. Verify it.
ReplyDeleteAmen! You can tell by how she presents herself at the council meetings that she doesn't care how she looks or how she represents her district.
ReplyDelete12:07 Due to how she speaks I've questioned her education myself.
Its a shame that if just 2 more good citizens stepped up and voted, this city could be on the fast track to recovery. But now we have to deal with a huge spped bump in Shanie, until Bubba and Louweasal get dumped from the council.
ReplyDeleteOMG... here we go! More BULL S@#%!!
ReplyDeleteIt is my belief that people of color are as much a part of the race bias as the whites. Our government has created and allowed this to happen. The minorities know that all they have to do is cry foul and the system will protect them whether it is factual or not. This is why the hatred exist. Dislike and tension among all races has existed since the beginning of time. Look at what the immagrants of the early 1900's endured. You didn't see the Irish or Italians crying to the Feds. They worked hard and ignored it. People joked and called each other names like Mick, Spic and Dago and laughed it off. They were proud of their heritage and didn't take things so serious. In todays world the African American race is bombarded by their own race. Music laced with the six letter word and conversations filled with the same disrespectful language. But let someone else say that word and they want that person crusified. You have to have respect for for own race and yourself before you can expect it from others. So before you call someone a racist take a good look in the mirror.
ReplyDeleteShe is a pig! She is only there b/c of her race! no other reason!!!
ReplyDeleteWAKE UP PEOPLE!!!
12:45...
ReplyDeleteWell said!
12:46. There is absolutely no need for name calling.
ReplyDelete12:46 get real, she is there because she was voted in office, like it or not. If you live in District 1, get out and campaign for yourself or someone else to fill her seat.
ReplyDeleteShanie Shields campaigned for a City Council seat in two elections because she wanted a supplement to her income. Easy money...in fact, gravy. Civic duties....she doesn't have a clue.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! She protects the very slumlords that own the housing stock in her district, not her constituents. All the grunting and contortions in meetings are childish, but wehat shocks me is hearing that she "wishes" blacks and whites had separate schools. If a white councilwoman said that, she would be run out of town on a rail. What is wrong with people?
ReplyDelete12:45, think you might be extending this article just a bit too far. Irish and Italians were not put in chains and brought over here; most came on their free will. Irish and Italians were not banned from employmment, voting rights, and equal protection of the law anywhere near what African Americans experience up until just 40 years ago. While "people might have joked.." when saying racial slurs, black people were being raped, hung, and having their bodies mulilated when those "jokes" were being said.
ReplyDeleteAs far as blacks using the N-word, so what. You must WANT to call us that, if you always wonder "why can't we (white people) say it?"
While I don't believe racism should be an excuse for anyone not getting ahead, don't for a second try to equate treatment of African Americans in the US to any other group. Unfortunately for the country at large, the image of blacks as pimps, thugs, whores, and dummies has often negatively colored our self-image and presented us in a negative light to other groups here in the US.
The Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons out there often do cry foul too much. And too often these guys fail to see that the battle is no longer in the courtroom; its in the class room and the employment line. But that is exactly where most us are fighting today; too bad our stories are not sexy enough for you to see on tv.
1:04, Shanie is to be pitied more than censured. She continues to have that slave mentality....permissive, submissive, and subservient.
ReplyDeleteIt's "Share the Wealth Shanie"
ReplyDeletePeople like her put the Big O-man in the White House.
Please do a post on the person(s) who are now supporting Shanie by giving her a place to live and whatever else she gets for her vote.
ReplyDeleteSalisburians:
ReplyDeletePlease come to the City Council meeting mext week and tell Shields and the two other stooges (Bubba and Louweasel) what we think of them.
Shanie thinks this is still the Jim Crow South, and her remarks are just the "separate but equal" kind of crap that drags us down and makes us the laughingstock of the east coast and keeps us as the capital of the "Sh*thouse Side of Maryland".
ReplyDeleteNo support/negatives for Shanie but 12:46pm, you can't equate the history of African Americans in the US with any other group. The N-word was followed by a whip and a noose for blacks unlike "spic and Mick". Racism is no excuse for not exceeding in today's world but you can't whitewash history either.
ReplyDeleteShields is to be pitied more than censured. She continues to have that slave mentality...permissive, submissive and subservient.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the state run media and most blacks the term "RACIST" means White Men.
ReplyDeleteShields has sold her soul to the devil, and she "is being taken care of" for her "co-operation".
ReplyDeletePhronesis is a great writer!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the article.
