GM Says Volt To Get 230 Miles Per Gallon In City

Would be first to break the triple-digit mileage barrier, if EPA tests concur

DETROIT
- General Motors Corp. said Tuesday its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car should get 230 miles per gallon of gasoline in city driving, more than four times the mileage of the current champion, the Toyota Prius.

GM came up with the figure in early tests using draft guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for calculating the mileage of extended range electric vehicles, said Tony Posawatz, GM's vehicle line director for the Volt.

  1. Although all the crap with GM and bail outs has really pissed me off, I must admit....this car is by far the BEST looking hybrid/fuel efficient car yet! I'm a huge Toyota fan, but the Prius looks like crap, but the Volt is a good looking vehicle! This car WILL sell if the price is right. It's good to see that GM is actually doing something right

  2. 9:24 - your comment "if the price is right" is the conundrum here. I bet, knowing they won't make as much money off gas as a regular car, they will up the price in order to continue to make a profit. This much I bet - it won't be cheap.

  3. This statement is deceiving. The figures quoted leave out the fact the some or most of those miles will come form the battery that was plugged into a charger. The owner of the car will not pay at the pump for those mile but will pay a higher electric bill at the end of the month.

Fact. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

  4. 10:25 , not really. The article on CNN's website goes into a little more detail. It claims that a 10 hour charge will cost about .40 cents. If true, that's not too bad.

  9. 10:25, very perceptive.

How long do you think it will be that there will be a milage tax for electric vehicles to offset the loss of fuel /road taxes?

  10. Hey ignorant Americans, these "cars" are 40k! Not exactly what the unemployed bricklayer (7$ an hour illegals took his job) will be trading his evil Ford Explorer for. BTW, these will NOT sell when gas is $2.75. Sooooo.... what will Obama motors makes sure goes up? Apathetic, ignorant Americans get what they deserve.
