After Long Wait, Franken Sworn In As Senator

WASHINGTON - Al Franken became a senator on Tuesday, completing the transformation from comedian to politician.

The Minnesota Democrat's swearing-in marked the end of an eight-month political and legal struggle and drew thunderous applause in the Senate chamber. His presence gives Democrats 60 votes, enough to thwart possible Republican filibusters.

Vice President Joe Biden administered Franken's oath, slapping the former Saturday Night Live performer on the back, then embracing him in a full hug. Former Vice President Walter Mondale, a Minnesota native, accompanied Franken. Franken was introduced by fellow Minnesotan and Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

  10. Let it be known all over the land that, as of today, the Democrats have complete and unobstructed control over the federal government.
They can no longer blame it on Bush. I got a letter last week from Senator Mikulski complaining about how she had "inherited a terrible mess". HA! How long has she been in the Senate?

  13. Take heart folks, the medical corporations and lobbyists are doing their very best to screw the American people out of cost effective national single payer health insurance- and you get to blame the Democrats when we don't get it. Who cares if your kids don't have health insurance? Who cares if people pay into private plans all of their lives only to be duped into Medicare when they get sick and/or old? Keep buying into the lies the GOP has been feeding you for decades on the subject. And keep telling yourselves that the GOP is the party of small goverment, low taxes, and individual liberty. It's worked so well for you.

  15. Odd that an ACORN disciple found a box of uncounted ballots in the car trunk. They(ballots)ought to have been discarded since polls were closed, but the disciple claimed they were "absentee" ballots. This count brought the narrow margin of 20 some (i think)in favor of the incumbent Senator and was responsible for the first recount which had a similar outcome...another recount & you know the rest.
    deja vu!
