The Ocean City Police Department, in cooperation with the Ocean City Emergency Services, would like to remind citizens that we are in the middle of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. There is currently one named active hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean “Bill”.
Ocean City closely monitors any potential weather threat and works closely with the National Weather Service. While hurricane “Bill” is still out in the Southern Atlantic and is not currently projected to track toward Ocean City, however hurricanes are unpredictable and often change direction as they approach land. For this reason the OCPD and OC Emergency Services is reminding citizens to monitor local, regional and national news and weather to ensure they are given sufficient notice regarding any dangerous weather activity that could impact our region.
A hurricane WATCH is issued for an area that could experience the effects of a hurricane within 36 hours. A hurricane WARNING is issued for an area that will experience the effects of a hurricane within 24 hours. KEEP IN TOUCH. When you come to the beach keep your eyes and ears open! Ocean City is no different than any other large city during summer months.
Here's how we try to get your attention for emergencies such as hurricanes:
•Local radio and television
•Cable television audio override (Ocean City officials can override all cable channels with emergency messages).
•Commuter signs owned by local businesses
•Banner planes
•Computer messaging services including: Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, the OCPD Blog and the OCPD and OC Emergency Services web pages
•Town of Ocean City AM Radio station tune to AM 1670
•Preparedness – These types of events should remind us all that personal and family readiness are essential components to review for any man made or natural threat.