Precisely using the definitions given here, Israel is the most racist country on the planet.
ReplyDeleteAnon1:25. Hebreux LeFleur, slum landlord, is one of them. Shields occupies his new house at below market rental rates.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the matter with Mrs. Shields? Why is she advocating segregated schools? "Inherently unequal"......The Supreme Court
ReplyDeleteNo one can not "white wash" the past. I will not let you or anyone else "Black wash" the future.
ReplyDeleteThe past is sad, but it is the past.
I see people I have never heard a cross word from starting to get pissed off. White America is angry.
Just ask the indians what happens when you piss off White America. Try to live as equals and get along. If not this country has some very rough roads ahead. If we are going to hold forefathers responsible for the past maybe some should look no further then thier own continent. Bought and sold on you own soil by your own people.
We are all slaves of Uncle Sam right now. Start pointing the finger in the right direction.
As one of (As Obama describes) typical white poeple, I saw racism first hand in the sixties. I didn't agree with it then, and I don't agree with it now.
ReplyDeleteI admire when a person of color exceeds and betters myself at various skills and tasks. But in everything in life there are variations in the skill levels of people in ALL races.
When a less skilled person of can't compete and happens to ba a person of color and then claims it is because of racism, IT MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL!!!
People of color, this is America where all things are possible, and opportunities are everywhere around. GET OFF THE RACISM CRAP!! the days of guilting dumb ole whitie are over!
She must be related to Queen Moon here in Easton!!!!!
ReplyDelete4:35 and 4:52, you are stating the same things that black parents stress to their kids. Good black parents teach their kids about history while stressing that history should not hold them back. Black people also get pissed when we see folks not taking advantage of opportunities available while playing the race card. But you cannot use the race baiting of a few to disqualify any legitimate complaints of racism that arise. You also cannot use the actions of a few minorities to paint the race as a group of lazy people looking to be taken care, which often is the conservative defense in certain situations.
ReplyDeleteAll you needed to do was just post Joe's pic for the answer.
ReplyDeleteAmazing post! The part about Shanie being a stereotype just hit me upside the head. You are so right. And that's what angers me.
ReplyDeleteI have many black friends -- and a couple of black relatives :-)! NONE of them are like this woman. They are smart, well-spoken, worked their butts off to get an education and a good life. They range from an auto mechanic to a dentist and everything in between.
I feel for the people in this woman's district.
Anon:4:15 How can you say Hebrew is a slum lord and in the next sentence say she is living in a new house??? I am a friend of Hebrew's and I can tell you that if you worked as hard as him, and started with nothing but an ambition may be you could be successful also. This man is an imigrant that is self made, no one gave him a thing, but an opportunity. Hebrew without the help of the city has turned around whole areas of the west side that were drug infested by rehabing houses. Maybe before you write you should talk to this man andf see what he has done.
ReplyDeleteLets just tell it like it is. She is as dumb as they come. In any other City she would be capable of being the dog catcher. The sad fact is that Salisbury is so desperate that she was elected to her district. Her constuants dont even care enough to come out in numbers to vote. Its like shooting fish in a barrel. Just look at her. Is that the image of an educated, motivated and upstanding leader. NO ! Sitting back and eating Bon Bons during a council meeting and spitting out the occasional one liner doesn't get it. She reaks of racism with her comments and gets away with it like Rachel Polk did. What a joke she and this City is.
ReplyDeleteThis post is right on the money. Shields keeps on playing from the Amos & Andy playbook, dragging her constituents down with her and making everybody in town look bad, especially the black residents.
ReplyDeleteShe's painted herself into a stereotype corner, and she'll never be able to get out of it, even if she had the smarts to do it.
A question to the black community: Is this the sort of person you want to be seen as? Because that's how people from outside see it.
ReplyDelete10;49
ReplyDeleteThe first part would be funny if it wasn't so true. Sort of like a like a Kingfiah character in a dress, all dumb bluff but no substance. Maybe people can start calling her Queenfish.
Really now. The West Side and the North Prong issues in Salisbury are about taking poor black property away and using it for development (profit).
ReplyDeleteShanie has been hoodwinked into thinking she is doing poor blacks a service by going along with the rich developers dream. Either hoodwinked or knowingly selling out the poor. Take your pick.
Shanie is bad for Salisbury. She is bad for poor blacks. She is bad for working class people in town.
Beyond that, she is truly a laughing stock. How sad. To be so stupid you don't even recognize you are being used, and then being made into a laughing stock.
Pathetic.
