O'Malley Calls Off Governor's Reception In Ocean City, Saves Taxpayers $12,000.00

Gov. Martin O'Malley has cancelled the traditional Governor's Reception at the annual Maryland Association of Counties meeting in Ocean City this week.

Calling off the reception, which was set for Friday, will save about $12,000.00

O'Malley has been scaling back on expenses for the annual event, citing the state's serious budget problems. His administration already has told department heads only to send necessary staff.

O'Malley is still scheduled to give a speech to the group on Saturday.

  2. Cancel the entire event and save much more. This is only a perk for the elected officials and should be done away with entirely.

  5. I agree with 6:19. Although there are vendors there that want to sell to the counties, the main thrust of the convention is nothing but elbow rubbing and schmoozing under the guise of information sharing. Sure, a few speakers and focus groups, but mostly its a few days at the beach, out of the office on the taxpayer's dime. I would guess that when all's said and done, the MD counties spend something like $10,000 apiece. With 24 counties, that's a quarter million dollars, plus lost work days for all who attend, days that they could actually be doing something.
I've been to one of these, about ten years ago. I refused to go again after seeing how much of a waste and opportunity for some to overindulge in alcohol (and away-from-home sex) and party away the taxpayers' money. There's nothing that goes on there in the way of information sharing or instruction that can't be accomplished with a conference call or emails.

  6. Go figure> that money would have helped Ocean City economy that looks to me like it could be down the tank this summer except for weekends. I wonder who in OC is losing that $12,000.00???

  7. 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm - Governor’s Cabinet Reception (invitation only)

5:00 pm - 8:00 pm - Crab Feast - Rain or Shine - Music by Klassix

It would appear that the Gov would have burned up $12,000 in free booze in only 1 hour. Kinda makes you wonder how much a 3 hour crab feast burns up considering crabs cost more than booze.

Not to worry as they can spill over to Castaways for bikini friday and afterwards to challenge the Domino Pizza shop crew next door to serve them "or else".

  8. Folks, sorry, but this is how govt works. These off-the-clock events are where the movers and the shakers do their deals. They talk business in privacy, sometimes over a stiff drink. People in power do deals on the golf course, too, did you know that? Wake up and smell the coffee, people, this is reality, and it will always be this way, for the whole world.

  13. The facts that Seacrets is "the place to be" is exactly the reason you'll never see me there. I'm proudly a non-member of the sheeple/lemming club.

  16. There's a statement that Erhlich's "Governor's Reception" at Seacrets was paid for by the Republic Party (see: http://omalleywatch.com/?p=814). O'Malley has been using taxpayer money it seems.

As for SeaBay Castaway vs Seacrets, it's across the street from the hotel selected for the Civil Servants.
